I have been awake for only 15 minutes and I already feel like taking another nap!

I got up way too early today...I should have slept in.

Why do these pics remind me of a scene from Jeffrey?

My flight ended up leaving about 40 minutes late, and we got in 30 minutes late, so...  It was an interesting flight with one little "annoyance" kicking the back of my chair for the first 15 minutes of the flight.  Thankfully, a parental unit stepped in after I - and the person next to me - had turned around a couple of times and given him a couple of "looks".  ;)

Why is that black country dancer wearing lip gloss?
It's Vasoline.

Thanks for sharing all those great photos, DR JoseSPiano.  ***SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES*** home!

The heat index is well over 100 here - welcome home!!!

Hmm.. It's only around 88 degrees now, and it doesn't feel that hot outside.  -Although, I had been hearing the reports of the HEAT over the past couple of days.

Make it from canned pumpkin, Jane, so they see how Americans eat pumpkin pie.

I can make pumpkin roll from canned pumpkin, but not pie.  I should serve something I enjoy. ;D

I think there's a recipe on every can of Libby's pumpkin puree.  That's what my mother used.

I cannot stand pumpkin pie any more, now that she's gone.

The farewell party for Charlie was quite wonderful. It was great to see my old friend Jeff Stock, who composed the wonderful TRIUMPH OF LOVE, and several folk I had not seen in some time. Charlie's moving to Alabama on Wednesday and on Friday, en route, he and his traveling companions are having lunch with mutual friends from The Library of Congress, and I need to make a trip down there. I may see if I can get a hotel room Thursday night and book the tickets t DC for Thursday.

Great chocolate cake was served. I think it's a hard commodity to find in Manhattan.

Welcome back, DR Jose!

File this in the "How Hollywood Thinks" file...

500-000 Pounds?-Mr-Spielberg- Sorry-Ive-got-date-Beeb- says-new-Dr-Who-writer

A couple of quotes...

Quote
The new man in charge of Doctor Who turned down a £500,000 movie deal with Steven Spielberg so he could take the job.

Bafta-winning scriptwriter Steven Moffat has quit a two-picture deal with the director and Lord Of The Rings film-maker Peter Jackson to fulfil a 'childhood dream' of working on the BBC sci-fi drama.

Moffat, who created hit BBC comedy series Coupling, had signed a £1million contract to write the first two scripts for Tintin, a £150million Spielberg trilogy based on the comic-strip hero.

But instead the Scottish writer will take over as the creative force of Doctor Who after Welsh writer Russell T. Davies, who revived the series in 2005, decided to step down.

And, later...

Quote
One Hollywood insider said: 'No one walks away from Spielberg and all that money for a show no one has heard of. I mean, what is this doctor show about? It sounds a little silly.'

Now, let's see...

The Hollywood insider hasn't heard of Doctor Who, which has been around for almost forever in one form or another, and in it's current form is one of the biggest hits on the BBC, getting ratings of something like forty-six and a half percent of the audience, which here in America is something American Idol has trouble achieving.

How much does anyone want to bet the exact same Hollywood insider has never heard of Tintin, either, except as some project that Spielberg is interested in?  (And Tintin has been around longer than the Doctor!)

In fact, let's conduct a little poll.  Some honesty here, please:

Who out there has heard of Doctor Who, prior to reading this post?

Who out there has heard of Tintin, same criterea?

And who do you love more, Snowy or K9?

Obviously, I've heard of Doctor Who.  Big fan.

And I've heard of Tintin.  Hooray for Captain Haddock!

As for the dogs, I kind of lean to K9.  Snowy may save Tintin's butt from time to time, but K9 has saved the universe!

There will be fish on the plate tonight.  Flounder, to be pankoed and fried.  Zucchini and crookneck squash, dittoish.  And something pasta-ish that won't be fried.  Just for a change of pace.

To be followed by a new episode of Iron Chef America.

Is that because her's was your favorite, or that you miss having pumpkin pie with your mother?

Keith said pecan pie is very American.  I have a good recipe from a friend for that.

Hers was my favorite.  Every time I've tried it since, it hasn't tasted right.  It's like she got the custard better, tighter or something.

We had a wonderful day in New Jersey. It was a long one. We didn't get back to Manhattan until 11pm. We went out early to spend time with Mike and Jennie (Anthony's cousins) while no one else was there (we're special). We got a tour of the new house and got a special pre-meal of grilled salmon, cous cous and pea pods. Yummm! It was very, very, very hot (at least for me) but I still spent a good portion of it outdoors. I just ran into the blissfully air-conditioned coolness of the kitchen whenever I could find a reason. We had a bbq with the traditional stuff, hot dogs, burgers, grilled veggies, potato chips, potato salad, and more (way too much food). There was a large contingent of Morelli cousins including the Chicago cousin who was in visiting. She's the one Anthony will visit on his trip to Wisconsin. They got to discuss their plans and are very excited to be able to spend time together in the Windy City (Friday night and all of Saturday). We took NJ Transit to M & J's but we were driven back into the city by other cousins who live in Manhattan as well. They have a child and had come out to NJ later so we didn't ride with them (besides we couldn't have had our special time if we had come with them). We go a little discombobulated on the New Jersey Turnpike/Garden State Parkway but eventually found our way to Manhattan. We were dropped on 46th Street and 10th Avenue. We walked to the 8th Avenue subway and caught a train home. All in all it was a loverly day.

Miss Vixmom, I'm jealous of your pool! I would love to have access to a pool on days like this.

Well, it's back to work tomorrow. I will be indexing and preparing for a presentation to be given a week from Tuesday. It's something I've done before so it's just a matter of revisions and reviewing so I'm familiar with the material.

That's the news from here.

My mother on her good days made the absolutely best pumpkin and pecan pies. On her lousy days, which were more common the crazier she got, everything she cooked was found in Dishes For Your Disposal. No one has yet equaled her way with pastry, but that doesn't stop me from looking around.

DR elmore, did you get your mother's recipes?  Any clue where the delicious chocolate cake was from.

One of the best chocolate cakes I ever had was in England at a little converted monastery, or something like that.  I asked for the recipe and found it was a frozen cake they had delivered. :o

Did I just read that BK and MBarnum liked the same movie?

Me, cook with my mother?  You've got to be kidding.  Guys weren't supposed to cook - that would turn them homo!  (Well, that was never said, but the implication was there.)  I didn't start cooking until der B and I were together for quite some time.

Come to think of it, my sister never learned to cook from our mother, either.  I don't remember even once having a dinner that my sister prepared.  She was too busy becoming whatever was not the housewife.

So our mother's cooking secrets have been lost.  That's what happens sometimes.
