Back from a two-mile jog.  The news is, of course, having a field day reporting absolutely nothing they couldn't say in five minutes.  They'll keep this going all day and into the evening - I'm sure they're already calling it EARTHQUAKE: 2008!  accompanied by dramatic music.

Yes, our newscasts do similar...one snowflake falls and all tv is interrupted with "Storm Watch" news reporting for the next 3 days.

I watched the first episode of the second season of MAD MEN last night on Comcast HD On Demand.....everyone still looking good and many promising plot lines established.

I checked my Time-Warner HD on Demand (free) channel, and MAD MEN 201 was already there (which debuted on Sunday night), so I'll be taking a pass on the Sunday night SD version of the show from now on and watching only the HD version On Demand. For a change, my cable company is doing something right!

CD or DVD - we're not sure what we'll do, but we're going to try and do something by the end of October here in LA.

I would certainly be interested in a DVD; a CD, not so much.

I began my afternoon completing THE CLOSER episode from Season 2 that I began last night. The actor who played Malik's father (the doctor) was very talented.

Then, I immediately began my review DVD for the day - Criterion's release of Guy Maddin's BRAND UPON THE BRAIN.

It's an experimental cinema surrealist piece, done as a silent movie with music, narration, and sound effects track. The Criterion disc offers the choice of 7 different narrators (Isabella Rossellini has two tracks - one of them recorded live in NYC before a theater audience watching the movie and reacting to it).

Like all such experiments (BLAIR WITCH, SKY CAPTAIN), it's interesting for about half its length and then unless you're completely engaged (which I wasn't with BLAIR WITCH but was with SKY CAPTAIN), loses its curiosity value and becomes a chore. I was ready for it to be over about 20 minutes before it was.

The disc also offers a variety of extras. There are two more experimental short films of the director done in the same silent with effects/music track style as the main feature. One a look at a famous Canadian castrato singer and the other a look at the Foley company who did the effects.

I'm in the middle of an interview/documentary with the director in which he describes how the film came to be made. (In Seattle with all local actors). It's a 50-minute documentary, so I still have a ways to go with it.

I stood at the intersection of 42nd Street and 5th Avenue for over 15 minutes waiting for a 104 bus, which should be arriving ever 7 minutes or so, according to the posted schedule. The 42 bus also runs part of the same 42nd Street route, and while I waited three damned 42 buses stopped. I don't know what the hell is the MTA's problem these days beyond gouging more money out of its passengers for really pathetic service.

I bussed up to 108th Street and dropped off the score, came back down, and now I have a bit of work to do on my BABES notes. I'm so glad this is my last jaunt to the main library branch.

DR Jennifer:

Potential BB10 SPOILERS

dkfjfjkdkkj ;jj;kjkj kjf;kljak;lkaekfj; lkjflkajflkj afkj klajfkljflk;jaf;k fadf I am not as fond of hamsterwatch.com as I was of the other guy's more detailed updates, but at least I feel like I'm getting a "sense" of what has been happening in the house.  Am I understanding correctly that the house is thinking about flipping the vote to oust Jessie now, instead of Keesha's main target, Angie?  I know Keesha would be upset, but it seems to me that maybe it would be best for Keesha.  She can always make a pact with Angie, but I don't think Jessie would consider it.

Where do you find your most valuable information?  Is it at televisionwitoutpity? dkfjjkkjl; kjljkd;lkj ;lkj adj;lkjfdsakj a;dslfkj ;lkja ds;flkj;lkjaf;lkajsdf;lakj f;lkjasd;lfkj oiwuoaisjf;alkj;lksj.

Yeah john powell is not writing about big brother this year. I emailed him and he confirmed this.

If you miss anything at hamsterwatch click on the daily index button at the top to see yesterday and what not.

The only 2 sites i read are hamsterwatch and televisionwithoupity's spoiler live feed thread.

I keep this bookmarked and then just click to where i left off the day before. They give more detailed accounts of things usually.

Has anyone tried rhubarb cake?

I've tried strawberry rhubarb type cakes. Not sure if they were pies or cakes. But they are always good. I love this combo!

Today at work, someone sent an e-mail with a link to THIS article about the book "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," with the subject: A parting gift to all of us from Mary Ann Shaffer.

???  Parting gift??  Mary Ann was one of the three assistant directors here at the Service Center when I first started working here in 1984(!) and she and I became friends.  The article mentions that she died earlier this year.  WHAT??  I don't remember getting an e-mail about her dying!  And certainly enough people still remembered/knew/kept in contact with her that SOMEONE would've sent an e-mail!

Well, it turns out that the author is a DIFFERENT Mary Ann Shaffer, who is ALSO a retired librarian!  WHEW!  And what a coinkydink!  Anyway, the book has some very good comments from Amazon readers.  Several people throughout the library district have sent follow-up e-mails saying that it is a good book and isn't it funny that there is another "Mary Ann Shaffer" who is (now, was) a retired librarian.

So, has anyone heard of/read this?

And here's an observation or two today's auditions....

The word, "Seine", is pronounced "sehn", not like the word "sign.  It has to rhyme with the word "men".

-I'm still laughing about that one on the inside five hours later.  ;)

If you're about to sing your song... In your tempo... Why do have to ask me for a "Tempo Check"?  How would I know your tempo ahead of time?

And...

When I ask you what you normally like to hear for your intro, your response should not be, "Umm... Whatever you'd like play."

And then if I ask you - as a means of clarifying you answer - "Would you like me to play what's on the page?", the answer to that question should most definitely not be, "Well... Just whatever gives me my starting pitch."

This seems like a perfect euphemistic image...to see Elmo running up to 108th Street, planting kisses on everyone in his path!

~~~~~SAFE AND SOUND VIBES TO THOSE OUT IN CALIFORNIA WHO MAY HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE~~~~~
*Which just happens to include the family of the lead casting director.  We ended up taking a short break so that he could touch base with them.  And while the other casting director was on the phone with his office, his assistant said, "OH!  We're moving.  It's an earthquake.  Bye!"  -And that's how we heard about the earthquake today.
