I"m actually conflicted about this too. I mean Phelps is fantasticly good. But a couple of those other guys could definitely beat him.
I am curious though what the reaction would be in the US. I sort of feel like most people would be disappointed if one of the others won.
I'm still waiting for our first medal period! (i am confident for rowing, diving, maybe 1500m swimming or cycling!
The U.S. media is WAY too overboard in emphasizing his potential of winning 8 golds. If he doesn't, there will be a huge letdown, I'm sure of it, and it won't be his fault. It's happened before as the media tries to pump up interest by proclaimin "potential". In many cases, it's just not there and the athletes suffer from the attention that is suddenly thrust upon them.
There was a female swimmer in Atlanta named Summer Sanders. She was good and had a chance at medals on relays. The press presented her as the next BIG THING...and that probably weighed heavily on some of her lackluster swims.
Beth Heiden, sister of Eric who won five speed skating Golds many years ago, was on the women's team. The press pounced on her as a good bet to be the female version of Eric. She never was. She was pretty vocal about it in interviews at the Olympics, too.
