Back from seeing THE FALL. I liked it very, very much. The little girl who stars in the film was an absolute delight! The costumes were perfect for the 19-teens era and beautiful for the fantasy sequences.

My only quibbles were the two lead actresses. They didn't impress me much, but then their roles were fairly small so it really didn't matter much.

Loved the characters in the fantasy sequences and the monkey.

I even cried a little bit during the film.

TOD:

Around the 3rd grade I wanted to be a costume designer, but only if I could design clothes in the style of the 1940s and 1950s.

By the 4th grade I wanted to be a film maker and that is the career dream I had for many, many years. Throughout 7th and 8th grade I made about a dozen or so 8mm movies using a combination of live action and clay model animation, with titles like VOGORAN, MONSTER FROM BELOW...LADY AND THE ROBOT...and DAY OF THE DINOSAURS.

Even made up posters and other press material for each movie! LOL! Someday I will scan those for all to see.

We're watching the Olympics on our new 32" Sony Bravia TV. Our old TV, which we think we'd had for about 18 years, had to be tuned through the VCR to receive a signal and we were having to smack it on the side to restore the sound quite often. Richard went to Target for the new set yesterday and Rob came home last night to help him set it up.

We love the digital experience and the bigger screen.

Watching the finish of the women's marathon. What a thrill!

Topic of the Day: I remember when I was very young, I wanted to be an actor, but when I actually started doing community theater, I don't think that that had anything to do with it. I was in the choir at Western Washington University and we did "Carmen." The stage director was kind of a tyrant, but I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Other than that, the one thing that at one time I wanted to be was a watch repair person. I love pocket watches (still do...I have a few packed away in boxes) and wanted to learn how to take them apart and be able to put them back together. I never learned how, although I did take a few things apart when I was younger...not watches, though. However, most of those things were not able to be put back together.

I suspect so, since the minute Warners issued their release about moving HARRY POTTER, Disney issued a release moving up their animated feature into the POTTER slot (it was slated to premiere the week after POTTER).

I can tell you that it's the reason that I don't tire one bit of sitting in front of it day after day reviewing discs. I get a thrill (honestly!) every time I watch something that's really been authored well both on regular DVD and on Blu-ray, HD-DVD, and HD on TV. The larger screen and HDTV clarity is worth EVERY CENT.

I began my evening watching the second disc in WOODROW WILSON. I also watched all of the bonus features on the disc. The WILSON set featured an "enhanced mode" which offered branching mini-documentaries from the major feature. These little featurettes offered just a bit of extra information on people or events that were mentioned in the context of the main feature. Most of them only ran one to two minutes.

Next I watched the first disc in the FDR set. Like the Theodore Roosevelt set, there are no bonus features, but the main documentary is divided into four parts each an hour long. I watched the first two parts which were on disc one. This got FDR elected President and covered all of his early life, much of which I was ignorant of.

I'm assuming this series called THE PRESIDENTS hasn't aired yet, or maybe it did earlier this year. At any rate, the DVD set is expensive, but when the shows air on PBS, they are definitely worth watching.

Secondly, no scuppernog wine was consumed today, however, I did have some scuppernog wine a few months ago. Steve's father makes his own. It's quite an interesting beverage... in both a good and bad way.

However, I did sample some muscadine cider, as well as some peach cider - which I had never tried before. Quite tasty and refreshing.

I ended my evening watching last night's MONK. The identity of the murderer was very obvious, but the method was everything, and that made it a good mystery. As usual, some Monkl gags were pushed well past their toleration limit, but there were a couple of funny bits.

And Casper Van Dien is so yummy to look at that Shalhoub's shenanigans kind of faded into the background. William Atherton was the other principal guest star.

Does the FDR set cover his courting of Eleanor? And Mama Roosevelt's "reluctance" to the marriage?

I just remember when we were in pre-production for Eleanor: An American Love Story, all the background information on both families was quite fascinating, especially in regards to the whole New York Society system just after the turn of the century.

And as for the "delay" of the next Harry Potter movie...

I do find it a little strange in light of the trailer being released just a few weeks ago. However, I've also heard that the delay was also to shorten the time period between the next one and the one following that. -Especially since Daniel Radcliffe's current stage work is preventing him from filming the following sequel. -"Successive sequel" - I guess that's redundant.

As for today's Virginia winery tour...

We started off at Carter Mountain Orchard. The orchard is basically at the top of the mountain, so the views of the land below were practically 360 degrees. Stunning! -And the weather today helped with the spectacular views too.

They just started a vineyard there, and they had a small wine shop featuring the handful of wines they are now producing. Alas, you could tell that their wines and the winery was still quite "young". However, the peaches and apples were ripe, juicy and truly delicious.

Then it was off to Jefferson Vineyards.

They had a very nice tasting room, and a very nice tasting "experience".

I bought three bottles of wine.

*And I really do hope that when all is said and done, when they recounts Michael Phelps' Gold Medal Record, that "they" remember that at least two of them were in team relay events. He was not alone in that pool for two of those Golds during this Olympics. Go TEAM!!!!

...Then we finished our day at First Colony Winery. Another very nice wine tasting experience, and the wines, themselves were pretty good. The only quibble I had with them were their labels - the art work just looks cheap to me.

*But I did buy a bottle of their just-released "2006 Late Harvest" dessert wine. -It's their "Ice Wine" equivalent. I think I shall be enjoying this to close out my birthday in a couple of days.
