If Gore had been president I don't believe we would have gone to war with Iraq, since the rest of the world was so against the idea. And my nephew wouldn't have been hit in the face with a rocket-propelled granade. He's doing fine now. Here's a little clip of him at culinary school in Texas.

http://www.dallasnews.com/video/index.html?nvid=266885

He had made the brilliant decision of joining the Marines just months before Bush declared war. It's too bad he didn't opt for culinary school back then. So, where exactly WERE all those WMDs?

Amy

Your nephew looks well...  I wish him all the best!

I would also like to know where the wmds were....

The problem with recounts is that they almost never result in a change of the results.  And, when they do, it is in the small elections, for a city council seat.  Yes, such a change did happen in Long Beach back when der B and I lived there, but this was a case where the difference between the two candidates was less than twenty votes.  That was quite unusual, and not something that happens on the national scale.

What many people don't realize (or remember) is how divisive Gore appeared to be to approximately half the nation, by trying to "steal" the election because of the "hanging chads."  Just as half of the nation was against Bush winning the election, on what appeared to be electoral fraud, the other half of the nation was equally against Gore for the exact same reasons.

Hopefully, we won't have a repeat of that come November, and one or the other candidate will have a decisive victory (or, at least, the candidate that does not win will be gracious enough to lend his full support to the winner).

As it happens, I like both Obama and McCain, and will be pleased to see either one of them in the White House.  That's something I haven't been able to say for quite some time.  Generally, I haven't liked any of the candidates for President in the elections of the past two decades, and have been stuck for far too long with voting for the lesser of two evils.  For me, this is the best election season that we've had in a long time.

Another thought that comes to mind if Gore was in office

I wonder if the Congress would have remained republican or become democrat under his lead?

I would not have been surprised if certain elements of the conservative front continued to take potshots at Gore and the Clintons like they did during Clinton's terms.

And one more friendly reminder for anyone who'd like to join me...

2:00pm - Shake Shack (Madison Square Park) - Blueberry Crumble Frozen Custard Day!
...

At that time, I'll be in a teleclass about organizational development and grant-readiness.  All in all, I'd rather be in Madison Square Park.

IMHO, I think WMD was a guise of Bush to sell the war to the American people. There was never any evidence of it. His guile at what others were saying has led to the decline of the US and sense of respect we once had.
I disagree.  The intelligence reports that we were getting pointed to the existance of the WMD, and our government, led by Bush, truly believed the intelligence reports.

As I understand it, the information was faulty.  Those who were supposed to be creating the WMD, the scientists and military men of Iraq, were telling their own bureaucracies that they had them in order to cover their own asses, and the bureaucrats in Iraq believed the stories because it made them look good to Saddam Hussein.  Our intelligence was based on these false reports.  By the time we discovered the truth, we'd already invaded and Hussein was deposed.

In other words, it wasn't that Bush and company were corrupt, it's that they weren't anywhere near as smart as they thought themselves to be.

The moral of which is, be careful the lies you tell, because people tend to believe them.

The TOD and DR SWW's post above sent me back to the news analysis done post-2000 election by the major media outlets.

They studied and ran the Florida ballots by various scenarios.  Even if the US Supreme Court had allowed the full statewide recount to run to its conclusion, Bush still would have won - albeit by a very slim majority.

Changing the counting standards [hanging chad, dimples, over & under votes, etc.] would have resulted in various scenarios, some favoring Bush and some Gore, again by a very very small majority [200 to 300 votes].

What did the Democrats in was the butterfly ballot in Palm Beach County.  Which was designed by a Democrat and approved by the Democratic Committee there.  Thousands of votes for Gore were thrown out because another candidate had also been selected, due to the flawed design.  Because of what happened nationally, this made the decisive difference and determined the outcome of the election.

This bypasses the theoretical discussion of how many minority voters were disenfanchised by the local GOP hacks "scrubbing" the voting rolls, as well as the whole absentee ballot brouhahah.

DR Matt may not find anything interesting in tonight's television schedule, but for me, there's EUReKA on the SciFi channel.  The aftermath of last week's episode should be very interesting, indeed!

It is also a historic election.... It is the first election in decades that does not have a standing VP running for president

I don't remember it that way.  I remember the way it unfolded.  What I know is that Gore won the popular vote nationwide.    I also know that Florida refused to acknowledge any possibility that something illegal had occurred.

I'm not judging.  But Gore certainly had my support for contesting the outcome in Florida where the polls all indicated a commanding lead in the Palm Beach area.  When your brother is governor of the state, it certainly looks more suspicious that something hinky was going on.  I'm convinced it was.

It's the GOP spin, of course, that paints Gore as having also tried to steal the election -- the one that he WON in popular votes, that is.
