The Blu-Ray was very sharp - but MUCH sharper than the standard DVD? I suppose, but not as much as I would have thought. The color, however, while okay, is not what it should be - it's obvious from the first shot of the film, where the sky should be much bluer. I now know that Warners didn't bother to reference an IB Tech reel - they just can't be bothered - the same thing happened with The Searchers, and everyone, of course, thought that was the transfer to end all transfers - very sharp, yes, with color that was so yellow/brown that the gorgeous blue Technicolor skies were rendered a sickly green. Who cares how sharp something is if the color is off? People will not put up with incorrect aspect ratios, soft transfers, bad sound, but they sure will put up with off color. I suspect a lot of that is because so few people actually saw these films as they were originally released, so when something is tons sharper than any previous home vid version, that becomes the be-all and end-all. Again, the West transfer is sharp and the color is decent, but had they used one of their own IB Tech reels to time this DVD your mouth would be on the floor. Again, just look at the Search For Paradise clips in Dave's documentary - THERE are Tech skies.
