Good Evening!

Greetings from MoMa!  I decided to take "advantage" of the Last Chance Members Only Viewing of the Dali exhibit tonight. The doors opened at 6:30, and, boy am I glad I had my Membership Card with me: there were/are a lot of people who did not, and with only two docents at the Members Desk, well... ;)

I'm at work ordering some non-fiction books and the one I just ordered was this:  Doctor Who-Eclectic Gypsy: An Unauthorised Biography, by Dave Thompson.  Here's the cover:

I'll be requesting this. :D

Hmmm... Well, I've already sat through "Destino" twice, and taken a close up look at some of the paintings I sort of skimmed over during my past visits... And since the galleries are quite crowded now, well... I think just one more semi-quick walk-thru, and then home.

Well, after some creative Google-ing...

Well, this will be my first time posting here, so I guess I officially become a lurker now - an upgrade(?) from just a reader. ;-)

<SNIP>

WOW!  The more things change, the more things stay the same. ;)

It wasn't my first post, but on the very same day that Jose wrote the above, I wrote this:

Quote
My name is George. I live in Olympia, Washington. I originally went to college to study music education (high school choir), but dropped ed. and just graduated. I now work for a library (at their administrative offices), listen to my CDs all day, host a radio show on a local community station (WEEKEND ON BROADWAY on KAOS Olympia, 89.3 FM, www.kaosradio.org ) and do community theatre when I can. I am now in rehearsals for an AIDS benefit revue called BABES WITH BIG HAIR, our one performance is on September 14th!

I've loved musicals since I was in middle school but I didn't start performing until my junior year of college. I was in the chorus of CARMEN (yes, the opera, and in English), then two years later (still in college), BRIGADOON. I've loved performing ever since.

The only time I've been to New York was in December of 1995. I went with a tour group. The very first show we saw, literally right after we got off the bus from the airport, was SWINGIN' ON A STAR. It was wonderful. I also got to see Betty Buckley in SUNSET BOULEVARD, Julie Andrews in VICTOR/VICTORIA and Avery Brooks in ROBESON and, for about four freeze-frame frames, my forehead was on the Regis and Kathy Lee show! I hope to someday go back.

And here is my very first post on HHW...July 9, 2002:

Quote
Hello All,

I know it's late in the evening (do I get a prize for being the last post of the evening?), but this is my very first posting on this website: I am a chronic lurker and parenthetical user (I'm getting professional help). I would like to put in my two cents about the male and female non-theatrical singers...for no other reason than just because. I have been in love with the five singers of The Manhattan Transfer. Tim Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel (my favorite of the bunch), Laurel Masse (original member, left the group in 1979) and Cheryl Bentyne (in the group since 1979). Individually they each have a wonderful sense of musicianship and style, but put them together and watch out! Incredible singing. That's my two cents.

The CDs that I've been listening to lately: Elaine Stritch At Liberty (love it - listened to it twice in one day) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (like it - twice in one week).

Well, until the next time.

PS. I would like to personally thank Mr. Kimmel (and/or Mr. Bakalor) for knowing how to correctly spell "a lot," (or for at least knowing how to use a spellchecker). A website with which Mr. Kimmel is no longer affiliated, no longer spells it correctly and even the incorrect spellings aren't consistent. I've seen "allot" and "alot" a lot.

....There's an interesting Dan Savage commnet about her and her daughter in his column in today's VILLAGE VOICE.

"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" did a segment while they were at the RNC about the "choice" that the Palins are able to make.  The Daily Show senior correspondents talked to republicans and pretended to not know/remember a word and tried to get the republicans to say the word "choice"...as in Sarah Palin and her daughter had the "choice" to keep the baby.  It was hysterical, because almost NONE of them would say that particular word. ;D

Back from a very interesting few hours over at my pal Dave Strohmaier's house, watching the Blu-Ray of How The West Was Won, so I could better discuss it here and elsewhere.  It was fascinating.  He has an incredible video projector and a very big screen so I was seeing Blu-Ray for the first time and under pretty optimal conditions.  Many stories were told and it was great seeing him again.

I have a question for the tv watchers:

When does "The Office" start up with new episodes?

The Blu-Ray was very sharp - but MUCH sharper than the standard DVD?  I suppose, but not as much as I would have thought.  The color, however, while okay, is not what it should be - it's obvious from the first shot of the film, where the sky should be much bluer.  I now know that Warners didn't bother to reference an IB Tech reel - they just can't be bothered - the same thing happened with The Searchers, and everyone, of course, thought that was the transfer to end all transfers - very sharp, yes, with color that was so yellow/brown that the gorgeous blue Technicolor skies were rendered a sickly green.  Who cares how sharp something is if the color is off?  People will not put up with incorrect aspect ratios, soft transfers, bad sound, but they sure will put up with off color.  I suspect a lot of that is because so few people actually saw these films as they were originally released, so when something is tons sharper than any previous home vid version, that becomes the be-all and end-all.  Again, the West transfer is sharp and the color is decent, but had they used one of their own IB Tech reels to time this DVD your mouth would be on the floor.  Again, just look at the Search For Paradise clips in Dave's documentary - THERE are Tech skies.
