I must admit I am not overly excited about either of the #1 men on the tickets but I am scared silly about the Republican choice for #2 behind a man of advanced years

George C. Scott was one of my favorite actors.

Did he ever give anything less that a great performance?

I was lucky enough to see him do a play on Broadway once.

I think it was called THE BOYS OF SUMMER.  It was a 2-person play that dealt with Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn as grown-ups.  John Cullum was his co-star.

It wasn't the greatest play ever written.  It had originally been done in San Francisco with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.

But watching Scott do his thing in person was a fantastic theatrical experience.

It's cool and rainy (and humid because of the rain) today.

I'm trying to decide if I should go out to Staten Island this evening to see a concert production of On the Town directed by a friend or if I should go back to midtown and get a half-price ticket for All My Sons.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And it looks like I have a bunch of Young Fiona's to play for today...  -And, no, the "postponed" revival of Brigadoon is not back on.  ;)

Well... After the reports I've heard, I'd say go see and hear On the Rown.  Although, after the reports I've heard, I'd say go see All My Sons.  ;)

Hi Larry!  How are your eyes doing?

I see an optometrist for an eye exam and a new glasses prescription on Tuesday.

DRvixmom, I agree about the Republican VP nominee: clueless and if she has any class, it's with a capital K. Much as I am aware and content with my white trash background, I don't think the presidential ring should lower itself to a white trash clan that can only be an embarassment to the US abroad. Can you imagine her and her clan mingling at Monte Carlo? It's a rerun of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.

DR vixmom and George et al - As for the "Rent" screenings... The lines here in NYC were loooooong(!) on Wednesday and Thursday nights.  -And I have friends who are already planning on lining up at least two hours before the showing tomorrow, so... -It may not be that popular in your neck of the woods, but ya' never know.

As for Joe Orton... When I was in college, I remember studying the various edits - especially for the ending - for What The Butler Saw.  Thankfully ;), our school's theatre department ended up using the "unexpurgated" ending - which was more of a visual one than anything else.  Or something like that.

I'm sticking with Obama; I thought John McCain came off last night as belligerent, mean, hostile and such an ugly troll that a bridge ought to be built over him.  I also found his insistence on not making eye contact with Obama a sign of complete contempt for his opponent.

I thought Obama came off as a stick, and I wonder if it's not an attitude he's developed to separate himself from his background in the lower middle-class? I didn't get this in his convention attitudes at all.

OK - I meant to leave here about 30 minutes ago, so...  -I'm not running late, I just wanted to have a leisurely breakfast in midtown before I started today.  However, I can still have a somewhat leisurely breakfast if I leave now, so...

Newman's Own Foundation has issued a statement. The statement, from Vice-Chairman Robert Forrester, follows:
"Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.
"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.
"An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million.
"While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.
"In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."
"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.
"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."
