One of the best concerts I've seen been to was Bare Naked Ladies.

The best concert that I DID NOT see was Donny Osmond when I was about 13. My mother wouldn't let me go because she said "they" did drugs at concerts at the Coliseum. I am still bitter.

However, Mom did let me go with the Girls Scouts to see Three Dog Night at the Coliseum, where "they" were smoking marijuana.

I finshed THE BOYS IN THE BAND. Always a moving scene when Emory makes his confession, places the call and the aftermath.

The Girl Scouts?

Yes. We decided to disband our troop before we entered high school, so we spent our entire treasury that summer. We went to Big Surf, the Windmill Dinner Theater, and the Three Dog Night concert.

I listened to a good chunk of the William Friedkin commentary. Usually I hate his commentaries since he likes to describe what we're looking at. This seems to have been pieced together from comments made elsewhere, and it's actually much better than I expected.

[Matt H.]

There were three documentaries on the disc: 14 minutes about the writing and production of the play, 24 minutes on the production of the film, and 5 1/2 minutes paying tribute to the taboos it broke and its influence on folks like Tony Kushner. Peter White and Larry Luckinbill, the two surviving members of the original cast, also take part in all the featurettes.

CHUCK was enjoyable but fairly predictable. The new effeciency expert should be a fun recurring character if he hangs around for awhile.

I enjoyed HEROES again tonight though this seesaw bit they're doing with Sylar is kind of irritating.

Next week's show promises to be very informative.

...And speaking of marijuana...  I believe someone was partaking of a "J" in the bus's lavatory.  However, I guess that's a "better" smell than what usually comes out of the lavatory.

And as for the Topic of the Day...

Two of the most fun concerts I've been to were at the Circa '21 Dinner Theatre in Rock Island, IL.  I worked there for about three months, and they would host guest artists on the dark nights.  While I was there, "1964" and "The Lettermen" came through.  The whole "1964" experience was truly an experience. Not only was the recreation quite uncanny, but even the audience was quite into the whole deal.  Lots of women - of all ages - screaming and cheering, and everyone was just having a good ole time.  "The Lettermen" were also fun - of course, I think only one of them was an original Lettermen - and I believe some of the vocals were tracked, but still...  Even though there was some inherent cheesiness in their arrangements and presentation, they put on a great show.  Their final encore: "MacArthur Park"!

Other concerts...

"Tuck & Patti" at Wolf Trap.  They were the opening act for Spyro Gyra, however, they played for over an hour.  -And once Spyro Gyra started playing, my friends and I left... as did a bunch of other people.  I think that was right when Randy Brecker was being actively promoted as the leader and featured artist.  We stayed for the first two songs, but it was quite evident that all the 'improv' was a bit too planned and choreographed - albeit, well lit.

"Rare Silk" and Freddie Hubbard with Michel Petrucciani - My friends and I originally just planned to stay to see and hear Rare Silk, but we ended up staying through Freddie Hubbard's set too.  And we were glad we did!  To close out the show, Freddie Hubbard brought Rare Silk back out on stage for a performance of "Red Clay".  Rare Silk did the opening, then Freddie and his band "traded fours" - well more like 16's or 32's - for about 15 minutes before bringing Rare Silk back in to close it out.  A single, 25-minute encore!

"Bryn Terfel" earlier this year at Carnegie Hall.  The Love and Joy of Music personified.

And as for Ms. Warwick...  -And I think I mentioned this the last time we discussed concerts...

She was playing Wolf Trap.  Jenny Jones - when she was still a comedienne - was her opening act.  It became evident that Miss Jones was only supposed to do a half hour set before Dionne Warwick took the stage, however, Miss Jones kept going and going for another 15-20 minutes.  Then came a "pause".  A long "pause".  Then Dionne Warwick took the stage... In a sweatshirt, work out pants and sneakers.  -Her traveling clothes.

Apparently, the hold up was due to her luggage getting lost.  However, she did have her shoes - which she had her assistant bring out on stage to show the audience.  They were nice shoes.  Well, she started her set.  An hour later, she was done.  An hour!?!?!?!?

Some people thought she was breaking for an intermission, but since she had just sang "That's What Friends Are For" - and the string players were packing up - we could tell that she was not coming back on the stage.

One really weird feature of this concert was a series of three duets she sang.  With a tape.  -Well, her duet partner was on tape - as were the backing tracks.  Soooo not cool.  Even if her dress had arrived, you could tell that most of the audience felt a bit cheated.

*Oh, and I was sitting on the Lawn that night.  And it drizzled the whole time too.

Of course, if I lived in NYC, the recent Wing concert would have been among my favorites.

Hmm... Some interesting late night talk show guest-ing tonight: Bill O'Reilly on "Letterman", and Michelle Obama on "Leno".  -And the now postponed/discontinued World Series Game on Fox.

Greetings from Oconomowoc, WI!  We made it here in just about 8 hours - no traffic problems around Indianapolis or Chicago.  We are settled into our room and about to crash.  Only Richard is going to get up for morning prayer tomorrow.

Very good, DR Ben, but Oconomowoc is inland (not far from where Anthony spent the summer).  I think you're thinking of Manitowoc, which is on Lake Michigan and is also a mouthful.
