My favorite singer/songwriters of the late 60s and all 70s would certainly have to include ...Jimmy Webb (although his are not my favorite versions of his songs)...

Well, I certainly hope you prefer his version of "Highwayman" over that cr@p rendition by Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson and Jennings!  The song is supposed to be sung by one person, not four!

That and "Asleep On the Wind" are my two favorite Webb songs.

Not one sliver of pie survived the afternoon surge of snackers.

That's a shame.   So you don't have no pie.    :(

Kee-rectum-oondo!

I ain't got no pie.

I also ain't got no stomach room for pie, neither!

Ron is your green beans and potatoes recipe a secret?

Ron is your green beans and potatoes recipe a secret?

No, it isn't.  It's more of  a "procedure" than a recipe.

Take one large can of Del Monte (or other brand) green beans.
Open and drain.
Fill can with water and drain again.
Re-fill can with water and allow beans to soak 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, put approximately 1/4" of water in a pan.  Add preferred seasoning.  I use a ham seasoning (flavors like smoked ham).

Drain beans from can and pour the beans into the pan.  Pour about 1/4 cup of Canola oil over beans.

Turn stovetop burner on high and allow water to reach a boil.  Then turn stovetop burner to low and cover pan.

Stir every 15 minutes or so.

Should be ready to go in about 30 minutes to one hour, depending on how many beans you're cooking.  For yesterday's pot luck, I used a 6-pound can of green beans, so I let them cook about an hour.

I cooked the red potatoes in a crock pot, again with a little water and with some Canola oil poured over the top.  This took all day.  An easier way is to put the potatoes in a pressure cooker with a little water.   Add oil.  Allow the pressure to build to maximum and turn eye down to medium.  Allow to cook about 10 minutes.  Remove from eye. Potatoes are done.

When I'm using fresh or frozen green beans, I always cook them in a pressure cooker with water and oil.  But I also add the potatoes to the pot so the beans and potatoes cook together.

The Highwayman, by Jimmy Webb.

I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his life blood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive

I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner 'round the horn to Mexico
I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still

I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around..
I'll always be around...

I'll fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again.

(It's supposed to be sung by a single soul.  Four singers, splitting it into parts, doesn't make sense.)

Yes, certain songs Jimmy does very well.  There are some especially good "demos" included in this set - and they're some of the best things he did - better than some of his "finished" albums.  That said, can't really top Glen Campbell's renditions and Richard Harris' few all-Webb albums are great.

Asleep on the Wind, by Jimmy Webb

Love is a glass of wine
Balanced on the siderail of a ship
Across the sea at midnight, it may not last the daylight
And the trip is long
And the waves are strong
But then again, it might be up there forever
I've heard of birds that never touch the land
But sleep on the winds
And if untouched by someone's careless hand
Asleep on the winds
Our love might last until the journey's end
Alive Alive

And our lives are just bubbles of time
They're rainbow-colored and
They're shining in the sun
They drift above the treetops now
In danger if the breeze drops somehow
And darling, that's all it would take
And yet we threaten not to break
And you know we could be up here forever
I've heard of birds that never touch the land
But sleep on the winds
And if untouched by someone's careless hand
Asleep on the winds
Our lives might last untill the love begins

So stay alive and let me try as hard as you do
To stay alive, please let me be as much alive as you
Alive Alive

(I don't think I've ever heard this performed by anyone other than Webb.)

Does the Webb album include the orchestral prelude to Asleep on the Wind, Land's End?  Beautiful, haunting stuff.

The rest of the afternoon I watched THE CHEETAH GIRLS - ONE WORLD.

Underwhelming is probably the best word I can choose to describe it. Yes, it was filmed on location in India, and the plot proports to cast one of the three girls as the lead in a new Bollywood movie musical. Don't get your hopes up, DR MBarnum, because there isn't a song or dance in the movie that's anything but generic Disney-styled pop rock and bop dancing.

On a production scale, it's certainly more lavish than the last big made-for-cable musical CAMP ROCK, but I didn't find it even that interesting. The girls' singing style is that over-processed whiny-nasal sound, and honestly, I can't tell one singer from the other from their voices alone.

They should have given this movie to a little girl to review. :)

I know last christmas i got my sister's niece (13) the other Cheetah Girls dvd (she asked for it for Xmas). I guess they do have fans.

I have never seen them. Although i know them from the girl who was on Dancing With the Stars.

Der Brucer is asking if I'm going to make soup tonight.

Well, of course I am.  That, and pot roast, which is in the oven already, potting.

Soup: Making a big batch of leek and potato soup, as the base for a bunch of other soups.  Tonight, ginger/carrot.

George - yes, anyone can now license The Brain From Planet X.  Have your group do it and we'll all come see it!

Our director/music director Josh checked out a copy of the CD from the library (which turns 40 today!) and he loves it!  It may happen. :D

I really don't think five nights of Jay Leno at 10 p.m. will be a ratings winner for NBC......  But I could be wrong.

I've read that NBC is considering limited programming, with possibly only a few nights a week vice a full week's programming schedule.  I'm thinking this Leno thing is part/parcel of whatever they're considering.

Nope - I never even knew the box existed - in fact, yesterday I visited the Rhino Handmade site and found I had no idea of about ninety percent of their releases - so now I'm on the lookout for their Gilbert O'Sullivan box and a couple of others.

With the upcoming Holiday Travel Season upon us, here's some good/bad news:

Tempting the Thieves With the Pocketables

Quote
Ellen Howe, a spokeswoman for the T.S.A., said Monday that the agency has fired 465 officers for theft since the spring of 2003. That is “a minuscule fraction of the work force,” she said.

She also said incidents were down sharply. In 2005, she said, the agency paid $3 million in claims for missing possessions or damaged bags. “This year it has been less than $1 million,” she said.

*And there will be a follow-up article next week focusing on safety tips and travel precautions.
