The making of the soup is underway.

A few crawdads would add flavor.

I forgot about the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.  That's one of the best.

I would have also listed QUATERMASS AND THE PIT (FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH), another favorite, but that's from the 1960s.

Question:

I know I'm in the minority here, but what is the big deal about FORBIDDEN PLANET?

I know it's inspired by Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST, but I've always found it to be rather dull, talky and totally lacking in suspense.

What am I missing?

That's prety cool!  The last time that Capital Playhouse did the show (with Jeff Kingsbury as Frank), they put together a video show very much like this and showed it during the song.  It was very well done. :)

I thought I was the only one DR DRuxy! I never cared that much for FORBIDDEN PLANET when I was a kid. I have often thought of watching it again, but just never felt compelled to do it, so far.

You are missing how spectacular that film was to a theatre go-er in 1956 - stand it up against Flash Gordon in B&W on a 11" TV screen.

No disrespect intended, but "Spectacle" does not make a good movie.

Story, Screenplay, Acting and Directing does.

Among today's piles of mail were two envelopes from NY State Dept of Taxation for amounts they claim due on my 2003 and 2004 returns totalling about $6000! I am completely floored since i thought this was all handled two years ago. Of course, to complicate matters, my tax accountant is out of town till next Monday. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

For an 18-year old, the visual excitement was well worth the $0.50 admission.

Story, Screenplay, Acting and Directing were a dime-a-dozen on TV - but not spectacle.

I take it you don't like Fantasia or 2001.

While I ate lunch, I watched another NCIS episode, the last on disc 3 of the set. In this one, Tony and Ziva are trapped in a steel shipping container at the dock and no one knows how to find them amid the thousands of containers there. Pretty good story with some good give-and-take between the two cohorts.

Not much of a mystery in this one, and the one "surprise" reveal near the end was so telegraphed that it was ludicrous.

Druxy,

My defense of FP came easy - when I got the new DVD release and watched it, I kept saying to myself - "Why did I remmeber liking this film?"

For today's audience, I suspect it is a Turkey - I didn't bother taking it to MD for the Grandlads to watch.

Then, I spent the next two hours luxuriating with BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S.  Always one of my very favorite films, I remember not going to it when it premiered but it was reissued with SABRINA after MY FAIR LADY was such a big hit, and I begged my mother to take me after school one day to Charlotte to see them. (I couldn't drive alone yet; I only had a learner's permit then.) She had some shopping she wanted to do, so she dropped me off at the theater, and I saw it for the first time in 1965. Just fell in love with the movie and everyone in it. I laughed and cried and thought George Peppard was so sexy; I couldn't figure out why Holly wasn't drawn to him instantly.

When she picked me up after the two movies, the mall was still open, and I begged her to let me go buy the "soundtrack" LP. Of course, I loved all the music, but I was so disappointed that it wasn't a soundtrack but a rerecording of the music in the movie AND there was no Audrey Hepburn track of her singing "Moon River" on it! Still have that album and still love it, but I never have forgotten that initial disappointment.

As I suspected, the transfer is identical to the last issue of the film. I did an A/B comparison and it's the exact same encode. (Even the same exact number of bits in the MPEG-2 encodings of the two DVDs). The saturation of color is rich and sharpness is fine, but that light green tint gives it all a kind of drab appearance. It doesn't sparkle at all.

Before she went to the Vet she had been acting sluggish, then started throwing up, and her incision was oozing - glad my SIL took her right to the Vet and didn't wait a day to see if she'd get better.

I had listened to the producer's commentary track before. Very bland with not much information, lots of long silences, and some errors. He claims Audrey's singing of "Moon River" was the first time she had sung on film!
