I finally saw SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE today.

I think it's a very good film; difficult to get emotionally involved with for the first half hour or so, but after that, you get swept along with it.

I certainly enjoyed it much more than BENJAMIN BUTTON and MILK.

However, I think that both THE READER and FROST/NIXON are better films.  At least, I liked them better.

On the other hand, I think that the Best Picture Oscar is going to go to either SLUMDOG or BENJAMIN BUTTON.

When I went to REVOLUTIONARY ROAD yesterday I talked to the ticket seller and was very pleased to hear MILK is definitely going to be here soon.  I requested FROST/NIXON and she told me they are trying but aren't sure

Is it blowing snow? I've heard that's a lot like the regular kind, only it moves around.

Finished Magnificent Obsession - a fine weepie.  I'm listening to Mary Martin in Hello, Dolly!  Deelightful.  The only problem with Archiv is that they obviously have gotten a CDR of the album master from which they duplicate.  Unfortunately, it hasn't been remastered and it's completely lackluster in sound quality and oomph and there are volume differences between tracks, all of which would have been fixed had this actually was released officially.  The big question is why RCA never bothered, since it's the best of the Dolly recordings.  To hear Miss Martin's beautiful tones on these songs instead of Miss Channing's screeching, is wonderful.

I absolutely LOVE what Mary does with the end of "I Put My Hand In."

I didn't quite finish the set. I still have two more episodes to go, so I'll have to do them tomorrow morning. I'd love to be done with the set by the time I log on tomorrow morning at 10.

Then I get back to movies for a few days. Up next is the NOAH'S ARC movie.

Does this mean after today's castrecl that I've now had the "fifteen minutes" I'm entitled to?

You can follow Sarah Palin's example and refuse to give it up.

I did stop and watch figure skating tonight by watching only the skaters and skipping everything else. Was able to do it in about an hour (the two hour broadcast). Alissa Cezny certainly had gorgeous spins and the best posture of the final girls, but she had no triple-triple combination. She can't possibly compete with those Japanese girls who do triple axels (and one does a quad) without a triple triple. At least Flat and Zhang both had triple-triples. I don't think Ashley Wagner had one either.

And TWO of the girls in the top six short program didn't even do triple flips or lutzes! Good lord! Can't compete on the world level without those essential triples.

I finished tidying up the apartment while Channel 13 showed AUNTIE MAME. What a great movie! At 11, when Mame was visiting Upson Downs, I switched channels to BURN NOTICE. Good episode!

I forgot to mention all the other great guest stars in episodes I watched this evening. Roscoe Lee Browne, Lou Gossett, Jr., J.D. Cannon, James Daly, Phyllis Thaxter, Ed Asner, Barbara Hershey, Barry Morse, R.G. Armstrong, Arthur Franz.

Atlantic City Report #1: From the standing room only capacity at the high-roller tables, one would never know that a recession was going on.

*As for my own "low rolling".  I was up $23.00 at one point, but ended up finishing down $42.00... Then walked away from the table.

**However, since my parents actually gave me some money to wager, well... ;)

Atlantic City Report #2: The dinner buffet was very good.  One of this "a little bit of everthing" deals: salads, seafood, prime rib, Italian, Chinese, fruits, vegetables, desserts.  The entrees were quite good, and since the restaurant was busy, there were fresh trays of food being put out every five to ten minutes.

Alas, the dessert station was not so good.  The mini-chocolate-covered canolli were the best thing on there, with the soft-serve ice cream coming in a not so close second.  Everything else didn't even place.  -And remained untouched on my plate after the first bite.  However, that may have been a good thing. ???

*After giving them another try, I've truly decided that crabs, well, even crab legs require too much effort to eat.  Count me in as one of those who believes that all the "work" should be done before the food lands on the table.  However, my parents and their friends thoroughly enjoyed them, and I lost track of the number of shell-covered plates that got cleared from the table.

Atlantic City Report #3: There are a lot of casinos in Atlantic City, and a lot of casino carpets.  In fact, most casinos seemed to have at least three different carpet patterns, one for each area: table games, slots, and Asian games.  I didn't make it into all the casinos here, but I believe I did hit at least eight of them.  In the process, I ended up walking almost all of the boardwalk.

*Pictures will be posted in due time. ;)

I was out of college before the first gal landed a triple in competition:
Petra Burka, 1962 Canadian championships (first triple jump by a woman)

First gal triple/triple;Tara Lipinski, 1997 US Nationals

I didn't really notice being noticed.  Now, if I had taken pics of the ceilings - with all of the surveillance cameras - I might be telling a different story right now.

*However, I do believe Monkey may have attracted a glance or giggle or two.  ;)

DR Druxy - I, too, thought/think that "Frost/Nixon" is a better movie than "Slumdog Millionaire".  I'm not exactly sure why I think that, I just do.  However, I really do credit a major part of the success of "Frost/Nixon" to the original stage play, and Frank Langella's star turns in both versions.

*But I think I'll be buying the DVD of "Slumdog Millionaire" long before I consider "Frost/Nixon".

**For some reason, "The Reader" left me a bit cold. I thought the story concentrated a bit too much on the central couple to the exclusion of the backdrop of post-World War II Germany - everyone was trying to pick up the pieces and start over again, and to re-find their national identity.  And even though the movie is told in flashback, I really wish the trailer had not included a scene from the closing ten minutes.

I did pretty well at rehearsal today, so I am going to reward myself and watch an art film that elmore sent me and then watch TROPICAL THUNDER.

Isn't is just "Tropic Thunder"?  ;)

I only bring it up since there was some TV interview the other morning, where the host kept "changing" the title of the movie: "Tropic Thunder", "Tropic of Thunder", "Tropical Thunder", "Tropics Thunder".  Needless to say, Robert Downey, Jr., kept looking at her quizzically.

A couple of castrecl folk had problems with the use of the word  "thee-ter" and rhyming it with "sweeter" - which I had felt OK to use when we recorded because of this Times article of a few weeks back:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/28/theater/28gree.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

THEATER
Thee-a-tuh or Thee-ter? Try Both

By JESSE GREEN
DEEP in their scone-envying souls, many Americans suspect that British actors are better than their own countrymen at performing classic plays. But are they?

etc.

Since I don't read/subscribe to CastRecL - even though I know I should - this may be "old news", but...

Wasn't the whole "thee-a-tuh", "thee-ter", "swee-uh-tuh", "swee-ter" thing covered in "[title of show]"?

BIKHRE MOTI (1971) starring Jeetendra and Babita.......brothers separated in childhood..one good and one bad, crying mothers, adopted daughters, plenty of coincidental meetings, a bit of "dishoom, dishoom," Helen doing an item number,  and finally some squishy dil.

I would ask for a translation of the above, but I'm afraid that it would take all the mystery out of Bollywood for me.
