I'll be working on the new-to-video SPACE BUDDIES from Disney in Blu-ray this afternoon. I've never seen either of the previous films (though I'm familiar with the premise), so it'll be interesting to see how this looks in high definition.

There are a few bonus features on the disc, too, but since the movie is only 84 minutes, I'm hoping to be completely done with it this afternoon.

I have four more shows from last week on the DVR to watch. I'll watch PSYCH while I eat lunch. MONK, THE OFFICE, and 30 ROCK will be saved for tonight.

Another big Criterion shipment came in: HOBSON'S CHOICE (a film I dearly love) and two John Cassavetes films (FACES, SHADOWS), neither of which I've ever seen.

That makes five Criterions which have come in but since the first two don't come out until February 10th, they're down in the review stack and I might not get to any of them this week.

And the word of the day is: THALASSIC!
If Steven Spielberg makes a film about giant squid, whales, and other denizens of the deep, the obvious title would be THALASSIC Park.

I didn't order that, but I did order MR. CHIPS, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, and THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE, and none of them have even shipped! To save fifty cents each, I ordered from Deep Discount. Clearly, that was a mistake.

Just think of it this way - you'll be able to call the movie a real dog, and have it come out as a complement!

It is currently snowing here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Not heavily, but it is sticking, and our driveway is covered with white.

Since der B was talking about our heading to the markets later today, I suppose I'd better scrape all that white to the sides, or we'll never make it up the driveway.

I hate that THE MENTALIST is a rerun tonight, but as I recall, it's a pretty good one with Leslie Hope as a psychic who spars with Jane on "tricks of the trade."

A little follow-up on the UGLY BETTY situation that I mentioned yesterday. When it goes on hiatus in March, it will still have five episodes that haven't aired. I suppose if ABC's plan to program two sitcoms in that hourlong slot backfires, they could be pulled and BETTY put back in its place. ABC assures us that it hasn't lost faith in the show, but only time will reveal its ultimate fate.

I can say from reading about one of the shows that goes into the slot, it doesn't hold much interest for me, and I've never warmed to SAMANTHA WHO?

I guess I'll do some computer maintenance and then head down to check the mail and start thinking about what's for lunch.

I'm wondering if today might be a good day to ride the new light rail downtown to take a photo of the floating jellyfish and then post it here. What do you think?

As for the whole digital TV, convertor box issue, well...

When I was in Richmond, Steve found out that he could actually get the digital HD signals via a set of rabbit ears he had set up.  ???

I think one of the other concerns with the proposed delay/postponement, is that it could end up getting delayed and postponed again. And again. The local TV stations/affiliates have already done their conversion - and spent a lot of money doing so - and in many areas, a lot of stations are already broadcasting in digital/HD in addition to their regular analog signal.  The local stations don't want to be "wasting" money by having to run both their analog and digital transmission equipment at the same time.

There have been lots of new commercials lately, and many stations have also run "Are you ready for the switch?" tests where they've turned off the analog signal for a brief period of time - usually during a newscast - and if you stopped receiving a picture, well...

DR MBarnum - Your compassion is not misplaced, but, at least from all the TV commercials and newspaper articles I've seen in NYC and in Richmond over the past year, the upcoming switch to digital should not have been a surprise to anyone.  And, unfortunately and inevitably, even if the switch does get postponed, there will undoubtedly still be a number of people "surprised" when it happens.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I shall have to ponder that whilst I am playing for potential cast members of a new show this afternoon.  Maybe I'll get some "ideas" from the people coming in.

I am curious to know from the folks here -- is it difficult to install that converter box? Has anyone here done it? (It seems most folks here have cable or satellite.)

All of the seniors in my senior choir are calling me, completely panicked, as there are actual flakes of snow on the ground, preventing them from singing today.  ;)

It's a very easy install.  It's a one cable/cord hook-up, and then you plug it in.
