Kitchen counters might be next on my list of home improvements.

That would be nice! What kind were you thinking about getting?

Gerry Niewood was an undervalued genius.  I'm shocked and saddened.

I am currently listening to the OLC of Man of La Mancha courtesy of CASTRECL.

Is posting on DVD Talk like tilting with windmills?

I may have shared this charming anecdote before, but I learned to read and write phonetically.  When I was in the first grade, we had a "newspaper" (The First Grade Times--I named it meself, guv'nah) where all the kids wrote little articles.  I wrote a little ditty about my Dad's exploits in the war, and how my mom hoped my Dad was never in another war.  Except that I spelled it "whore."

Very funny.  Was it published that way?

TODAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...

It's Stockard Channing's birthday!  Born today in 1944 in New York, New York.

Too bad we didn't know a little early - I could have had Vicky yell "Happy Birthday" to her during the curtain call of Pal Joey!

I love Stockard Channing, but even her appearance wouldn't be enough to get me to see PAL JOEY.

Well in her case it was a class requirement, a field trip away from school for the day and best of all FREE!! Not to mention the bonus of meeting up with Jose!  She had a wonderful day!

I'm thinking the silestone or corian-type product, gray-specked -- like beach sand.

I never saw Pal Joey.  All I know is the Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered and I never knew it came from Pal Joey until the Vixter brought home the Playbill

In my DVD burner right now about to be burned onto a DVD is the 1925 silent movie version of "The Wizard of Oz," starring, written, produced and directed by Larry Semon, that was broadcast on TCM a couple of months ago.  If you only know the story from the Judy Garland movie, you still won't know the story from this version.  It was co-written by L Frank Baum, Jr., yes...the son of the original author, but Robert Osborne in his introduction says that this version of the story (which Larry Semon had wanted to do for years) really has nothing to do with the original story in the books.

You do know DS Betsy's maiden name was Semon, don't you?  I'll let you draw your own conclusions...  ;D

Is that why she married a man with an uncanny resemblance to the Cowardly Lion?

That sounds nice.  I am trying to think what colors I should use since I want to keep my oak cabinets and black and almond appliances.  Vixdad and I both really like various shades of blue but I am not sure if it would go with the appliances.

However I did see, on one kitchen redo on the TV recently, a backspalsh made up of small glass tiles (maybe 1' square) that were various shades of blue mixed with black and that looked very pretty and might work - I cannot remember what they did for the countertops though, and they used white cabinets.

Remember that the backsplash is what "dates" your kitchen the most. At least that's what I learned on HGVT.

I also would love to redo my downstairs bathroom also original from 1955 with it;s yellow and black tile and yellow fomica counter top.  That is exactly the type of countertop I want for the bath.  I would love for the rest of teh bathroom to be all white so I could change the look by bringing in different curtains and rugs and towels and pictures as the seasons change - maybe blues with light houses and boats in the summer , browns and golds and pictures of colored leaves in the fall etc etc

You can buy the sinktops and vanities at Lowe's or Home Depot for a few hundred dollars.

Now see,  that would be do-able.  The kitchen places all talk about $15,000 - $25,000 to redo a kitchen - that is just crazy talk as far as I am concerned!

The biggest problem with redoing the downstairs bath ourselves is Vixdad doesn't think we would be able to get the old tub out and a new one in .  The builders  must have put the tub in  befoe allteh walls were up in the house because the doorway and  the window are too small to fit a tub ,plus the hallway is too narrow to get teh tub through even if it fit throught the door.

I wonder if we could get the current one (yellow) re-enambled.   It is a sturdy cast iron tub and it really holds the heat of the hot water for a long time - it just is dull from 54 years of use and cleaners etc.

I had every intention of going to Hugo's until I got outside and felt how cold it was.  Hugo's loves to keep their restaurant a little chilly, so I just picked up some packages and got a sandwich from Subway and came home to the blessed heat.

Listening to a very fun CD - Margaret Whiting and Mel Torme duetting on songs from B'way shows of the early 60s - Do Re Mi, Wildcat, Irma La Douce, and the like - with great charts by Russ Garcia who right around that time wrote the marvelously marvelous score to George Pal's The Time Machine.

Indeed, that's his solo on "Feels So Good."

It is certainly worth looking into.  I've know people to be very happy with the process.  Of course you need to find someone who does a good job ;)

Hmmm, now I'm wondering how DR Danise's house is coming along.

You can get a bathtub redone for a couple hundred dollars. It might not last too long, though.

The plumber had to remove our old one -- he did it with a sledge hammer and took it out in pieces. The plumber's assistant (his son) and friend put the new one in. They were young and strong. You might ask a plumber about putting in a new tub. The tub itself was only about $300.

When I was in 7th grade boys' choir (the first singing I ever did), we sang this with our own made-up arm-choreography...and I still remember most of it. ;D
