On AOL, what does it mean when the message status is "Received"  a few hours after you send it, but not marked as "Read" until still more hours later?

How was the signing, DR DRUXY?

Not the best.  Not the worst.  Several old friends showed up to get a book and say "goodbye".

Parking for the bookstore is a nightmare, which is probably one of the reasons that they're going out of business.

Most Academy Ratio films I have on DVD fill the screen to begin with, unless I am doing something wrong - which is entirely possible.

You're definitely doing something wrong if Academy ratios fill the widescreen TV viewing area. They should be in the center with bars on the right and left. You must have the picture mode on your TV set to one of the stretch or fill modes.

I always watch Academy ratio pictures with the bars on the left and right whether it be for review purposes or just for my own pleasure (if you stretch them, you're going to be cutting off parts of the image and thus missing them). The only time I stretch an image to fill the screen is when I have a nonanamorphic widescreen picture like the Hammer HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES or WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, and the picture is windowboxed (black bars above, below, right, and left). Then I expand the picture to let the picture make use of the widescreen area.

Good morning!

More rain and it is COLD! Not getting out of the 30s today but by Thursday, we're supposed to be comfortably back into the high 60s, so I guess winter is going to hold on for dear life for a few more days.

Today I start work on the four-film Criterion/Eclipse box TRAVELS WITH HIROSHI SHIMIZU. I have never seen any of these four films.

The first film (which I'll watch this afternoon) was made in 1933, but it's a silent movie: JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR.

My adorable greatnephew Jayden was the ring bearer at his uncle's wedding yesterday. He's wearing his first tuxedo.

He is QUITE Adorable. Who is his Cutie?

One of his cousins; I don't know her name. I think she has a certain Rubenesque beauty to her. She looks very Flemish 17th-Centry to me.

And I'm looking forward to seeing my first-ever episode of DAMAGES in high definition. I glanced at a couple of minutes of last week's episode the other night after I stumbled onto the HD Showcase channel, and I was blown away by the improvement in the quality from the regular FX broadcast. I am really stoked about this.

Off to church. Then I have to take the visiting Big Cheese from the District Office to the airport. I am going to drive him in the 19-year-old Honda so he can see how humble I am.

That wasn't very humble, was it? ;)

I don't know about a Super Drive, DR JOSE - but the description on Ebay when I bought it read:

CD/DVD R/W drive - which I assume meant read/write.

DR JRand - The SuperDrive is CD/DVD R/W.  However, most of the older iMacs came with CD-ROM drives that were CD-R/W, DVD-R. -Which is what my previous iBook had... Which sort of confused me since I also had iDVD, so I thought I could write DVDs too.  Nope.  However, what it allowed me to do was to transfer DVD content to my hard-drive, and then convert it and burn it into another file type so that it could be burned as a video file onto a blank CDR.  Or something like that.  So...

-Click on the Apple icon in the top left hand corner of your screen.
-Click on "About This Mac"
-Click on "More Info..." -That should bring up "System Profiler"
-Under the Hardware listing, click on "Disc Burning" -There you will see a listing of the CD and DVD reading and writing capabilities. If you don't see "Disc Burning", click on "ATA". Under the "Model" info it should tell you what kind of disc drive you have.

Singdaw,
For some people the cheap, ready-made readers work fine--it depends largely on your Rx, plus how much you read. Many people have custom reading glasses made because progressives just don't meet all our needs. With a progressive lens you must look through the lowest part your lens to read, which means that your reading material must be virtually in your lap--at least for me.  When I'm on the computer or reading in bed I look through the middle part of my lens, which is intended not for reading, but more "room distance" according to how the progressive is made.  When I had a bifocal it drove me nuts to have to keep jumping over the line. So a progressive plus reading glasses works for me. When I need a new Rx I often get the readers first; if I can't read well with an old progressive it doesn't really bother me. I only buy a new progressive when I need a new distance Rx.
