LOL DR Cilla, I wasn’t actually looking for book suggestions,.  I have a long list of books I want to read with close to 70 authors.  Of course many of those authors have multiple books to be read. If you read WHITE TIGER please let me know what you think.

I've had my walk and I guess it's time to begin Mr Raines' Houston concert work. I'm surprised DR MBarnum doesn't own a copy of THE WILD MCCULLOCHS alreasdy. I would think Mr Hand's about the right age now to date him.

Sounds like our DR MBarnum's current social life with his Bollywood movies.

*ahem*

...anyway, the only times I can recall watching The Merv Griffin Show:

The 20th or 25th anniversary of the Peanuts comic strip with guest Charles Shulz

Abbe Hoffman wearing a shirt made from an American flag which was considered so subversive that his appearance was blanked out throughout the show.  Virginia Graham was another guest who looked like she was sitting next to an alien.

The final show, all of which I can remember is that Griffin and Arthur Treacher got into a horse-drawn buggy and were carted away at the end of the show.

I've got one of these stupid soaps on for company, THE YOUNG AND THE BEAUTIFUL, whatever, and there's this actwess from the "whispering hope" school of acting: whisper your lines and hope you're good. She's driving me crazy. In the immortal words of Paul Muni: remember, dear, you can't F**k the audience. I wonder what schmoe she did do for the role.

Arthur Treacher! There used to be this Kenley Players juvenile, Terrence Monk, who was one of Arthur's "proteges." I wonder if he and Merv compared notes? Monk was in a lot of Kenley shows: WHERE'S CHARLEY?, BLOSSOM TIME, THE FANTASTICKS. I see he died in 2003.

Was The Merv Griffin Show done in NYC or L.A.?  (I'm talking about the CBS show that ran opposite Johnny Carson.)

and of course Jack Douglas and his wife Reiko.

Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Reiko?

I remember Jack Douglas and his wife, Reiko.  Unfortunately, wits and raconteurs like Mr. Douglas are no longer a staple of the talk show circuit.  It's always some star plugging something...

Weren't his two books entitled, NEVER TALK TO A NAKED BUS DRIVER & MY BROTHER WAS AN ONLY CHILD?

DR Michael S - Where did you pull up that list of "Top 25 Talk Shows"?  -I'm just trying to figure out the basis for the ranking. Nielsen points? Number of syndication outlets? How much ad space they bought?  Someone's personal opinions? In any case...

#9 - "106 & Park" is on BET.  I'm not sure I'd call it a "talk show" since it's more or a "music showcase".  Even BET markets it as their "most popular music series of all time".

#15 - "The Doctors" is an almost-spin-off of Dr. Phil.  -He's the main producer.  It's only in it's first season of syndication, so how it would end up on the "Top 25" list already - ???  It's hosted by one of the former bachelor's from "The Bachelor".

#21 - "The Sunday Night Sex Show" is almost already a classic due to the very frank and very "real" and very funny host, Sue Johanson.  It was based out of Canada, and was shown on the "W" network.  The show was then picked up by the "Oxygen" network on this side of the border, and was retitled "Talk Sex with Sue Johanson".  That show ended last year, but there are still some random repeats shown every now and then.  And there's always YouTube.

#23 - Steve Wilkos was the head security guy from "The Jerry Springer Show".  -I didn't realize he had a talk show either.

#25 - "Loose Women" is an English talk show.  It sometimes pops up on BBC America.

You forgot to mention my father ate lunch at said business at least a couple of times a week.  I met your father years & years before I met you.  When I ate there I always got lots of extra cherries in my Shirley Temples :)

As for the Topic of the Day...

The one and only "Johnny Carson".

He just had so much Music on his show.  And so many different types of artists and bands.  I still remember:

-Liberace playing "Rhapsody in Blue".  -The whole 17 minute piece with the Tonight Show Band!
-Joshua Bell's many appearances.
-Randy Graff singing "I Dreamed A Dream" - with a synthed out string section.
-Elinore O'Connell (from the L.A. company of Les Miz) singing "I Dreamed A Dream" with a real string section.
-Suzanne Somers singing a TV-theme medley that included the theme from "The Jeffersons"
-Almost all the times that "New York, New York" got sung - and Johnny even put together a montage of those performances - I believe it was the most performed, repeated song sung on the show by different artists.

Etc., etc., etc..

And, of course, there was always "Carnac, The Magnificent".

Q: What did Mrs. Yul Brynner do on the night of their honeymoon.

Topic of the Day, Part 2...

I also watched a lot of "Donahue"...

-One of the various reunions of the original cast of A Chorus Line.  -And I remember Robert LuPone having to leave half-way through the show since he had to get to his Wednesday matinee - he was still playing Zach.
-Laurie Beechman singing "Long Before I Knew You" and other songs while talking about her battle with cancer.

And then...

-A sort of infamous and painful "Gay for Pay" show where an "Actor" revealed to his mother - who was in the audience - that he was doing gay porn.
-There was also a Playgirl models show.
-And I also seem to remember one Chippendales show where one of the guys set his crotch on fire.  On purpose.  And then went around to the women in the audience who would blow him out. ::)

I have ordered a copy of THE MCCULLOUGHS so that I can see Mr Hand In Action!
