: : In the original Frank Loesser score, the expression is "sheep's eye and the LICKERISH tooth." Loesser eplained how he arrived at it in a letter that's printed in his daughter's fine biography of him, A MOST REMARKABLE FELLA (page 109). The short of it is that he wanted a companion word that meant "covetous", fearing "sheep's eye" did not completely convey the exact thoughts of the guy who would be gazing at her. He went to Roget's and found that "lecherous" was a sort of synonym for covetous, but didn't quite like the way it sounded, so he consulted the Oxford English Dictionary and found that two archaic spellings of "lecherous" were "licorice" and "lickerish." He chose the latter. Voila!

Many thanks, Scott - I've been trying to tease out the meaning for many years. My ear always heard that application, but I couldn't come up with the "lickerish" thing. Thanks again - I can sleep easier.

TOD:

CD:  the divoon Rosemary Clooney singing' and swingin' with her paramour Nelson Riddle.  I know I'm slow on the uptake sometimes, but I never realized that the television theme for Peyton Place was the film theme for Return to Peyton Place, which Rosie sings on this CD.

DVD:  the hilarious, four-star-plus LOST IN AUSTEN (hmmm---are they BK fans?), an extremely clever send up of Pride and Prejudice.  It's almost 3 hours (we're about 2 hours into it), but it is one of the swiftest moving and most enjoyable things I've seen recently.  If you're an Austen fan, or especially if you love the 1995 BBC version of P&P, you MUST, MUST, MUST get this.

I have it but I haven't watched it yet.

OMG!!!    :o

All we all getting sued for defamation of character today?     :)

Since when is TRUTH "defamation of character"?    ;)

There's a French saying that goes:

"La vérité n'est pas toujours bonne à dire!"

("Truth does not necessarily need to be told"!)

---------------

Now, why did that choreographer need to have an elderly Channing "manipulated" like that?  (Over the heads of the dancers!)
To me that was looking for trouble and getting it!

Michael Stewart loved Carol Channing in "Dolly" (as does Jerry Herman), and they always knew they'd make money if she did another tour, so they were (and are) loath to say anything against her, but you could tell they had to put up with a lot.

Oh, I would "put up with a lot" if the money was rolling in! I WOULD! ;)

Why, I never! (as she stomps off in a huff) ...

Unless of course that's some sort of quote from Shakespeare, then I'll take it as a compliment (as she bats her eyelashes and smiles sweetly all the while thinking "DR SlumDawMillionaire shouldn't be wearing puce, it's not in his color palate")...

Ahh, what an insightful metaphor, DR Francois !

Oh, my -- DR Francois, you are even more clever with that metaphor than I first interpreted

Miss Channing + BK "The Electrician" = Don't mix  (as in sound mixing issues)

You clever minx -- bk's notes reduced to a metaphor

[I just can see Pearl Bailey being carried above the dancers' heads!!] :D
