ON THIS DAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...

The New York Shakespeare Festival production of THE THREEPENNY OPERA opened on Broadway on this day in 1976 at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre.

Things were different in those days--the cast recording was done a month later on June 21 but the album was not released until October of that year.

Good morning!

CLoudier than previous days this week, and we had a sprinkling of rain earlier, but I believe it's going to pass on by without the downpour they were predicting. Highs back up to 80 today.

I hope BRIDE WARS comes today and early enough so I don't have to start on NOTORIOUS. I would really wait wait to do it. But I'll do the first one that's avauilable when the time comes to start work.

I'm on-line a bit earlier this morning than usual. I plan to head out to Home Depot in a little while to pick up some items. Then, I'll circle my way back to the shopping center near my home where I do my usual Friday errands.

I recorded that GREY GARDENS strictly on the positive word of mouth I read about it here. I did watch about 15 minutes of it last night before UGLY BETTY began but forgot to mention it. It's OK, but I still prefer the original (i.e. real) people (so far).

THE LUSTY MONTH OF MAY

GUENEVERE:
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear!
It's May! It's May!
That gorgeous holiday
When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad
Will be a cad!
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!

Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does its scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating ev'rywhere?
Don't you know it's that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la! That dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la!

GUENEVERE & CHORUS:
Tra la la la la [etc.]

GUENEVERE:
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That darling month when ev'ryone throws
Self-control away.
It's time to do
A wretched thing or two,
And try to make each precious day
One you'll always rue!
It's May! It's May!
The month of "yes you may,"
The time for ev'ry frivolous whim,
Proper or "im."
It's wild! It's gay!
A blot in ev'ry way.
The birds and bees with all of their vast
Amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast,
The lusty month of May.

CHORUS:
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear.
It's May! It's May!
The month of great dismay.

GUENEVERE:
When all the world is brimming with fun,
Wholesome or "un."

GUENEVERE & CHORUS:
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!

Bye for now.

Yes I know, goodbye for now,
How long? ~ a year, a day?
Yes I love you, yes you're with me,
here now, next to me, and worlds away!
See I free you, and I'll see you when I see you,
fine, OK?
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,
[ Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/spR ]
at leave to come an' go, you as well as I,
somehow each
"hello"
makes it worth
"goodbye"
for now!
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,
at leave to come an' go, you as well as I,
somehow each
"hello"
makes it worth
"goodbye"
for now!
Goodbye . . . hmm . . . goodbye

BK:

Re The Fleischer Superman Cartoons.

Are these JUST the 9 cartoons that were made before The Fleischer  studio was dissolved? (IMHO these were better more science fiction style)

Or do they also include the finale 8 cartoons that were made by Famous Studios? (Paramount bought out the The Fleischer Studio. Not as good as the others more WW2 style with Superman fighting the Japanese

All the above were included on the multi disc Superman box set from last year. Have they been remastered/improved in any way?

I can't answer the SUPERMAN cartoon question. I've never seen any of those and have never kept up with them.

This will be an odd weekend for me.  When in LA, first weekend in May was always Derby Week where we threw our annual Derby Party for anywhere from sixty to eighty friends and neighbours.  Out in California, it was always a big deal as our LA friends were greatly amused to see all the ex-patriot Kentuckians gets weepy-eyed and nostalgic singing My Old Kentucky Home and watching the Run For The Roses.  Of course, it was also just a great excuse to throw a Spring party.

But moving here, we found everyone usually had long-standing committments for the Day...so we've had to find other days and other excuses for throwing a big bash.  This year, Julieanne is in San Jose, doing her continuing education for her therapy license and I might go to a Derby party actually thrown by our theatre board president.  I haven't even checked out the horses running this year.

TOD:  Nellie Lutcher singing "Hurry On Down, "Fine Brown Frame" and "The Lady's in Love"

The Boswell Sisters doing a whole bunch of great things.  Their arrangements were great, and the were as good at imitating musical instruments as the Mills Brothers-- it's a shame they never recorded together.

Anita Ellis singing "Put the Blame on Mame,"  "Atlanta, GA" and "I Wonder What Became of Me"  (one of Johnny Mercer's best)

Maureen McGovern singing "Only When I Laugh"

On my frequent play list on my computer:

Main title to 1980's TV show "Tucker's Witch" with a charming theme written by J.A.C. Redford!

Morning, Ben.  Tell Ant hello for me.  I know you're glad to have him back, but the little dance you do after getting used to being on your own is a little awkward-- you know little things like getting used to the fact that if you put something on the counter it stays there until you move it.  Having another person in the house again is always nice, though.

I'm having some tea and a breakfast wrap at Argo Tea. Quite tasty. argotea.com

It's a little cloudy and cool here in Chicago right now, but at least it's not raining. There's a midday piano recital at Sherwood Conservatory sponsored by the Chicago Pianoforte Society that I'm in interested in attending, but I think I may just end up at the Art Institute of Chicago all day. I'm just going to see where the day and my feet take me.
