Today I received notice from the IRS that they have decided they owe me a refund. All I have to do is mail a request for said refund and they will send me the check for twenty-one cents.

Have you priced the cost of the stamp to mail the letter?

der Brucer

I know. Why didn't they just send the check along with the notice?

If you charge them interest retroactively at current market rates, you should have enough for a stamp and small profit in about 50 years.

If I add the IRS refund to the State of AZ refund, I'll have almost a dollar and a quarter! Almost.

This just in...

Susan Boyle came in second.

Was it the public only that voted? (i'm assuming yes).

I wonder why she sang the same song again.  I wonder if her meltdown this week contributed.

I'm curious what others think of Diversity (dance group that won). I saw their semi-finals. And while they were okay. they certainly weren't spectacular to me.

Paul Potts also repeated his first aria, Nessun Dorma, for the finals.  They are free to use whatever they think is their best.

Susan wanted to sing "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee" but she was advised not to!  ;)

Probably because it costs them more than 21 cents to process the check.

I suspect you can just leave the money there and apply it to next year's return

And apparently the iTunes version of the new West Side Story will have two exclusive tracks not available on the Barnes and Noble version.  But it will not have the bonus tracks exclusive to the Barnes and Noble version.

I am sure it will disappear and won't be able to be applied to next year's return.

I also paid my respects, as it were, to the Virgin Megastore at Union Square.  The signs say they are going into their last week, and that everything is now 40%-off.  There is a lot of stock left on the shelves - I'm guessing they consolidated a bunch of the stuff from the now-closed Times Square location. Of course, since that's 40% off of the list price, it's basically Amazon pricing. ;) However, since the electronics and accessories are also 40% off, there are some pretty good deals in that department.

*However, I was tempted to buy one of the many(!) 5-disc CD changers they used for the in-house sound system.  They're going for $30 each.  We shall see...

Has the Virgin in LA bit the dust too?  I was shocked, when in London this January, to see the Virgin Mega Store in Picadilly has closed.  Is the internet just killing them all?  The HMV looked shabbier than I had ever seen it as well.  Dress Circle was holding its own, but not quite what it once was.

The Times Square location closed about two months ago, and I believe the Union Square and L.A. locations started their official Closing sales at the beginning of this month.

As for what did them in, well... Yes, the internet (legal and illegal downloads) undoubtedly contributed to their demise.  However, I also think that consumers just got smarter in a sense.  There's been some weird "math" in regards to CD prices: as the cost to produce them came down, the retail cost of them went up.

I also know that Virgin, in particular, was affected by the real estate market.  Their stores were in prime locations with ever-increasing rents.  Rumor was the the rent on the NYC locations was going to increase 3 to 5-fold if not more.

There were no bargains at the Virgin Megastores.

Virgin on Sunset (the megastore) has been gone for two years now.  I predicted Hollywood would follow and no one believed me.  It's closing in a week or two.

LATIMES

The latest in CA's budget fiasco:

Quote
Schwarzenegger would save $100 million by suspending laws requiring the state to pay for a variety of local government services, including offering absentee ballots before elections, resolving child custody problems, investigating deaths at mental hospitals, posting safety signs on beaches, collecting DNA samples from bodies, caring for abandoned pets and many more.

Local governments would have to pay for the services or stop providing them.

My prognosis:

The legislature will be unable to agree on a budget.

Interest groups whose ox is about to be gored (and there are many) will be filing suits in Federal court to stop to funding cuts.

Either way, CA will end up in receivership and a Federal judge will attempt to sort out the mess – good luck! No one has proposed a workable solution that would not require a rewrite of the CA constitution (to undo the damage caused by past voter initiatives) and a major overhaul of exiting employee contracts – Admin types at California Universities pulling down $300,000/yr need a major pay cut.

Thunderstorms here....with hail and tornadoes...north of my location....barely.

I WANTED to like THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, but it was not to be.  I have not read the graphic novel.

TOD:  added, in honor of a gentleman we were discussing earlier this week:

A Boy and His Dog by Mr Harlan Ellison.

And

DANDELION WINE by Ray Bradbury, although the town and people he created were grounded in reality.

I shall now be on my way to see a play after which I shall be gay and carefree and perhaps have some dessert, having eaten pizza for dinner.
