Well, you've read the notes, you know who loves you, baby, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently saying "Who moos you, baby."

And for those who like to be early birds, here is the blurb for the new Kritzerland release - and it's a goody.  You know the drill - go directly to paypal.com and it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping payable to kritzerland at adephia dot net.

“IT’S A WORLD OF COPS AND ROBBERS…”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition CD – the original motion picture soundtrack from Cops and Robbers, with a score by Michel Legrand.

Cops and Robbers was a well reviewed and received 1973 caper film starring Joseph Bologna and Cliff Gorman, written by the great Donald Westlake, and directed in off-handed improvisatory style by Aram Avakian.

Michel Legrand was hired to compose and conduct the score and he created a terrific and eclectic bunch of cues, some of them classic Legrand 70s funk, some pretty, some atonal and weird, and all wonderfully Legrandesque.   However, the film’s director seemed to have something else in mind; seemingly he wanted the music to mostly function as part of the sound design – as source music, as pad, as everyday life, and not really as conventional film scoring.  Save for only one or two cues, Legrand’s music always seems to be coming out of radios (the radio broadcasts seem to always be present), and the cues that might be considered score cues still almost function as source music in the film itself.  While a soundtrack album was prepared at the time of the film’s release, it never came out, probably because if people had seen the film they would have found little need to purchase it, since so little of the music is heard – sometimes only a few seconds.  But the album is fantastic, and it’s a shame the music wasn’t actually used more prominently in the film because it’s Legrand at his 70s best.  The title song is infectious in the way Shaft’s title song is (with a similar-style vocal), and each track is completely it’s own musical picture.   We’re thrilled to release what is basically an almost never-before-heard Legrand score.

Beautifully mastered for CD from the album masters, Cops and Robbers is  a must-have for any film score aficionado or Legrand fan.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship the beginning of August – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier.

I'll be ordering this, but unfortunately, I won't be able to just yet.  This month has become one of those months...financially. :-\

I would like to go the other way and change a Musical into a straight play.  Something like My Fair Lady

Actual TOD

I think that the 7 Faces of Dr. Lao would make a great musical.

However because of the logistics I don't one actor can play all the parts.

But I think that BD Wong might do a great job as Lao

As for the composer I am not sure who I choose from today's batch but based on some scores that BK produced I think that

Flaherty/Ahern based on their writing for the Lucky Stiff score

or

Cohen (?) based on his writing for the No Way To Treat A Lady score

and I think even BK can take a crack at it,

I Know It's been made into an opera but I think THE GREAT GATSBY would make a wonderful Musical.

Also one of my all time favorites(and the play is almost a great book for a musical already) Jean Anouilh's THIEVES CARNIVAL

This is it....this is my last post at HHW.  That is just the way it must be.

Yes, I have thought about it long and hard, but there is no other way.

After all of these years and after all of these posts and the many good friends I have here at HHW, I am leaving.

MR BK - I think that not including me in the people you will take to New York when TFNM travels there is wrong and unthinking.  I have supported TFNM for many years.  I have the video, I bought the cd, and I read EVERY post you wrote about.

So...there it is.

Most interesting TOD:

And to begin with I will choose:

Beau Brummell - The Ultimate Man of Style

I would write the libretto myself - and the score would be by Tim Rice & Elton John, with special material by Bruce Kimmel.

Has The Royal Family been musicalized? If not I would love to see that made musical. I'm very much looking forward to the revival this fall by MTC.

Good morning, all! I believe that William Finn has worked on a musical version of THE ROYAL FAMILY.

DR ArnoldBrockman, I too love THIEVE'S CARNIVAL. When I was in college I played one of the two Dupont-Dufours (?), and I've always thought there was a very stylish musical there with a director like Gower Champion, and maybe even a score by Jerry Herman. Today, i'm not sure about a director, but I think Mr Skip Kennon could provide a lovely score.

Today, the doctor in about 45 minutes from now. My stomach's been acting up since yesterday and I probably need to have my lungs checked from all that crap I'm inhaling at the law office.

William Finn, of all people, took a crack at this property about ten(?) years ago.

Ya know, I have the demo of it but I don't think I ever listened to it.  I might do that this morning and bring back a report.

"I Have Found," from this project, has been recorded a number of times and is quite lovely.

TOD:

Properties I always thought would make good musicals:

THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS
I LOVE LUCY
BALL OF FIRE
THE WOMEN (this has been tried a number of times, I hear)

And of course, there is...WORKIN' MIRACLES!

The one thing I've learned as a writer...good ideas are at a premium, so keep them to yourself, lest someone steal them.  Therefore, I will not be offering any ideas for converting anything into a musical.
