I really loved "Cougar Town" and "Eastwick" last night.

Both worked very well for me and my sensibilities.  Paul Gross is a wonderful Darryl Van Horne!  And how fun for Veronica Cartwright to "return" as Eastwick's favorite harbinger of doom.

Courtney Cox has another winner, I hope, with her role as a recently divorced mom determined to open her mind and date younger men.  Her son is way cool beyond his years and her ex is wonderfully funny as a ne'er-do-well to whom she pays alimony and who takes a job cutting grass at his son's school.  The kid is going to need therapy before he enters college, I'm sure.

I was able to catch the second half of COUGAR TOWN and I liked what I saw.  Extrememly funny and Courtney Cox was wonderful (I loved the little bit she did in the mirror at the very end.)  I just hope that the show's creators don't borrow too heavily from SCRUBS beyond the breakneck pace and casting Christa Miller.

EASTWICK, on the other hand, didn't do anything for me.  I don't think it's bad--but I didn't find anything remarkable enough to keep me coming back.

I think I can say that the new musical is entitled The Roxy and concerns the meeting of a young lad who wants to be a Roxy Usher in 1939 because he feels it will be the start of his realizing his dreams and finding his life, and the gangster Louis Lepke.  It's got some comedy (not enough, actually), but is equally a dramatic musical with a lot of fun stuff thrown in, i.e. numbers that take place at the Roxy, where they did stage shows - we've got real-life characters like Sophie Tucker and the Nicholas Brothers - one of the things I've done is to make sure that the Roxy numbers are never there for no reason - they always come out of or precede sequences where they comment on the action, much like the cabaret numbers in Cabaret.  They used to just sort of happen for no reason.

It's becoming a very interesting show, but there is much to do to get it right and sometimes it's hard to get the authors off things they're in love with, but they've been really good eggs about ultimately doing it.  I don't think there's anything that I've asked them to think about that they haven't thought about and then done.  The show last night was much more focused in its storytelling than the unwieldy mess they had last February, and the score is coming together, but it still needs some major work.

Ben - I did not see people standing in the back last night, although I was not specifically looking for it.  According to a post on another board, standing room is not available for preview performances, but they do expect to have it after opening night.

Thanks for the update Julie

Thanks, Julie. I am trying. It really shouldn't have to be this hard.

I'm so very sorry you have had to go through this.

I don't think I'll jog today - it's too hot out there.  Maybe later around six, when it's cooled off.  Instead, I think I'll take my Roxy script and notes over to Jerry's where I'll have some eggs or maybe a turkey sandwich, and I'll begin clarifying and making sense of the notes I took, so I can then type them up.  Then I have to go through the Cry For Us All master again - there's a couple of things that I'm not thrilled with in the EQ so we're doing a second pass.  I'm a perfectionist, you know.

Congratulations, Jose!

Thanks, DR Julie!  The Power of Twitter!  ;)

And of being a good customer too. The folks at The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck are nominated this year, and needed some extra staff to help them feed the masses.  So, since Doug knew I had had some food service background - and my own set of knives - as well as a knowledge of his product, well...

It will be a long day, but I'm sure it will be filled with fun and food (of course)!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly(?), I'm not.  There are many other "patrons" who are more qualified for that honor.  However, if they were to honor a Patron of the Year, it would have to go to Zach Brooks of the very informative Midtown Lunch blog.

At this point, the only thing I really like about the show is Jane Lynch, who I've enjoyed since her appearances on TWO AND A HALF MEN a few years ago.

She was on again for the season opener.

der Brucer

I'll have to look for that in reruns.  SHe was a great foil for Charlie Sheen.

Looking her up on IMDB, I'm amazed that she's been around for so long without finding a break-out role until now on GLEE.

She's been a cult favoite as a member of Christopher Guest's stable of whackos.

der Brucer

And I loved her as Julia Childs' sister in "Julie & Julia" too.

And, yes, she's been around for a while.  Regardless of stardom, there's something to be said for career longevity.

And for being in demand. She has guest starred on MANY shows over the last few years. She plays the mother of the genius on CRIMINAL MINDS, for example.

I did not like COUGAR TOWN. Oh, I could see it might be popular and fun, but I got tired of it long before it was over. I won't be checking back in on this one. Saves me another half hour (along with COMMUNITY that's a net of one hour of my life saved per week.)

I watched another Brett/Holmes saga: THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY. Not a great mystery, but it sure was great seeing James Purefoy in a guest star role.

I forgot to mention in the Holmes show I watched yesterday, Jude Law was the guest star, and he looked about 15.

Back from Jerry's - had bacon and eggs, and because I felt I deserved it, a piece of chocolate mousse cake.  All very yummilicious.  I got about thirty pages into the script - I'm being very detailed, questioning lots of dialogue and character stuff, asking for some radical changes at times, and really going through every song, music and lyrics-wise and asking for lots of little changes.

I watched AMERICAN FAMILY which came on prior to COUGAR TOWN last night while I ate lunch today. I thought it was wonderful. I especially liked the gay family and the family which had Ty Burell as the father. Ty was especially hilarious as the square, clueless "hip" dad in his family. Great show.

I hope you'll give "Eastwick" a chance.  The first episode had to set up a lot, including three disparate characters who didn't know they were witches and the summoning of DVH, whose mission it was to get each of them into his life.

I think things will sort themselves out.  The cast is extremely attractive, and the witches are just finding out how potent their powers are.

Then I watched my work project for today INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED. Another weird enterprise from the director, but this one did have a bittersweet edge to it. He dredged up a 1942 Serbian talkie called INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED, very melodramatic and horribly acted and directed, and between scenes in it, he showed the surviving members of the cast trying to put on a show for a new audience. Of course, intercut with these things were also various newsreels of the war thus making it, like all his films, a collage of images and impressions.

Glad to be done with the set even though I guess it's fun to see something so TOTALLY different every once in a while. Keeps one on his toes.

Since I enjoyed seeing the young James Purefoy, I put on BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS and watched about 45 minutes of it this afternoon. Since a fun comedy, and the young Kevin McKidd is also worth many looks.

And I finished the afternoon watching COUGAR TOWN which, as I said, I didn't much care for. I did think several of the men were attractive, but Crista Miller on another of her husband's shows, ugh. She looked botoxed out of her mind.

Afternoon surf is complete, so I need to hop off-line now and finish writing up my work project.

Then, it'll be back downstairs for some Blu-ray fun with the third HARRY POTTER film: PRISONER OF AZKABAN.
