Or... Maybe this selection from Tosca...

DR MBarnum - If the Puccini is too "heavy" for you, here's the Serenade from Don Giovanni.

So it costs $50 to get a membership card to Costco to be able to get inside the door?  Good luck to them in Manhattan.  They are going to need to come up with some free trial membership, I suspect.

CostCo is a phenomenon, like Sam's Club.  They needn't worry.  Folks will be knocking one another over trying to get in the door.

DR Ron and DR Jose - you may both be right.  I've been to a CostCo before, so I know what it's all about, and it's great.  My point was that this is probably a new model for them --- to open up a buy in huge quantity bulk type shopping destination, in an area where people neither own cars nor have likely (for the most part) travelled to another borough to buy their groceries.  Not only do people not have cars to get their purchases home, but they don't have the luxury of storage space to hold all these bulk items in their apartments.  So I think it will be very interesting to see if people are able to find a way to make this work for them.

I doubt that a lot of people who live outside of Manhattan and own cars will routinely drive into the City in order to be able to shop at this particular Costco, instead of the one closer to their home.  I was thinking that since this is a new thing for the people in Manhattan, and that we have an unusual set of circumstances (no car, no space at home) that most other areas of the country don't deal with, they may encounter greater resistance in getting many people to pay $50 for a membership up front, before seeing if it will actually work for them on a regular basis.  They may actually do better giving people something like a free two time pass, so people can try it out free the first couple of times and see if it works for them.

I just talked to a friend who braved the "madhouse" at the new CostCo this morning.  From what he could tell, it looked like most people already had memberships, but he said he did notice that a lot of people were also signing up.

As for cars and/or the lack thereof - he said the gypsy cabs were doing great business there.  Those town cars can hold a lot of stuff.  He also ran into a bunch of his neighbors from the UWS - who happen to have cars and storage space (almost) in their apartments and condos.  He also noticed that some of the "bulk" items were not that bulky, so I guess they're customizing their inventory according to their clientele and area.  -Which is sort of like what Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have done with their special NYC-lines of furniture which are sized just a few inches smaller than regular "home-sized" furnishings.

I just reviewed Puccini's IL TRITTICO, which I found quite beautiful.  I hadn't really had much exposure to it (other than "babbino") before.

In other late breaking news, Betsy also loves the house so we will be making an offer tomorrow.  There's evidently a lot of interest in it so I'm trying to temper my emotions about it all.

DS Betsy is of course from Wisconsin and a lot of her routine last night was about growing up there.  She does a killer Wisconsonian accent.

One of my favorite Wisconsin jokes which Betsy told me early in our courtship is that she was 25 before she realized polka bands weren't the traditional musical fare at weddings.

For anyone interested:

I stopped by the adoption bus today and met the adoption coordinator. She said Michael and Charlie got adopted right away last weekend. Ginny is going to the senior center event this weekend (since she is such a lap cat). If she doesn't get adopted there, she'll go to the pet shop where gray cats get snapped up right away.

The last batch all went to the pet shop, where they stay until they are adopted, and indeed Cillaliz, Elmore, and Antonia were adopted several weeks ago.

Kittens Wally and George will go to a special event on December 3 where all the people looking for pets make very good money.

Great news!!

But, boy, will it sell tickets!

We shall be going for the special effects & John Cusack is a bonus.

Francois did indeed write me and I take him at his word that it wasn't he who posted at B'wayworld.  I'm hoping he'll stay with us.  We've discussed his e-mail (which actually wasn't meant for me at all - which is the danger in e-mails).  So, I looked up June 19 on OUR calendar and that was ozderek's birthday (unless I misread) - since he's no longer with us (and greatly missed) I don't think it was him.  Whether it was his compatriot from Oz I don't know, although I'd find that highly doubtful.  So, my strong guess would be 3D Diffusion, since that darling girl has done similar things on other boards, always with different usernames.  She really must hang out here every single day and read the notes and the posts carefully.  Scary.  For her.

So apologies to Francois for jumping to the wrong conclusion - it was an understandable mistake because of the close proximity between the post and his e-mail.

So it costs $50 to get a membership card to Costco to be able to get inside the door?  Good luck to them in Manhattan.  They are going to need to come up with some free trial membership, I suspect.

Most CostCo's I've been to will let you in the door to browse.  If the greeter does not let you in, then s/he usually directs you to the membership desk - then you can walk around the warehouse with an application in hand.  They also used to let you buy things there without a membership, but they would charge you a 5-10% fee.  However...  I know a number of NYCers who already have a CostCo membership - they usually shop in Jersey or in Brooklyn.

I walked in last night without showing a card, which was good since I didn't have one. I think you should be able to go in, look around and then if you feel it's worth it, you join.

re: costco. There are actually plenty of things that you can buy there that aren't in bulk.

They have great deals on clothes, books, scrapbooking supplies. And even a lot of the food is not in bulk.

It will be interesting to see how it works in NYC. But it is huge here.

They have a nice wine selection, too. It's a good thing to have a membership if you're throwing a party. Makes it quite affordable.

There were only two candidates for the post at B'wayworld - 3D Diffusion and Francois.  Since Francois had written me a very similar e-mail I thought it was pretty obvious it was him.  He acted as if I'D attacked that poor fellow - I just asked him if he'd read the post to which I responded where I was called names, and where the poster just made things very personal.  I doubt I'll hear back.

Darn, I wish you had kept your emails private instead of bringing it here.  I wasn't really following the discussion regarding a board I don't read, but since you are publicly stating your suspicions as fact, I gotta say I find it very hard to believe & wish you had not been so quick to name names.  At least now you are saying there is a possibility it was someone else.

FIRST U.S. MARIJUANA CAFE OPENS IN PORTLAND

PORTLAND, Oregon —  The United States' first marijuana cafe opened on Friday, posing an early test of the Obama administration's move to relax policing of medical use of the drug.

The Cannabis Cafe in Portland, Oregon, is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it — as long as they are out of public view — despite a federal ban.

"This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members," said Madeline Martinez, Oregon's executive director of NORML, a group pushing for marijuana legalization.

"Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana," said Martinez. "We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College , based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis."

The cafe — in a two-story building which formerly housed a speak-easy and adult erotic club Rumpspankers — is technically a private club, but is open to any Oregon residents who are NORML members and hold an official medical marijuana card.

"I still run a coffee shop and events venue, just like I did before we converted it to the Cannabis Cafe, but now it will be cannabis-themed," said Eric Solomon, the owner of the cafe, who is looking forward to holding marijuana-themed weddings, film festivals and dances in the second-floor ballroom.

I bet there’s a real market for a rural venue with an Olympic Pool to host cannabis themed Bar-Mitzvahs!

Who will mourn the pasing of Rumpspankers!

Of course if people had been reading my posts, they would have known about this several weeks ago.  :)

If people quit smoking so much maybe they'd remember!
