I had a lot of help with dinner tonight. The Goldstein Girls came over while Mr. Goldstein cooked broccoli (his contribution to their family dinner).

I'm expecting a lot of very detailed meal reports.

Roasted turkey and stuffing, baked ham, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, cran-raspberry dressing, sweet corn.

It was supposed to be only mum and I, but, we ended up with six for dinner.  Still, there were leftovers. . .of the meats.

I baked pumpkin pies last night.  Five of them.  I believe there are three remaining.

I was just perusing the receipt for one of the many medications I have had to start taking as I approach decrepitude.  Had a nice laugh at this set of letters and numbers across part of the receipt:

TX:  30596   DAW:  0

Ginny, I hope the people who canceled aren't the ones bringing the pie!

No, DR Laura, I had a feeling these 2 invitees would not attend so I was not counting on them for any contribution to the meal.

Our Thanksgiving feast was delicious:

Turkey, stuffing, gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, prepared by Richard and me
Corn casserole, prepared by my sister-in-law Kathy
3 kinds of cranberry sauce, provided by my mom
Rolls, provided by my sister
Pumpkin pie, made by our friend Betty
Marie Callendar's Razzleberry Pie, baked by my mom
Coconut cake from Servati's Pastry in Cincinnati, provided by Kathy
Wines provided by Betty, Richard's brother David, and my mom

Hello! I'm back from the festivities at Toby's and Dylan's apartment, which they graciously permit DR FJL and Skip to use for entertaining friends. Skip prepared a wonderful meal: rxcellent turkey and gravy, dressing, green beans, potatoes that for want of a better word I'll call scalloped, cranberry relish, a cranberry sorbet, and three desserts: pumpkin pie, blueberry (?) pie, and I forget the other sicne I didn't have. Toby'z and Dylan's guests included - besides Skip, DR FJL and me - Milla Ilieva, Merle Louise, Tom and Joe who produced the comedy FRIENDS AND FAMILY, and a nice nice young man named Colin whom I mistakenly called Chris all evening. Blame it on my age.

Or the alcohol.

This is my Thanksgiving story, a tale that my family will never let me forget.

I love Thanksgiving.  I have very warm childhood memories of that holiday.  Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home.  My aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his family were always there.

We'd sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves, people would tell jokes.  My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller, but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the merriment...with disastrous results.

I think it was 1954.  I would have been thirteen-years-old.

Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny joke that I'd heard at school, and I told it very well.

Correction!  I didn't just tell it very well.  I told it brilliantly.  I had a captive audience.

Then, I came to the punch line...which ended with the word "f**k".

My mother, who'd had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing hysterically.

Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence.  If my mother hadn't been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.

You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say "f**k"...particularly in front of adults.

The first one to speak was my father.  Pointing at me, he started shouting at my mother, "You're the one who encourages him!  This is all your doing!"

Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused themselves and left our house.

I don't recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

Do you remember the joke??

Absolutely!

TCB, I'm so pleased you had such a nice trip and shared so much of it with us. I used to cruise and I always enjoyed the days at sea the best. Indeed, I love being at sea!

A friend told me that she just wasn't up to her usual jaunt to Minnesota to visit relatives this Thanksgiving, so she and her husband and son will be having a nontraditional holiday. As of yesterday she still wasn't sure how they would spend it. Volunteering for a charity was one idea. I'm interested to hear what they decided on.

One year on Black Friday I needed to do some grocery shopping and headed to my local grocery store, completely forgetting that I had to pass by a shopping mall. Oy!!! It was close to impossible to even pass by the mall. I need to go to Target soon, but it certainly won't be tomorrow! Best of luck to DR Ginny! She has more courage than I have!

The evening simply flew by. I happened to pass by a window and noticed it had rained. Must have been a light shower. I didn't hear anything.

I began my evening of viewing with another episode from the fourth season Blu-ray of SUPERNATURAL. This was the episode where Dean and Sam go back to an old high school they attended to check out some creepy goings-on. Good episode with some tragic flashbacks to them at the age when they attended the school.

Next I decided that I would rewatch DOCTOR DOLITTLE. I really enjoyed seeing it again, and upconverted, it proves to still be a very strong transfer. I checked, and it was done in 2000, so I wish Fox would consider a Blu-ray upgrade for this very entertaining movie. Yes, it's too long in spots and doesn't always transition smoothly from one sequence to the next, but I do love the score, and it's obvious they spent a pile of money on it ($14 million if I remember correctly).

I ended my evening watching about an hour of MIDNIGHT LACE. I made a DVD-R of a TCM showing a year or so ago, and it looks OK for a homemade disc. I'll finish it tomorrow morning.
