It's very cold here, too. I almost had to put a jacket on today.

Guess I'll write for a bit and then head back down to continue with YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. I should be able to get SILENT MOVIE watched tonight, but I likely won't get to the special features until tomorrow morning.

I just blew in from my errands - it sure is windy out there!  It's supposed to get real cold tonight, too.

My mom called while I was out to tell us that she's been given January 8 as her moving date.  Next week she and I will pick out her new carpeting and re-visit the apartment with furniture measurements.  Today is a perfect example of why she needs to be in the "Big House."  She can't walk to her mailbox in this wind - she's pretty unsteady on her feet and would blow right over.  The last couple of winters have been very isolating and depressing for her and she will be much happier where she can see people every day.

DR Ginny - It really does sound like everything is and will work out fine for your mother.  How big a property is it? How many other neighbors and residents are in her building?

The Richmond Men's Chorus rehearses in one of the activity room at one of the huge assisted living facilities.  Anytime, I've dropped by, I've always been impressed with the layout and amenities.  Heck, they even have four separate dining "experiences", including a full sit-down restaurant as well as a buffet and snack bar.

Good news from DR GINNY!

DR JMK - maybe they will put you in a taxi cab and drive you to the Texas border and dump you out - and then call Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper.

Hello from blizzard country.  It's warmed up to 5 degrees but the wind chill is still -15 degrees.  I got up pretty early and cleaned out the driveway.  I haven't gone anywhere, though.  They really don't want people to be out and about much today. All the schools are closed and many businesses are closed.  We didn't get hit as hard as Des Mones...we got a little less than 10 inches of snow.   It's a little hard to see the scope of a blizzard from my house because I'm so protected.

I just caught the tv commercial for FINIAN'S RAINBOW; very strange. I'm glad the producers committed to doing one, though, and I hope it pushes ticket sales.

Ginny, I'm so glad your mom is looking forward to her apartment. It's all so much easier when they are happy to go.

We have been blessed that both my mother and Richard's made their own decisions about moving to retirement communities and giving up their cars.

Back from all manner of errands and whatnot.  Went to the tape transfer place, had some bacon and eggs and picked up a package that contained customs forms - and guess what?  They've done it again - brand new forms consisting of FOUR pages.  You write on the first one and it's supposed to go through the other four.  Which means we can no longer stamp our name and address on what used to be a one-page form.  I've been screaming at people for the last thirty minutes.  First of all, I called the USPS and they STILL say that we don't have to put ANY customs form on ANY package under sixteen ounces.  So I called the local post office and told them who I talked to and what they said and this cretin tells me that the USPS supervisors don't know what's going on, and that the computer is telling them we must use the forms.  I told him to get in the ring with his own people and duke it out because I now had a person's name (a supervisor) and instructions NOT to do so.  He actually threatened that the packages would all be returned.  Now, I have never had an overseas package returned to me, so I don't know that I believe him.  Then he told me we could continue using the one-page forms until they themselves run out of them and stop giving them to us - as a matter of fact, they haven't even received the new version yet.  Someone could launch a class action lawsuit and win easily - maybe that should be me.

DR Jose - my mom's new apartment is bigger than any of the ones Richard and I have rented in NYC.  She's "opting out" of the dining plan and will continue to provide her own meals.  Her exact words were, "If I had to eat every meal in that dining room I'd gag."

DR Ginny, my sister in law's father has just made the same decision, at least for part of the the year. He'll be in an independent living apartment in my home town for the winter months then go back to his house in the summer...unless he decides to stay.   He also made the decision to do it.
It's a big relief for my sil, too.

Hope your mother enjoys it.  There are some really good assisted and independent living places now days

We are convinced that Richard's mother's move extended her life significantly.

DR Cillaliz - your sister-in-law should be pleased.  My mother's move is just from a patio home to an apartment in the complex where she's lived for 10 years now.  She knows a lot of people who already live in the building, so the move will be very smooth.

I love It's A Wonderful Life.  They show it free here at the Orpheum every year.  I've never gone to see it on the big screen. I do watch it on TV every year.  I don't find it depressing, I love the idea of how we all set a chain of events in motion and how the world would truly be different if each of us hadn't been born.

It's great that she already knows people in the building.  I would think that not knowing anyone would be a lot scarier and a lot more difficult

I am looking at a beautiful cardinal on my bird feeder.  The bright red against the bright white of the snow is stunning.   I'd take a photo, but he just flew away
