Semi-random question:

Is "Song of Norway", the movie, available (again) on DVD?

*Although, as my friend, Eric, pointed out, maybe Pauline Kael's original review may have fated its current unavailability:

"Self-parody is built into operettas and is part of their innocent, campy charm. But this one isn't authentic kitsch of the Wiener-schnitzel variety, it isn't a dated crowd-pleaser squeezed for the remaining box-office juice; it's second-generation kitsch--an imitation operetta, on the joys and tribulations of Edvard Grieg's life, that combines the worst of THE SOUND OF MUSIC with the worst of A SONG TO REMEMBER and SONG WITHOUT END. Even if you're prepared for dirndls and roguish smiles you're not likely to be ready for the distorted sound, the pasty, pudgy faces, and the bewildering use of dance as if it were mood music. (When the picture isn't showing you waterfalls, flaxen-haired dancers go leaping by--a few frames at a time--to maintain a frolicsome Norwegian mood.) The movie is of an unbelievable badness; it brings back clichés you didn't know you knew--they're practically from the unconscious of moviegoers. You can't get angry at something this stupefying; it seems to have been made by trolls."

These are some of its many endearing qualities, along with the unneccesary '70's zooms and weird direction on the musical numbers. I DO have it on VHS!

DR edisaurus - Welcome back home. -And I'm sorry you didn't have any time to sit in one of the rocking chairs in CLT's main terminal.  It's one of the few airports I actually like flying through. It's not too big, not too small.  They have a decent food court - good BBQ, and there's free Wi-Fi to go with those rocking chairs.

The travel vibes worked as far as being a safe trip; and judging from the horror stories, it certainly could have been worse! So thanks for the ~~~~VIBES~~~~!!!!! Now if I can keep from getting sick....

Now, I must finish up my writing here (won't post until I get home tonight in case I want to make some last minute changes which may come to me after I stewed about the movie for a few more hours). Then, I'll head down to finish getting ready for my Christmas dinner party/gift exchange. It should be a fun evening, and we'll likely watch a seasonal movie after dinner: probably HOLIDAY INN, but I'm pushing for MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL.

Greetings from Toyland!

Why is it when you're next in line for an automated teller, the post office, a box office, a bank clerk, an automated postasge machine, a Verizon payment terminal, the person in front of you has never had any experience with said object and takes too damnerd long to accomplish a simple transaction? Why isn't there a window with a clerk at every one of these said situations with a posted sign that says "Are you retarded? A dumbass? Recently in a coma? Terminally stupid? I can help you." That's what I want to know!

If I'm in a rush, and I'm stuck behind "that person", I just go up and "help" them.  That makes the process go faster for them, and, most importantly, for myself. ;)

I've been really stressed out lately.  I'm hoping getting out of town will be good for me and I won't be more stressed because I'm not here doing what needs to be done, lol

DR Cillaliz - I'm actually starting to feel a bit of the holiday stress myself. Most of it centers around trying to get some major cleaning and organizing accomplished before 2010 rolls in. I've actually made some progress over the past few weeks, but, of course, the more I get done, the more I'd like to get done.  I'm also not looking forward to traveling down to Richmond tomorrow - I'm sensing tomorrow will be quite frenetic, and I am thinking of just heading down to Virginia next Monday for the week.  We shall see... After some phone calls, of course.

Confection Day continues here - one batch of caramel corn is finished and packaged into 12oz. gift bags to be distributed after the Christmas Eve service in Lima.  We need to make at least 2 more batches to have enough, so that's next on the list.  I've also made shortbread cut-outs that are packed away ready for icing and a batch of gingerbread dough is chilling for cutting and baking tomorrow.  This is a new recipe, so we'll see how the guys turn out.

Time to make the doughnuts pop some more popcorn!

I'm sure we've seen this before, but it calls to mind that Simpsons episode where the beauty queens paraded and sang "We learned the truth at 17, that love was meant for beauty queens"

A gorgeous beauty queen singing "And I am telling you I'm not going" - we've seen it before, I think, but this time, it needs to be seen again for the gorgeous festive dress

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soLqF71fH5U

I remember watching that year's pageant, that segment at a theatre party!  Thankfully, they were running the VCR at the same time, so, after the winner was declared, we were able to rewind the tape and watch that clip again. And again. And again.

*Something tells me that Miss Arkansas only knew that song from "Star Search" and had not seen Dreamgirls. ::)

Well... Time for me to get ready for my evening. One of the associate conductors at The Met offered me a ticket tonight's performance of Elektra; and even though I'm pretty sure I'll have the same reaction as DR the vixter had after she attended the final dress rehearsal, I'm still looking forward to a bit of Christmas week operatic bloodshed.

I wonder if Wing ever recorded O Holy Night?

Alas, Wing's Christmas album does not include "O Holy Night"...           :(

Such a shame.

My young buddy and I went to IKEA, the zoo, then to Sugar Bowl for ice cream. It began raining when we were at the zoo.

Former dear reader Hisaka stopped by for a brief holiday visit, then I went and picked up - nothing.  Really annoying.  I did check one trackable package that's coming via Fed Ex - that one is supposedly "out on the truck for delivery" but I'm pretty sure they've already been, which means it won't get there today.  Calling won't matter, because they'll use their standard "they have till six o'clock" line - it probably won't arrive by then, and then they change THAT tune and tell you sorry it will be the next day.  If they'd just acknowledge screwups then trucks could be contacted and packages would be delivered.  But no, for their outrageous rates why should they provide top-notch service.

If you're a fan of the Planet Of the Apes series and have a Blu and Ray player, can't beat the amazon Gold Box deal on this $130 set - it's less than fifty bucks right now - until they're all claimed.

I've typed up all the notes I've been taking for my new book - and came up with a bunch more while I was typing.  And I really have a lot more I need to do before beginning, so I'll be doing them over the next few days.

Well, DD Zach has proven himself to be as crafty as a child.

He just walked into the room, proudly displaying one of his new Christmas toys, which I had carefully hidden away for Friday.
