You want to hear a joyful noise, come to my church. It is both joyful and noisy.

I have been watching the Universal Sci Fi Collections, followed by WHAT'S UP DOC?, and now LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME.  I am my own tv programmer!

It certainly got cloudy and colder as the day progressed here. Wonder if I'll have to take a walk in the rain tomorrow morning?

And as for tomorrow...

It looks like the nieces/nephew/grandkids won't be coming down from Fairfax until Saturday, so...  I should be able to sleep in - and finish wrapping their presents. ;)

Then tomorrow afternoon, I'll be spending a few hours with Steve's family.  We're all gathering at his father's house.  It will be his first Christmas without his wife, Dora (Steve's mother). I'm sure that after we all get a good cry or two out of the way, we'll be feasting on Papa Austin's famous smoked turkey breast and other Austin family favorites.

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME was Percy Faith's only Oscar nomination.  You managed to get 2 of my 3 obsessions mentioned tonight.  Anyone for a Sergio Mendes anecdote?  ;)

I began my evening with GIVE A GIRL A BREAK from the Warner Archive. It looks quite a bit better than I LOVE MELVIN with much better color and sharpness and without interlaced artifacts everywhere. Sure, there's dirt and debris (of different colors), and those bothersome blue flashes which seemed to affect all MGM Technicolor movies in 1952-53 years. Glad to have it. Now if EVERYTHING I HAVE IS YOURS would come out, I could get rid of the laserdisc that has both of them in the set.

My filmmaking partner, Peter, just sent me a set of cast iron skillets. Now I need to learn about how to "season" them. Apparently, these are something people who cook find essential which probably explains why I don't have any.

They also look nice when hung on the wall.

Next I watched A COLBERT CHRISTMAS, that silly CHristmas special Stephen Colbert did last year. I reviewed it then and pulled it off the shelf to rewatch tonight. Looks really wonderful with bright, rich color. I enjoyed seeing it again.

I finished my evening watching STAR! Since I've had Gertrude Lawrence and LADY IN THE DARK on my mind a lot while reading that book over the course of the last week, I wanted to watch this again. Didn't quite have enough time to see the whole thing, but I got Gertie married to Richard Aldrich before I had to close up shop.

Thank You for all the Birthday Wishes for my niece, Alexandra.  I will be sure to pass them on to her when she arrives Saturday morning.

*And thanks for the congratulations on my Twitter wins.  Even I'm sort of surprised at how many things I've won over the past few weeks.  There's a big computer giveaway on Saturday, and if I win that, well... I'm definitely going to buy a bunch of lottery tickets next week.  Or maybe not. ;)

I went to Mass this afternoon and had to say "Peace be with you" and shake hands with a woman who was coughing into her hand all through the service.  I'm glad I keep sanitized wipes in the glove compartment of my car...

Well, I learned the CD of "E Y Harburg Revisited" was titled "Hold Onto Your Hats," which may be why I never bothered picking it up. If any DR has the CD, please let me know.

And speaking of "Yip" Harburg, this week's "Connections" column by Edward Rothstein in the New York Times...

...We stay as far away from Times Square as possible (it may be fun for the first time but it's a MADHOUSE and once is enough).

I feel the same way about making snow angels.  It's fun the first time, but too cold and wet to make it a habit.

Thank you to DR Cillaliz for the beautiful snow angel she shared with us this morning.  I hope there was a big cup of hot chocolate waiting for you inside!

Lots of things are fun the first time. I hope Times Square will be one of them!

I've always thought it would be fun to be there once.   Have a great time Edi!

I stopped very briefly ( and I mean very briefly) at a friend's Chrustmas Eve open house.  He did it up right, with the candle lit paper bags lining his walkway to the house.  His wife also made these delicious peanut butter and chocolate sandwich cookies.  I stuffed a handful into my pocket and ran.

Merry Christmas.  My brother went out and checked the road going to his house and called us to say we should stay put.  So I broiled some salmon, baked some sweet potatoes, steamed some broccoli and we had a nice dinner.

Yummmm... save me a bite...

Would love to!

I am wrapping a few more gifts and drinking some very fine scotch--always a chancy combination of activities. But I am merry!

DR edisaurus - Just remember, people start gathering in Times Square in the morning - as soon as the police finish setting up the blockades.  -And once you're "in", you are in.  They do set up porta-potties, but there's also that system where people form a circle around someone while they do their business on top of a subway grate.  Otherwise...

Also remember, that around 12:30am (on January 1, 2010), the NYPD will only let people who can show proof that they either live in Times Square or are staying in a Times Square hotel through Times Square.  Otherwise, 8th and 6th Avenues will be your friend.  They close it off so that the sanitation department can do their magic(!), and have everything cleaned up by 7:00am. -That ALWAYS amazes me.

Otherwise, wear comfortable shoes and some good layers of clothing.  It really is quite the experience.  I almost did it again last year - I braved the crowds back in 1991 - but opted to attend a party at a friend's apartment over on 10th Ave. with a great view of the revelers.

I noticed they had pumps of hand sanitizer set up on both sides of the altar for the lay people who gave out communion.

Internet seems pretty quiet (more activity here than I was expecting).

Hope everyone enjoys their evenings. I'm heading downstairs to bed now.

Good night and Happy Holidays!

Jose, when you say "subway grate," where does said "business" drip? On the subway tracks, or on the people underground, or where?
