I watched the season one finale of THE MENTALIST this morning before I started fixing lunch. It was another encounter with Red John for Patrick and company, and a most excellent way to end the first season.

DR TCB, i also wonder if it would help to get the card. One would think it should. But wouldn't the screeners know?

I think i would get one.

Channel 13 is showing a wonderful new film version of LA BOHEME with Anna Nebtrebko at the moment. It's a really beautiful production.

Someone reviewed this quite some time ago.  Of course it was harder to plagiarize this review since MattH hadn't already reviewed it.

On December 1, in fact, and it was about as thorough as mine was!

I went back to disc two and rewatched another episode (the one with the two girls fighting over the same guy; one of them ends up dead and the other missing) while I ate lunch.

And can I say how much I love having SO much turkey to do these lunches with. I've still got almost half a turkey breast after eating on it for three days.

Then I watched 8 1/2 on Blu-ray. The image is pretty astonishing with only one black scratch and one small transition where things went a little weird image-wise. I hadn't watched my DVD in quite some time, but this will definitely take its place.

I listened to 45 minutes of the commentary which is actually pieced together from three different sources. Funny that I had never bothered to listen to this on DVD. It's a really fascinating addition to the film and is well worth any fan's time to rewatch the film with this turned on.

When I go back down, I'll watch REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and maybe have time for A STUDY IN TERROR, the Sherlock Holmes film made in 1965 that I've only previously seen once. Can't wait to see it again.

Very little snow in Manhattan. The rain did it's work. It's in the high 40s and beautiful!

DR Jane asked for some close-ups.  After I realized that she meant close-ups of under my tree and not of me, I snapped a few...

And here's the Nativity Scene.  The cardboard barn and figurines are older than I am, probably going back to 1950 or so...

Of course, Garfield, Yoda, E.T. and others are not older than I am--things get added as the years go on...

I wrote the Warner Archive folks last night about that defective copy of THE SHOW OF SHOWS which left out half of the movie. I got a nice note back this afternoon from them telling me that a new copy was in the mail (they gave me the shipping number). They didn't even ask that the defective copy be sent back to them!

Very nice customer service!

Now I guess I'll hop off-line and get some writing done. Then, I'll head back down to put away the already folded laundry, clean the guest bathroom, and then have some leisure viewing for this evening.

This morning I was expecting another visit by my sister and nephew and a trip to the mall to exchange a jacket he had gotten, but those plans were dropped and I found myself with a day in which I had to do absolutely nothing.  It's been very, very nice to just laze around for a change...

Now, regarding Cillaliz's snow adventures, I am confused. Your neighbors cleared your driveway while you were away, and you cleared your front door today. But how did you get into your house when you first got home?

Great car vibes coming your way. I just finished sending in the last payment on mine a couple of days ago. Great feeling.
Am finally catching up with "Pushing Daisies" on DVD. Am into the third episode. Charming show, but I can see why it didn't last. It's like one of those daffy British series, where only a few episodes were made while the inspiration and magic lasted.
Dan (the Man), great Nativity and Christmas tree scenes.

BK, another incentive to buy a new car this week would be to take advantage of the sales tax deduction.  Here is some info that my Toyota dealership sent to me:
Quote
CONSUMER AUTO INCENTIVE INCLUDED IN FINAL STIMULUS BILL
(H.R. 1) AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT OF 2009

The President signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on February 17th, 2009. New car buyers are permitted to deduct sales/excise tax from their yearly income tax bill for vehicles purchased before the end of this year.

What Taxes are Deductible? 1
·                     State Motor Vehicle Sales
·                      Local Motor Vehicle Sales
·                      Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes

What Customers Qualify for the Deduction?
·                     Individual customers with modified adjusted gross income of less than $125,000 or joint-filers making less than $250,000 a year in 2009 would qualify for the deduction.
·                     Deductible as an above the line (for itemizers and non-itemizers) deduction on federal tax return.

Effective Date
·                     New vehicle purchases shall apply to purchases on or after the date of enactment.
·                     February 17, 2009 until Dec. 31st, 2009.

What New Vehicles Qualify for the Deduction?
·                      Any New vehicle under 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight.
·                     New vehicles of any model year when the original use commences with the taxpayer.
·                     Any vehicle sold for under $49,500 qualifies for the full deduction. Consumers may deduct sales taxes on the first $49,500 of any vehicle sold above this price.

THIS IS A GENERALIZED SUMMARY. For more specific information on eligibility, taxes and applicability, new car buyers are encouraged to consult with a qualified tax attorney or professional.
1 For purposes of this section, the term qualified motor vehicle taxes means any state or local sales or excise tax imposed on the purchase of a qualified motor vehicle.- (Text of H.R. 1)

jennifer it is very common here to have attached garages with an entrance to the kitchen or laundry room.  my two houses in southern california did not have a door from the garage to the house. i never thought much about it there with the mild winters.  two of our homes on the east were the same.  after the two houses on the east coast i hope never to have a garage without an entrance to the house again.

After-Christmas tip #109:  If you received any multiple-disc cd or dvd set as a gift, open them now to make sure all the discs are included while faulty sets can still be returned.

I keep missing the beginning of this LA BOHEME everytime my local PBS station shows it.  I need to have Tivo look for it this week.

I do keep running into THE NUTCRACKER that PBS has been running incessantly.  But after THE HARD NUT, it hardly compares...

If THE NUTCRACKER is the one from San Francisco Ballet, it's pretty good. It used to be all that PBS showed was the Baryshnikov version from American Ballet Theatre. Of all the versions I've seen, I think Balanchine is the best with the chldren. I dislike Mark Morris' HARD NUT intensely, because I think Mark Morris is a true example of no there there. Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE is Mark Morris with talent.
