Topic of the Day: my best (and actually, only) new car experience was 11 years ago, just like BK. My previous car, a 1989 Subaru Justy had died a slow and painful (financially, to me) death. I had to get a new car and one day, my sister and I were driving around to different car dealerships. We went to a local Ford dealership and they were having a deal...only 0.9% interest and no down payment! We looked at several different cars (and I got to sit in the fairly new New Volkswagen Beetle...my very first car was a 1976 SuperBeetle), but I ended up only test driving the Ford Escort. It was quite nice. I said that I would have to think about it and talk to my financial adviser (my mom) and she came back with me the next day. We told them that I had a Costco card (which I did) and the deal with Costco was that there was no price haggling, you just play $100 over the invoice price. That, plus the 0.9% interest deal AND the no down payment deal sealed it! I filled out the forms and financed through Ford Credit and drove my new car off the lot. They did take my Justy in trade, but they only gave me $200 for it. But then, $200 is $200.

I still have my Escort. I've been fairly diligent about getting it serviced on a regular basis, except that this year I bought a new computer. I should've waited on the computer and had the car serviced, so that'll be the first thing that I do with my income tax refund next year. I hope to have this car for several more years...hopefully.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I've never had a new car experience. Living in New York City for the past 29 and a half years has meant I don't need (or want) a car and I don't think, in my entire childhood, that we ever had a "new" car.

TOD: In 1998, We went through the fleet division via the internet, got a price, walked into the dealership, and declined most of the options and the opportunity to test drive. When asked to look at different cars, we said "how about the one parked right there?" and signed papers, wrote a check, and drove home. It was quick and as painless as possible.

My DH needs a new vehicle now, but it's that "write a check" part that's stopping us.

Congrats and kitty-replenishing vibes on the new car. My best new car experience was back in the 80s when I bought an Escort painted (bless car color namers) "Midnight Canyon Red." I didn't know how to drive a standard. The man who sold it to me told me he was going to teach me how to drive it. I thought he was going to turn gray by the end of that little mishap. He told me to take it out in the country, which I did, and I remember backing down a hill because I hadn't figured out how to handle those properly. Still, that was a great car and lasted many miles.
By the way, I bought that in Dr. Elmore's hometown of Middletown, Ohio.

Re: you mentioning last night that the neighbors parked on the street (in your spots).

You said you have a garage. But do you have a driveway too? Could you park your car there. For some reason even though we have snow here. Most people use their garages to store tools and stuff. But they park their cars on their driveways.

Good morning, all! I guess the neighbor above me has guests this week; around 2 am this morning there was a repeat of theactivity the day before: loud talking - 3 voices, 2 men and a woman - and a lot of heavy walking around for a bit before things settled down. It really screws up my sleeping cycle and it took me forever to get back to sleep. I am not amused at the moment and I'm debating how to approach my neighbor.

I have a bit of work here today, as well as a trip to the NYPL. Around 4:30 my friend Val and i will meet up for a movie. I can pick up the tickets on my way to NYPL. Our choices are the new George Clooney film and the one about Young Queen Victoria. I need to call her and give her movie times so we can make a decision.

Another new car purchaser in 1998 here! Mine was hunter green Toyota Camry that I fell in love with on first sight (it was, afterall, Valentine's Day.) What I really loved about the new car purchase experience was the royal treatment I continued to receive from yhe dealership--a can of chocolate chip cookies and baloons were delivered to me at work, they always fit me in for the service appointments I desired and sent lots of coupons and discounts for their servicing. If or when I do need another new vehicle, I will go back to this particular dealership.

However, my Camry continues to drive like a dream and seems to require only quarterly maintenance trips. As much as I would have liked to have taken advantage of the incredible car deals this year, I just couldn't justify getting rid of this car yet.

bk, Sissy Spacek WAS nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for CARRIE. It was her first nomination. She lost to Faye Dunaway in NETWORK, but she was nominated. So was Piper Laurie who lost to Beatrice Straight in NETWORK.

BTW, Sissy did win the National Society of Film Critics Best Actress award for CARRIE.

Buying my current car, the 2005 Saturn, was undoubtedly my best buying experience. I loved the no-pressure approach at Saturn, and the car has been a dream. Other than the dead battery a year ago February, I have had no problems with it at all.

Best new car buying experience - my current 2004 PT Cruiser, which I purchased in January 2005. The price was exactly right, and my old 1994 Pontiac Grand Am went to my sister.....who sold it to my nephew when she moved to Seattle......who promptly wrecked it.....but he doesn't know how it happened....

I can also tell you what my WORST new car experience was. I bought a beautiful white Plymouth, oh, I'd say maybe in 1989 or so. The dealership filled it up with gas, and my partner and I at the time headed home, stopping off at the grocery store en route. When we came out of the grocery store, we smelled the unmistakable smell of gasoline, but I assumed it was from some other car in the lot. When I cranked up the car, I noticed that my gas tank was sitting on 1/3 full. I had heard of BAD gas mileage, but this was the pits! I drove RIGHT BACK to the dealership, and lo and behold, there was no top on the gas tank! It had been left off at the factory and hadn't been discovered since they never kept more than a gallon or so of gas it in at one time. Unbelievable.

And that car ended up being a lemon with tons of problems happening with it within a year or so of purchase. I think I kept that car the least of any car I've ever owned.
