TOD:

I've never been much of a fan of either Tony Curtis or Dean Martin.

However, with regard to Curtis, I do like SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS and SOME LIKE IT HOT, and the sequence in THE GREAT IMPOSTER where he over medicates Edmond O'Brien is a classic.

About a year ago, I recorded and tried to watch Curtis and Martin in WHO WAS THAT LADY? but I couldn't get past the first ten minutes and gave up on it.  I've since been told that it gets much better so I've been looking for another TCM showing.

I recall seeing Sterling Holloway star in a stage production of WHO WAS THAT LADY? at Seattle's Cirque Playhouse back in the late 1950s.

That production was much funnier than the movie, probably because Sterling never stuck to the script.

Good morning!

It's going to be a gorgeous day here with temps inching into the 60s. I'm loving this weather.  My heating bill is also loving it.

Dean Martin:

SOME CAME RUNNING
ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS

I wish I could add BELLS ARE RINGING. He's absolutely perfectly cast, and his voice is just wonderful in the singing. But in the actual film, he's BARELY trying at all. In the "I Met a Girl" number, he doesn't even bother to open his mouth to lip-synch during the playback. (He actually appears to be drunk while fighting his way through those crowds.)

I know there are a lot of Jerry Lewis fans on the site, but Martin is the only reason I can make it through the Martin & Lewis comedies now. I just find Jerry so oppressively "on" all the time, and I lose patience with his characters within ten minutes of his first appearance in those movies.

Today I'm starting of the Roberto Rossellini WAR TRILOGY from Criterion, and the first one up is the most famous: ROME OPEN CITY which I haven't seen in over 30 years. I remember very little about it, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again. The three films are on separate discs and are all loaded with bonus features, so I'll be doing one disc a day to work my way through everything.

TV Note:

WHITE COLLAR returns tonight with new episodes at 10 p.m. on USA. This is not a one-time move to Tuesdays but appears to be permanent (at least for the rest of its first season). Of course, if the ratings tank, I guess USA may move it back to Friday, but we will have to wait and see about that.

Note to DR JRand:

SOUTHLAND airs its second episode tonight on TNT at 10.

Most of the rest of the evening's programming is reruns apart from reality shows like IDOL and THE BIGGEST LOSER.

ABC also has new episodes of SCRUBS and BETTER OFF TED at 9 and 9:30.

Those who might want to try out Fox's new HUMAN TARGET show with Mark Valley will find the pilot being repeated tonight at 9 on Fox. A new episode airs tomorrow night in its regular spot at 9 on Fox.

I noticed that Steven Suskin's SHOW TUNES has a new edition coming out next month. I've never owned any of the other editions of the book. Is it worth getting? On the surface it sounds like an indispensible book for lovers of musicals, but until the write-up at Playbill, I had never heard about it.

So, opinions anyone? I'm sure some of you must have one of the previous editions.

I like it, though I must admit I don't really turn to it that often.

DR MattH - I have copies of the two previous editions.  As much as I appreciate the annotated index of shows and show tunes, what I find most valuable are the essays and the brief bio/profiles of the composers.

And since I just played an event for it... If you don't already "collect" them, are you interested in the latest edition of "Theatre World"?  In general, the pictures(!) in "Theatre World" are more than worth the price of the tome.

I don't know that CAREER totally works, but it's eminently watchable and probably resonates with anyone in show business.  Yes, great final line.  Based on a play.

Re: THE VIKINGS

Curtis' first scene was cut from the movie after its initial release, and (apparently) that's the only version of the movie that still exists.

I recall seeing the movie first run at the Coliseum Theater in Seattle.  In that screening, there definitely was an initial scene between Curtis and Kirk Douglas that was missing when I saw it later on TV and the scene did not reappear when the movie went to home video.

If you look at the movie as it now stands, the first time that Douglas encounters Curtis, Kirk's opening line is "You again!"

Obviously, something has been cut.

Druxy, I have the film; haven't seen it for awhile (I actually have three different posters of this movie on the wall of my TV room...a Polish, Italian, and American).  My recollection is that Tony is a slave who has been secretly training a hawk.  When his hawk snatches prey from Douglas' hawk, Douglas tries to take tony's Hawk.  Tony has the hawk attack and it takes Douglas' eye out.
