thanks jrand.  i rested for a bit & then managed my exercises without any problems, unless sherlock bouncing around to entice me to play with him is a problem.;)  he was so cute i had to break and play with him.  next round of exercises i'll repeat the ones i did & add a series of more difficult, and more painful ones.  they are satisfying though as they are one step closer to my using my arm.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings this afternoon.

Reporting the death of Erich Segal means never having to say you're sorry.

Some passings of note from the past week or so...

Teddy Pendergrass

George Jellinek

Kate McGarrigle

Robert B. Parker

Erich Segal

I'm especially sad to hear about Kate and Teddy...they made some great music

I totally forgot about THE VIKINGS for Tony Curtis. Add another item to my list of favorite films of his.

Congratulations to DR Elmore for having his letter to the editor published in this week's ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

And I couldn't agree with you more! Thanks for writing!

Congrats, Larry!  Which issue is it in?  Our library subscribes to Entertainment Weekly. :)

AVATAR is on the cover.

Lunch started late and ran long. Consequently, I didn't get anything watched before I headed out. This made me very frustrated.

When I got in, I immediately watched ROME OPEN CITY. This is often stated as being one of the first of the neorealist Italian films, but apart from some street scenes with children and the occupying German soldiers, this is mostly a studio-bound film shot with professional actors.

It's very good, but I still find neorealist films like De Sica's SHOESHINE and BICYCLES THIEVES much truer to the neorealist style and genuinely moving with their amateurs in the leading roles. And Magnani is really missed once she's gone after the first half of the movie.

I started listening to the very excellent commentary (done for the laserdisc in 1995), but only got about 20 minutes in. This is one I'd like to hear all the way through.

I haven't had a chance to watch today's soaps or last night's CASTLE yet, and I still have all of the bonuses on the disc after the commentary, so I still have much work to do today on OPEN CITY.

In happier news...

I was very happy to learn that the lovely and talented - and Tony Nominee - Celia Keenan-Bolger - was recently engaged to John Ellison Conlee.

And HHW favorite, Donna Lynn Champlin, has also been recently engaged.  -Or however I'm supposed to state that.

:)

So, will Celia become Celia Conlee-Keenan-Bolger? or Celia Keenan-Bolger-Conlee? or maybe Celia Keenan-Bolger-Ellison-Conlee?? :D

I must now hop off-line and get some writing done. Then it's back down to finish the bonus features on OPEN CITY.

Topic of the Day:

Tony Curtis movies:
The Great Race
Operation Petticoat
The Rat Race
Some Like It Hot
Sweet Smell of Success

Dean Martin movies:
Airport
Bells Are Ringing

I know that I've seen some Martin and Lewis films, I haven't seen one since I was very young and can't remember what they are.

Thanks for the report, DR JANE!

Today I bought the 6 CD set of the Shostakovich String Quartets by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet.

Very nice....and of course the Goodwill price $1.99 for the set was very nice too.

Packages are done, and Cason's just finishing the postage.  I shall then go do some errands and whatnot and then eat, then return and finally get down to writing.  Luckily, I did about three or four pages before Cason got here - but those were all additions, so I haven't actually progressed from where I was yesterday - but I shall.

We turned in the keys to Mom's former home this afternoon and you could just see the relief on her face.  She still has a lot to unpack, but she's glad to have the move behind her.

Well.....watching all of these movies today, I have to say that Boris Sagal directed Elvis in what is a much better movie than I remembered it to be....GIRL HAPPY.

This is Elvis' first outing with Shelley Fabares, and it includes Nita Talbot, Gary Crosby, Jimmy Hawkins, and Mary Ann Mobley among others.  There are the usual misunderstandings, fights, and songs....but everybody is having a good time, and the songs are among the better ones in the mid-60's Elvis movie library.

Fabares even gets into the act dancing Ann-Margret like to "Meanest Girl in Town" (I don't think A-M would lose any sleep over the routine).

Nice job, everybody, and kind of a rediscovery for me GIRL HAPPY.....I know I saw it at the drive in!
