I knew Shel Slverstein and he was a very interesting man. He had a great sense of humor, but his "Ballad of Lucy Jordan" is one of the most unsettling songs I know. It's the story of my mother and her madness.

I'm not only emotionally down but i'm feeling crappy; I can't figure out if it's allergies or I'm coning down with something and i hate that. Luckily, I have work and that keeps my mind off my troubles and my impulse from getting on the phone and raging at a friend. So, back to work.

Please No raging at friends!!  I find raging to the person in my head as a walk really helps.  The rage gets it out of my system & the walk releases those good endorphins.

Do you mean the ballad is based on your mother or it coincidentally captures her?

Your Allergies remind me of a favorite James Thurber Quote

" I used to wake up at 4AM and start sneezing sometimes for five hours.I tried to find out what sort of allergy I had but finally came to the conclusion that it must be an allergy to consciousness"

Other Favorite Thurber Quatations:

"All human beings should try to learn before they die what they are running from and to,and why"

"I hate Women because they always know where things are"

"He knows all about Art,but he doesn't know what he likes"

"Well,If I called the wrong number why did you answer the phone?"

"It's better to know some of the questions than all of the answers"

"A Woman's place is in the wrong"

"He who hesitates is sometimes saved"

I Hope,Larry That I cheered you up a little

Did a two-mile jog and have about twenty-five more packages to address - helper should be arriving soon to do the postage stuff.

I just remembered one of my fave cartoons, by "black humor" guy Gahan Wilson.  It's hard to describe, but:  there's a homeless man in an alley who has opened up a garbage can into which a corpse has been stuffed.  The corpse's mangled hand is pointing up to the sky and the homeless guy is looking up to see what is being pointed at.  :)

Had a LOOOONG phone conversation with a Qwest tech guy in Boise who admitted this was all a Qwest "socket" issue that is affecting all of 4-5 homes (including mine, of course).  He did take the time to talk me through how to get this damnable modem to work with the kids' XBox 360.  There are, to use their parlance, "known connectivity issues."  Oy.

DR Cillaliz last night you mentioned that you read a lot of books and you often don't know the authors names.

I think it's different if you take books out from the library. At least for me it is. Because to look up a book online i need to type in the author's name. If i want to borrow or suggest a book I have to write out the author's name and the book title. So it makes me remember all the author's names.

I can look books up by the title which is usually faster than by the author.

I can also look books up by the title. But I find it faster by the author. Since many books have similar names. And in our syster if you type in a book title they often give you many other choices.

But we still reserve books manually. So you have to know the name of the author.

DR Jane, you might find it funny to know that when i went back to the library this week your favorite book (not!) was still sitting on the front shelf for someone to borrow.

I guess nobody wanted it.

I do find that funny.  There were a good number of people in my book group who did not want to read the book.  Our books are picked by the hostess & she wasn't at the last meeting to hear the comments-lol.

Well when it's sitting out there people can skim through the books. And I guess nobody thought it sounded good enough to read.

I can only describe my favorite New Yorker cartoon.....

A well dressed couple are being let inside the front door of a lovely home by the lady of the house.....approaching them on his hind legs with his right paw extended and a big smile on his face is a dog.  The lady of the house is saying:

"Just ignore him.  Ever since he learned to shake hands, he's been insufferable."

Miss Callie has been returned to the Humane Society.

Any story you imagine is probably the reason.

I just read the lyrics.  I can imagine how you feel reading them, kind of how I felt reading Prince of Tides after my brother told me I must read it.
