Happy B'day, TCB.

My problem with the review is the last line which states you lost more than you won...which pretty much shows how little people understand Hollywood or the business in general.  I would say you won more than you lost...most actors in Hollywood would envy your career.  And it was a long career by Hollywood standards.

TOD:

Films:

I love The Thin Man films

Books:

Philip Marlowe by Raymond Chandler
Philo Vance by S.S. Van Dine
Elvis Cole by Robert Crais
Ed and Am Hunter by Fredric Brown
Harry Stoner by Jonathan Valin (Cincinnati detective)

Gordianus the Finder by Steven Saylor (Ancient Rome)
Paul Pine by Howard Browne
Nicholas Bracewell by Edward Marston (Elizabethan theatre settings)
Toby Peters by Stuart Kaminsky (Hollywood in the forties)

Last night I had the weirdest dream about the late John McGlinn In this dream he was locked up in a hospital and behaving crazily (so far, nothing new). Something occurred concerning his treatment, involving a book by some psychotherapist, that could have saved McGlinn, and I suppressed it. This deception led to his release from hospital to someone's home, where he fell down a flight of stairs and was seriously injured. No one was sure he would survive it, but the suppressed book resurfaced and I was left with the  qiestion of killing him to protect my deception. I'm clearly carrying some guilt over this man!

Since were posting reviews today, I want to thank (and share) BK's blurb for my memoir, which appears on the back cover:

“Michael Druxman’s new book is like taking a time machine back
to those thrilling days of yesteryear, a time when there was a real Hollywood with real
movie stars and the kind of class that no longer exists in that place they call Hollywood
today. The tales of his days as a ‘publicist for a price’ are endearing and droll, and the
celebrities he handled make for a grand cast of characters in this very affectionate
memoir. Add to that the stories of writing and directing for Roger Corman, as well as
his childhood memories, and you have a book that’s a fun, fast read.”

Also, one from Charles Pogue:

“Michael B. Druxman may have escaped Hollywood after forty-five years, but
he also survived and thrived there all those years...hardly a feat for the faint-hearted.
His entertaining and amusing memoir tells us how he did it. With tenacity and talent, he
went from PR agent to screenwriter to director and, along the way, rubbed shoulders
with a fascinating array of characters, con-men, and artists. From the stars to the
strugglers, from the saints to the scammers, from those who soared to those who took a
swan dive, they're all here. We meet the great, the near-great, the not-so great who
make Hollywood their home and their hunting ground. Druxman depicts their triumphs
and follies, as well as his own, with the nuanced eye of one who has seen Hollywood at
its meanest and most magnificent.”

Thanks, guys.

Hey y'all.  Guess summer is over for me as I head back to school for a teacher "work" day.  Where did the summer go?

A fourth Adriana Hofstetter mystery??  Oy and vey, I guess I had better read the latest one, which is purchased, on the shelf, and never got read.  Not sure why...

Tonight, I'm going to a Rufus Wainwright concert at the Mountain Winery, which is an outdoor amphitheater with my BFF, Raegena.  I'm hoping for lovely weather!

A Big Happy Birthday to DR TCB!!

I'm out

Nice review, bk! I don't know why I bother to write any reviews when others do it so well. The one thing I took exception with was: "Paramount just couldn’t afford the negative publicity from the rising star." I wish he had explained that a little more; that they didn't want the wholesome image of Cindy associated with a "racy" film.

Enjoy Rufus, Matthew. I've seen him several times, once with his sister Martha. Sounds like a great location for a show!

I need to go back and re-read MR BK's book - I missed the chapter on 'party-induced shenanigans" - although I will take the quote as the title of a chapter in my MEMOIRS - $29.95.

So anyway - why should I with hold information from my friends here at HHW....

I was at Wal-Mart this morning, and in the check out aisle, I found out:

The Kardashian Sisters are feuding - Kim is saying Khloe is jealous of her body.

Sandra's New Joy - Sandra Bullock is moving on from her marriage by adopting a little boy.

Angelina is BORED With Brad - this headline needs no further description.

DR ELMORE - Dream O Matic 6000 certainly makes the conclusion you came to about JM.....however it will add that your current work to preserve his reputation and material is done with some annoyance at the time it is taking - particularly those questions that only the man himself could answer.
I suggest a seance.

I shall look forward to the new installment of the Andrea Hofstetter series.

My favorite Detective Series include:

The Thin Man
Mr Wong with Boris Karloff
Sherlock Holmes

Bookwise.....Mr Sherlock Holmes takes it, although I also like Ellery Queen and Miss Marple.

I found the review quite positive (five stars) but found odd the same things some of you have found odd - that I lost more than I won (is he kidding?), and the party stuff - I rarely went to parties and, in fact, I don't think I mention one of them, unless you count the evening with Groucho or the Elsa Lanchester brunches.  Still, very positive and we can pull good quotes from it.

Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell was twice made into a musical.

The first version, Carmelina was a huge flop, despite a number of fine original songs by Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane.

Like every respectable respecter of copyright, they purchased the rights to use the story, and the original was credited on the poster, playbill, album, etc.

What can I say about the second version?  It didn't use any original songs.  Rather, it took a bunch of old pop hits from the disco era and told the same story in witless and lugubrious fashion.  Worse still, it doesn't credit Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell at all; the author claims the story to be original.  If I'd adapted something so offensive and smarmy, I'd deflect credit away from myself.  And that's not a knock on Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, it's just how the second musical version feels to me.

Of course this musical that stole everything is a huge hit, and its film version became the top-grossing movie musical in the history of British cinema, Mamma Mia.
