The raw food movement, which is largely vegan, though some eat raw-milk cheeses and raw seafood, has plenty of amazing recipes that rely on the bold flavors of real food. Soups, salads, all sorts of wonderful ingredients from avocados to zucchini, and nothing to resemble tofurky in the lot.

Reminds me of a scene on the TV show "King of the Hill." Hank Hill has to change his diet, so he goes to the health food store. He's at the "deli."

Clerk: ... And here we have tofu and faux-fu for the tofu-intolerant.

Hank: Do you have anything back there that tastes good?

Clerk: (Long pause.) Mmm. Nope.

DVD: Extract, a comedy from Mike Judge, creator of "King of the Hill."

CD: Haines His Way

Car CD: Disc 3 of "American Gods." (Thankfully, Miss Becky Sharp and "Vanity Fair" have been put to rest.)

MP3: "Sugar." The way it should always have sounded.

And the word of the day is: MISOGAMY!
Sounds like a bad Japanese Miso soup in which the tofu has curdled. (Though how can you tell bad tofu from good?)

I don't begrudge anyone being a vegetarian or a vegan and I'm sure there are creative and good ways of preparing foods - but vegan is so extreme and I don't like extreme in food, even though others do.  But that stuff is just not for me.  I can eat a nice salad and I can go without red meat and I can even JUST eat salads and that sort of thing for a few days.  The fact is, I don't eat nearly as much meat as I used to, as in every day.  I mostly eat chicken and fish now, along with eggs and stuff.

I never watched a single episode of this last run of PROJECT RUNWAY.  I don't know why.  I just didn't.

I think what I object to is taking foods and trying to make them into something else. If you are vegan and opposed to eating pig, why would you create something that reminds you of bacon? Why make mayonnaise that has no eggs in it?

I've actually wondered the same thing time and again whenever I go to a vegetarian restaurant. Why "remind" yourself of the foods you gave up eating for personal health and/or ethical reasons?

I am thinking I may give up on SURVIVOR and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Well, I will continue to watch this season's SURVIVOR as long as Chase is on it. As a contestant I don't feel one way or the other about him, but as eye candy he can't be beat.

I added some new police drama called DETROIT 187 (or something like that.) Have not decided if I will stick with it or not...for now it is a good substite for SOUTHLAND and THE CLOSER, until those shows starts up again.

Last night we had a chili feed / chili contest at our apartment building. Good food and good company! 3 of the four ladies (Vee, Sally, and Virginia) who live along my wing of the 4th floor were there, so I mostly hung out with them...I have really nice neighbors.

I also met Sudhir and Krishna, both from from India, Ramos from Colombia, and Mira (and her 5 year old daughter Miju) from South Korea.

We voted for best chili and there was a scary noise contest which was judged by little Miju. Miju gave the award for scariest noise to the other 5 year old girl who was there. Personally,  I think the whole thing was rigged.

BK, when you see Linda Purl and Gregory Harrison, ask Linda if Gregory will be coming with her when she comes to Salem in April!

I am looking forward to seeing her show, and if Gregory will be in the show...well, all the better, since I have long been a fan of his (although I had no idea he even sang).

bk - As far as vegan food being low-cal, well... Since nuts and grains are usually "calorie dense"... But it's all about the portion size... Or how much you ate before you stopped eating it because it tasted so bad. ;)

I'm Glad To read, from other DR's ,that it is difficult to read the small print in The Sondheim Book. Why did the publisher allow this to happen....and especially Sondheim himself?

I almost made an Eye Doctor appointment because of this.

I am Hoping that Amazon offers this as an e-book so I can order the book and enlarge the print

Off to the Unemployment Insurance hearing in 28 minutes - this (I guess first) hearing will be by phone.

(Wasn't there a REALLY GOOD song "Now we're here for the hearing" in THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC?)
