So today, our HR manager sent out this e-mail:

Quote
To All:

New Year's Eve Early Closure – The Library Director has indicated that libraries and the Service Center will close at 6:00PM on Friday, 12/31/2010.

This is not paid holiday time so staff who are regularly scheduled to work beyond 6:00PM that evening will need to use vacation time or coordinate with their supervisor to adjust their schedule.

Have a safe holiday!

And then a little later, someone from one of the branches sent this e-mail:

Quote
We'll have no problem getting everyone out by 6:00, since all library branches close by 5:00 on Fridays. =)

;D

Why isn't that a holiday for you?  New Year's Day is a national holiday, and since it falls on a Saturday, Friday becomes the paid holiday.

We don't get New Year's Eve off.  You would have to use vacation to get the day off.  Since New Year's Day is on a day that I'm not normally scheduled to work, I get to add 8 hours to my monthly vacation accrual for January.

It's the same with Christmas...Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are both paid holidays for us.  Since Christmas Eve is on a Friday, we get the day off.  Since Christmas Day is on a Saturday, we get to add 8 hours to December's monthly vacation accrual.  If I normally worked on Saturday (like the people who work in the branch libraries), I would get the day off instead.

Make sense??

And on that note (pick a note...any note), I'm off.  Time to head home for some TV watching.

Until later!

It gets even crazier when you work for a church, believe me.  Next year will be totally crazy since Christmas is on Sunday.

T.O.D.

The ones covered in chocolate.
Ditto. I'd eat any and all, though my favs are the ones with a filling that has a contrasting texture, such as nuts, coconut or gooey toffee.

Watching "Miracle on 34th Street" for the first time in ages. Forgot my favorite scene, when the drunken wife warbles about how much she'd love to have Santa Claus come live with her.

Before I head home for Christmas, I need to spend at least six solid hours organizing some stuff in my room. Of course, I could have done that yesterday. Or today. Or last Friday. Or... Well... Ah, well...

bk - I noticed that Time-Warner was tweeting about the problems in Southern California again earlier tonight. I'm guessing they must be dealing with some sort of bug in their system.

Speaking of chocolates, I received a very nice box of Teuscher champagne truffles from our Canadian producer. I think these are about the best chocolates I've ever had. It took an act of sheer will power to share them with friends when they came over. Yummy!

When the store were fairly new to the States I used to get their Carmel filled milk chocolate candies.  As the prices went up I fortunately tired of them.

Here in NYC, there is a Teuscher store in Rockefeller Center, as well as one on the Upper East Side. Lately, it seems like the Rock Center location has added a "tourist mark-up" to most of their items. :-\

Ballerina Jenifer Ringer....

too skinny, too fat, or just right?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101213/us_yblog_thelookout/sugar-plum-fairy-doesnt-want-apology-from-critic-who-called-her-fat

The critic didn't call her too fat, just said she'd looked like she ate one sugar plum too many, and he also called a male dancer too fat, but no one's making a fuss over that.

But since Ringer has suffered from anorexia in the past, it was a rather cruel thing to say.

I wonder ow many girls are going to develop anorexia once Michele Obama's school program gets going.

I saw the story & think it is cruel to make comments like that anorexia or not.  Supposedly Karen Carpenter developed anorexia after similar comments.

You could be right, while the school program is a step in the right direction it is a long way from reaching the goal of teaching healthy eating habits, IMHO.

I'm pretty sure that Michelle Obama's new school program does NOT include pictures of wafer-thin models and actresses, nor does it use Barbie dolls in it's promotional materials.  Promoting healthier eating habits will not cause anorexia.  Getting girls and young women to stop comparing themselves to the "role models" they see in magazines and on TV and in the movies will.

My other favorite box of chocolates comes from here:
http://www.burdickchocolate.com/

Walpole, NH is where these chocolates, and Ken Burns are based, and I believe he owns stock in this company, too!

DR edisaurus - You may not want to know this, but there is an L.A. Burdick Chocolate Cafe in NYC on East 20th Street. It's conveniently located halfway between City Bakery and Shake Shack. ;)

In other news...

Earlier tonight, I attended a performance of Three Pianos at the New York Theatre Workshop.

What an amazingly cool evening of song and theatre! The three actors - along with three pianos and various props - basically perform Schubert's great song cycle, "Winterreise" ("Winter's Journey"), but they also deconstruct it, embellish it, and mess it up a bit.  It's very hard to describe, it's truly unique. -They even served wine - for free - before and during the proceedings!

There was also a talkback tonight after the show with the cast and two Schubert experts - one from Juilliard and one from Fordham - and that was quite fun and informative too.

*Best of all, I won the tickets via Twitter. :)
