FLITTING ABOUT WITH GAY ABANDON
« on: February 23, 2011, 10:43:56 PM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had gay abandon and then some, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having some gay abandon and they're enjoying it very much.

My favorite Jimmy Webb song, hands down, is "No Signs of Age." Not a hit, not even recorded by anyone until Webb finally did it himself on his 2005 "Twilight of the Renegades" album, but it's beautiful nonetheless, an elegantly worded tribute to an enduring love.

The secret of youth
Surely is yours
Your beauty endures
And love never dies
It will not disengage
In my memory tonight
You show no signs of age

Though Webb has recorded it, and performed it in concert, the definitive version, IMHO (in my honest opinion, in Internet lingo), is by Glen Campbell, performed live in February 1998 on the television show "Primetime Country." Webb played piano, Campbell sang and magic happened. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCKZRsojEoY

Morning all.

That is all.

Except I need a haircut. I won't be able to get one until Saturday. I feel shaggy.

Good morning, all!The neighbor showed up around 5:45am, and I was up at 6:30, so there wasn't much sleep in the last 45 minutes I was in bed. I did sleep well most of the night; my last dream was about WHERE'S CHARLEY?, a show I was in as an 8th grade student with Richard, the husband of DR Ginny. Richard also played in the orchestra, so he was continually running down to the pit to bang the timpani. In lasty night's dream, Richard and I were looking at photos of a production in which his son Rob was in WHERE'S CHARLEY; it was in prep for a rebroadcast of an Ed Sullivan show with excerpts from the Loesser show. So, I managed to combne the past, and today's orchestra reading into a real Freudian nightmare.

So, this morning I am off to Carroll Studios to hear the Encores! orchestra play through the score of WHERE'S CHARLEY? and that will consume most of my day. There should be a strange conglomerate of folk: friends from the Loesser office, Bruce Pomahac from Rodgers & Hammerstein, Joshie, his brother Jeremy, John Doyle, who's directing the show, the choreographer, Jack Viertel, and God alone knows who else. Oh, yes, the mighty Rob Berman on the podium.

When I get back here, there should be a pile of mail waiting for me; I doubt there will be a Foundation check because, once again, the jerk who pays us is off somewhere and checks are in lockdown till this joker returns, another reason I'm ready to walk from this job. I've got a printout of a full orchestra score for Offenbach's TALES OF HOFFMANN that needs to be taped before I can have it bound. I've got Acts 3-5 to finish taping.

Jimmy Webb is a performer whose songs I like when I hear them, but I cannot think of a single title except for "MacArthur Park," and its overripe lyrics always make me laugh.

Thursday morning greetings!  Today I must grocery shop for my family and get ready to host my book group tonight.  We're discussing The Secret Confessions of Anne Shakespeare by Arliss Ryan, with whom I went to high school and college.  She's agreed to join us by speaker phone, so it should be a fun evening.

We are doing laundry this afternoon after work. It's scheduled to rain in Manhattan tomorrow plus I have a doctor's appointment (a follow-up after the surgery).

Little sleep last night. And reading my outdated class material, a book called "Beyond Silenced Voices," did not put me to sleep. Instead, I read about teenage romances from the mid-1980s (that is how outdated the book is) from an era before "Harry Potter" and the "Twilight" series, both of which changed teen lit as we know it and rendered most every aspect of the essay meaningless.

TOD: I don't know enough about Jimmy Webb to know which songs are usually his. I forgot "Wichita Lineman" or "MacArthur Park" were his until reading the posts. So, here goes:

"Wichita Lineman," Glen Campbell
"MacArthur Park," Donna Summer (because it is so awful)
"The Moon's a Harsh Mistress," Christine Andreas

Vixmom:

I loved THE KING'S SPEECH

Great script, dialogue, direction and performances.

I believe I've mentioned it here before, but David Seider (the screenwriter) and I were at the University of Washington Drama Department together (1959-60).

Morning all!  The swelling has gone down a little.  I am so looking forward to going to the eye doctor later today in hopes that he will tell me I can put my contacts back in.  I HATE wearing these glasses.  I can't really see that well for them.  Most of the computer screen is a blur to me with them on.  I just hope I'll be able to drive.

I look at the pictures of all the snow and think about the time after Mom passed when I really wanted to move to Pittsburgh.  What was I thinking!?  There is no way I could have handled something like that.   Here the only thing I have to deal with is leafs and even those are not a big problem because I just use the mulching lawn mower to grind them up.  I don't rake them.

People spend their time raking the leafs then spending money on buying grass food.  Hello?  The ground up leafs ARE grass food and it's FREE.    Not to mention that the leafs protect the grass when we get frost.  Nature works.  :)

I slept very well last night.  Not to hot or cold.  Just perfect.  Lots of dreams that I really can't remember now.
