If that's true and you're not just funning with us, it's just another reason why the Emmys are meaningless.

The singing box and tree is true -- but getting my vote because of it is not.

Last week a huge presentation arrived for JOAN OF ARCADIA.

DR Panni, I'd be interested in which episode(s) they submitted, and for what categories.  (Only if you can divulge, of course.)

Tree or no tree, JOAN is lovely show that, IMHO (internet lingo for "in my humble opinion") is well written, well acted, and rarely fails to bring a tear (or tears) to my eye (or eyes) by the final 4 minutes.  It is never preachy, and is certainly not half as treacly as that other "G-d is amongst us" show (TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL) was.   (In our house it was a/k/a  RE-TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, given the amount of gauze they always seemed to use).

DR Panni: I'm curious, do you have to watch everything they send you?

And what are you supposed to do with the stuff afterwards?  (I mean do you have to give it back, do they allow you to give it to others ...).

Check out this interesting link to Michael Riedel's NY Post column. It's about how he thinks Donna Murphy has lost the Tony for Best Actress because of her attendance and attitude.

Panni, as a fan of JOAN OF ACADIA, I too would like to know which episode you received.

I'm still laughing over the story.  The song was a great touch-wish I could have seen Abie's reaction.  ;D ;D

I thoroughly enjoyed FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX this afternoon, and that surprised me since the 2 1/2 hour running time didn't seem to bode well for a Robert Aldrich film. Often I've felt his films of more than two hours were really padded and hard to take. This wasn't, and it was also unusual seeing James Stewart playing in many ways a less-than-heroic and somewhat disagreeable character.

I have to say that's a great relief to me, DR Panni. I mean that.

I thought the Donna Murphy article was quite interesting. "(Paraphrased): Funny how a woman who can't do eight shows a week can stay out until one in the morning..." I thought that line was particularly cutting. We'll see what happens. If you didn't have the opportunity to read Mr. Chuck Cooper's Tony Memories yesterday on Broadway.com, you simply must. He came off like a huge jackass...

Dippin' Dots is a brand of ice cream here in the States. It's literally little pellets of ice cream, frozen solid with dry ice, and mixed with other flavored pellets to make your favorite flavor combination. For example, today I had banana split, which consisted of banana (yellow) pellets, chocolate (brown) pellets, strawberry (pink) pellets and vanilla (white) pellets. You allow the pellets to melt in your mouth and all of a sudden you have this great flavor combination. They're extremely cold--they steam from the cup--and they feel really weird in your mouth while they're melting. I love them...I think I'm in the minority, though. Great fun!

RE: the Riedel column, I know there are a lot of politics involved.  But I guess Ij ust don't get how somebody who was favored to win only days ago, is now expected to lose?

Jane and Stuart - RE Joan of Arcadia - I forgot to mention that the script of the pilot was also included in the package. The submitted episodes are the Pilot and "Jump" from 1/9/04. The synopsis of "Jump" has to do with her friend Adam's mother's suicide. I've never seen the show and would actually take a look, but my DVD player is broken.
Jennifer - The tapes, DVDs, scripts, trees and singing boxes are mine to keep. They're taking over my small living space. I was at a garage sale a month or two ago - the house of a fairly well-known character actor - and they were selling boxes of Emmy tapes. One is not supposed to do that, of course. When I left Boulder, I had several huge garage sales in which I put out all my Emmy tapes with a sign - "One Free Tape with Every Purchase"... That's not quite the same as selling them. People loved it. One older man came by and asked if he could have some for his Assisted Living Home. I said sure. He took a bunch -- some of which were (unknown to him, I think) not exactly Old Folks Home material. Probably put a spring in the step of a few of the residents!

Shall be E & T for this Victoria Day Weekend, aka the 24th of May Weekend. (And this year, the 24th falls on the 24th. When I first moved to Canada, someone asked me, "When is the 24th this year?") I just popped in and am popping out. I had time simply to scan the posts. The good news is that DR Danise is heading to NYC. Best of health and travel vibes. And best of weekend vibes to all.

CD Home:  Ute Lemper
CD Car:  Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits
DVD:  Now--Calendar Girls  This Weeknd:  Happy Texas and Real Women Have Curves
VCR:  The season finale of West Wing which I didn't have time to watch this week.

I work at a community college and today is graduation.  I had a student come up to me today and thanked me for helping her through his two years of college.  She is a single mom with two kids and will graduate with her RN degree.  I didn't even know the student well--I helped her get in a couple of classes that were closed.  I realize I'm being a little sentimental, but situations like this make the job worth it.

Happy Friday!

I've certainly bought a few of the "For Your Consideration" tapes and DVDs at used video sites for years. I like your way better, DR Panni.

DR Jennifer:  ah, the wistful innocence of youth.  "FF" is either:  1) fortissimo; 2) the two middle letters of my last name; or 3) Frances Farmer.  You choose.

I was surprised that Riedel concluded that Toya Pinkins was the obvious favorite now to win the Tony. After praising Kristin Chenoweth in the article, I assumed he was going to annoint her. In fact, now that Riedel has annointed Tonya, that might be the best way for either Idina or Kristin to win it.

Jennifer - Forgot to answer your other question. I suppose one should watch everything in order to vote fairly. But that would be impossible at this preliminary stage. Before the finals are announced -- everything that's submitted is in the running. That's hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
I was recently asked to be a trustee for the Humanitas prize. For that award (which is prestigious and also involves a fair amount of money) there's a selected jury and everything must be read - which I did. But the numbers are not nearly as large as in the Emmy Awards.

Well, I don't know....

That article on Donna Murphy is pretty mean, even if Donna deserves the nasty remarks!

... and what if she doesn't care about a Tony?.... and if there are understudies, there must a reason and a use of them?.... and yes, it must be hard to do 8 shows a week!... and staying up until 1 am once does not compare....

Ah... "politics"!

But then, what do I know?? :D

That's the ONLY way to be nowadays!

Riedel sure is NOT sentimental!
He's just mental!

must be "guilty pleasure" media day for me. . .

DVD player holds INDEPENDENCE DAY. . .great sound, even if it isn't DTS; makes me look forward to THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW.

CD player holds my most recent Ebay win: MAME, the original soundtrack recording.  (as many DRs know, this Rhino Handmade release sold out of its 2500 limited editions).  Hey, I like Robert Preston's "Loving You" and "Mame" as well as the rest of the cast, but, I don't LOVE LUCY.

VCR holds a film by Kristen Bjorn, though which one, I'm not sure.

I've had BOUNCE for over a week now, and still haven't played it. . .first Jane Olivor's "Safe Return" took to the player, then MAME followd.

DR Jane,

SURFSIDE 6 plays every Tuesday on the Goodlife Network along with 77 SUNSET STRIP and HAWAIIAN EYE.

Also for DR Jane and BK, when I was at BEST BUY this weekend I noticed in their $5.99 bin that there was a DVD set of CISCO KID episodes and a set of ANNIE OAKLEY episodes. 8 or 10 episodes of each show. Oh and a set of the old ROBIN HOOD TV series with Richard Greene. Is there a best buy in Medford or in L.A.?
