I wasn't able to watch the Oscars and also post last night. Nicky wasn't feeling well, and he ended up crashing on my lap. so I couldn't get to the computer. Sometimes life interupts HHW.

Personally I enjoyed the Oscars last night. I was disappointed that there wasn't one single suprise. All the awards went down the line as expected. I thought Mr. Franco and Ms Hathaway managed sto stay out of the way. Their material was pretty lame, but does anyone really tune it to laugh at the jokes? The show is about the awards, and I thought those were done well.

While catching up on last night's posts, here are some comments:

re: the interviewers. I watched the pre-show on E! so i didn't have to sit through crappy interviews. It was only Ryan Seacrest (who I think is very good at these types of interviews).

I thought Hailee Steinfeld looked sweet and age-appropriate. I did not like Jennifer Hudson's tangerine dress (didn't hate it just didn't like the color or the bustline). I liked Cate Blanchett's dress (pink) but didn't love it. Hillary Swank - very nice. Halle Berry -stunning! Really liked Gwyneth Paltrow's dress. Didn't care for Nicole Kidman's dress. Red dresses - liked Jennifer Lawrence -simple but beautiful. Liked Anne Hathaway's red carpet dress. Sandra Bullock's was nice. But i liked the first two better. Liked Penelope Cruz's too (and she just had a baby!).

Since I recorded the show I sped through the interviews.

I liked Sandra's red dress the best. I had mixed feelings about the bathing suit look on Jennifer though I admit she looked great in it. I didn't care of Penelope's dress.

I thought that Penelope's dress looked much different on tv vs photos. I liked it better on the red carpet. I can't believe how different it photographed.

I don't remember seeing her on the red carpet.

I meant on the tv vs a photo.

Hi HHW people! I hope you will forgive me for popping in out of the proverbial blue like this, but I had a question and I thought "Who might know better than the theater-savvy crowd at HHW?" DH Jed and I went to see Next To Normal at the 5th Ave in Seattle last night. The show opened on Thursday, I believe. Alice Ripley was still in as Diana and she sounded HORRIBLE! I had never heard the OCR, so I had nothing to compare it to, and I was astounded at how off-key, raspy, and warbling she sounded. Jed, who knows the OCR pretty well, sat there with his mouth hanging open. The final shocker? They announced over the PA system that her understudy would be taking over for Act 2. Never seen that happen mid-show before.
I have seen rumblings on the web that her voice has been having trouble for awhile...

So...anyone know what the deal is? Why is she still doing the show?? It it really just illness or is her voice thrashed beyond repair?

I loved her interpretation of the character, there is no question that she lives and breathes that role, but the flat and shaky singing was distracting to the point of irritation. The PA announcement attributed the cast change to illness...but I've heard actors sing while ill, and I've never heard a head cold do that to a voice. If she really was that sick, then she was foolish for going on and pushing her voice like that.

Finally flood-free! Still some soaking up to do basement-wise, but, I've turned on the fans and the dehumidifier is running.

I once saw a dreadful touring production of "South Pacific" with Robert Goulet as the star. The Nellie Forbush couldn't continue after the first act, so they replaced her with another actress. No one said anything. I think they were all asleep.

So, I woke up this morning to discover that I had a short paper due today on a movie of my choice from a list of five or six. I had seen "Lean on Me" ages ago and never wanted to see it again. So I ran to the library to get "Freedom Writers" with Hilary Swenk. Then watched the movie, cranked out four pages and was the second one to turn in the paper. Guess the rest of the class failed to notice the deadline, too.

DR JohnG, was this in 2002 or so? If it was, I was rather surprised at how good the show was.
