And I did get to enjoy DESK SET. Boy, did they do wonders with the color or what! That disc was among the more vibrant Deluxe color films I've ever seen. It's far richer than THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS.

Suffice to say, I was impressed!

I loved "Urinetown" when I saw it at the Henry Miller, although I do agree that it can be a little too self-referential and arch. I've heard so many wonderful things about Christiane Noll's Hope...my friends who saw it say she was an improvement on Jennifer Laura Thompson, wacky and golden-voiced as Ms. Thompson was.

BK--I read a book in NYC called "Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theatre and Beyond" by Barry Singer. I loved the interview with you! It's a fabulous book, although I didn't agree with everything Singer said.

Jennifer - I don't know how to answer your question. Obvously it's all conjecture. Truthfully, it might not have made a huge difference. This business - for good reason - is not exactly a business known for its altruism. If the management felt it was more convenient to have the new understudy go on than an actress who was leaving, then that's what would happen, hometown or no hometown. But, as I said, I have no idea. Had I been the one shafted, I would have gone back today and asked one more time for ONE performance. That way, the new understudy could have one and I could have one. But I'm one of those annoying "never give up" people.

Well, there were a couple of pages talking about the leading producers of theatre music. I mean, the book mostly discussed actual productions and theatre politics, but there was also quite a bit on the cast recording industry...for instance, a lot about how labels used to produce far more cast recordings than they do today, because of rising costs.

Was it an OLD interview? The book definitely quoted you, BK. I can't tell you what it said, because I borrowed it from a friend and don't have it on me now.

DR Maya, check out Peter Filichia's review from last week, in which he calls it the worst book on musical theatre in 25 years! I find it confusingly assembled, and having worked with Mr Singer, I'll say no more . . .

elmore, I feel the same about Mr. Singer. I remember when Mr. Sondheim "insisted" we use him to write the notes for Unsung Sondheim. I thought they weren't very good and have been surprised ever since that Mr. Singer continues to write regularly as a knowledgable theater person.

Thank you, Elmore, for reminding me of what an asset Peter Filichia is to both TheatreMania.com, and to the theatre community. When I read "Ever After," I DID notice inconsitencies like his calling "Big River" a concept musical, but I just told myself that I must be wrong because he's a writer for the NY Times, and I'm not. Wow....now I feel like reading that book was just a big waste, even though I DID learn things from it.

DR Maya, trust me; it isn't the worst book ever written on musicals in the past 25 years. I think Denny Martin Flinn's MUSICAL! is. Don't let a review keep you from reading something that interests you, because you may disagree with the reviewer, and the more you know, the broader your scope. I enjoy your intelligence and insight, which are very sharp for a young lady. I hope I'll have a while to watch you grow and develop on this site

I just like learning as much about theatre as I can, even if my knowledge can sometimes be reduced to trivia about who played what role and who won what Tony.

I also just started on a new book called "Making it on Broadway."

It has anecdotes from many prominent Broadway performers about what it's like to work in the business. It's very illuminating so far, but also rather disillusioning. Some of the stars talk about working day jobs even while doing a Broadway show...or going home alone on the subway after the show is done. It's not all gloom and doom though...there are some very funny stories too. Anyway, I recommend it!

Maya, lucky you. You got to see JUMPERS and one of the best actors working in the English Language theatre today...Simon Russell Beale. I had desperately wanted to see this play on a planned trip to England this Spring which I had to cancel due to pre-production rewrites on my mini-series. But I've been fortunate to see Mr. Simon Russell Beale on many occasions in London...Duchess of Malfi, Money, Summerfolk, and the incredible Humble Boy. He always delights me. Stoppard...along with Peter Shaffer...also happens to be my favourite living playwright. So you got a two-for-one deal with Jumpers.

Question is who'll get the Tony? Plummer or Beale (or is it Russell Beale?)? Is Frank Langella realistically in the running against these two? If I had to vote, I'd go crazy. These are three of my favourite theatre actors.

I know the authors David and Jodie, and they're both wonderful folk. I saw David last weekend and he gave me hell for not yet reading it. I told him I'd take it to Goodspeed with me. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Occasionally I'll see an actor on the bus or subway after a show. Hey, it's cheaper than taxis or limos!

Yes, I feel very lucky to have seen it, and Russell Beale was quite amazing! I want to read more Stoppard as well--I'm really not as familiar with his work as I should be.

That's a good question as to who will win!! It's like Battle of the Shakespeareans! I honestly don't know, but I would be more than happy with either one as I love them both!

I haven't read it, but it'd have to go a long way down the road to beat John Clum's hideous SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS. I've never read a book so chock full of errors.

I am sure there will be many here who are glad this is the last week of AMERICAN IDOL. After Wednesday, there won't be much talkl about it.

Let me say even before the final competition on Tuesday that I will NOT be watching the two hour results show on Wednesday night. I may watch the last half hour or so, but as I rememberedlast year's endless countdown leading up to Ruben being named the winner, I learned my lesson.
