It's foggy and misty in Portland.

I must churn out a review of a new AC/DC Blu-ray concert this morning.  I'm sure you can all understand how incredibly excited by this prospect I am.

Greetings from Toyland!

I never liked Gerald Bordman who was pompous, arrogant, and a lousy author. He lived in Bucks County, PA, and he would come into the Drama Book Shop on Saturdays before a matinee and play "author." I remember two things about him:
  1. When Bill Tynes produced a 1985 centennial concert for Jerome Kern, for which I supplied several orchestrations, everyone involved got a "Jerome Kern Centennial" button, which I wore on my coat; Bordman jumped me in the theatre district one Saturday demanding to know wty I was wearing the button; he was the author of a Kern biography!
  2. One day at the Drama Book Shop, I had a reference call about what one-acts were in Thornton Wilder's "Plays for Bleeker Street." I went to Bordman's book on American Theatre and discovered Wilder had only written five plays: THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, OUR TOWN, THE MATCHMAKER, PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA, and THE LONG CHRISTMAS DINNER; I was so pissed that I called his publisher, asked to speak to the editor and told him Bordman's books were worthless for reference!

GIRL GROUPS:  The Boswell Sisters, The Andrews Sisters, The Dixie Cups, The Shirelles, Martha and the Vandellas
BOY GROUPS: The Drifters, JQ and the Bandits

I have been having a grand ol' time perusing the Variety archives, albeit in "preview mode" (which only gives me access to dribs and drabs), ferreting out information about Miss Frances Farmer.  She was the "it" girl of 1936-37, there's no question.  Full page ads touting her performances, articles by the handful virtually daily.  Really interesting to read.

Weather reports aren't too great when I'm in Memphis, so if it's nice when I get there I'm going to skip the museums (i can see them another trip) and head to the Cooking contest.   OTOH if it's raining , I'll go to the museum

His books are skimpy on facts, and I have found several faults/errors in them. But they are indispensable if only because there are no other works like that around. I enjoyed the Kern bio, but his flimsy book on the American revue was practically worthless.

Thunderstorms happening all around and the possibility of tornadoes and hail. But we're getting our first decent rain in many months, probably the first real precipitation since the snow, so I can't complain too much.

I will likely have to miss my friend's graduation because I ain't driving in that.

I wonder what the Weather Channel women on BK's earlier flight would make of it.

DR MBARNUM - the Hanna "book" is pretty useless.....very few words on either Allison or AOTFFW - both of which are mentioned more profusely in the foreward by the editor than by Mark Hanna in the text.

Oh well....it was only 3.99 - but not even worth that.

As for the Topic of the Day...

All the usual suspects. However, I will admit a soft spot for the Christmas songs/arrangements that Phil Spector produced for The Ronettes and The Crystals and Darlene Love.
