Good Evening!

Well... I had stepped out earlier to go to lunch... And then once I realized that this would be my last full weekend in New York City until late October, I went ahead and stayed out.

DR vixmom - I hope that most of the boxes that got soaked were filled with things you were going to throw out anyway. Be sure to take breaks this weekend as you clean up. Take care of yourself.

*Maybe the vixter could have a "Help Me Clean Out the Basement Graduation Party"? ;)

So...

Today is National Iced Tea Day. Well, at least that's what Snapple said/declared. And in conjunction with National Iced Tea Day, Snapple gave out free lunches - and free bottles of Snapple - at five of New York City's most popular food trucks. Since I hadn't been to Schnitzel & Things for a while, and since the Schnitzel & Things truck was basically down the street from me, well...

There was quite a line when I got there, but the weather was nice and people were in good spirits. Plus, the guy giving out the bottles of Snapple made sure everyone stayed hydrated and smiling. And my Pork Schnitzel, Roasted Beets & Feta Salad and Braised Sauerkraut were all quite Yummilicious! -And the Raspberry Snapple - "made with REAL sugar" - was quite thirst-quenching too. ;)

And then it turned out that the Sweetery truck was just a block away doing a promo with Yahoo!, and they were giving out free Blackberry Whoopie Pies. Dessert!

Mary Linda has arrived safely from Michigan and we're all going tomorrow to an open house at Rob's paramedic school.  He will receive his pin and we'll go out for a nice lunch afterwards.

'night!

Then I just continued wandering and walking. I made my way to Grand Central Terminal. When I got to the Main Concourse, I noticed a SEA of fluorescent yellow-green shirts. It turned out a middle school from somewhere in Ohio had just arrived and were starting their weekend class trip in New York City. I asked one of the chaperones just how many students he was traveling with: 200(!).

I wished him well and Godspeed. ;)

Then I walked down 5th Avenue for a bit past the New York Public Library... Then over to Madison Avenue for a bit... Through Madison Square Park... Down Broadway to Union Square Park... And then I checked in on Doug at The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck.

Everything was going well at the BGICT, and even though he had a constant stream of customers, he wasn't slammed. Well... Once 4:30 hit, the line literally went from 4 people to 25 people. Of course, that was when the freezer pump on his soft-serve machine decided to stop working. Luckily, it was only down for a minute or two... But the line kept growing... Eventually Bryan, Doug's partner and Partner, arrived, and I stepped in to expedite orders and act as cashier.

Of course, the machine just stopped working again for a bit. Well, more than a little bit. Thankfully, the weather was nice and everyone in line was quite understanding. After checking some fuses and switching some switches, everything started back up again.

...And about two and a half hours later, I bade my farewells and headed back uptown.

OOHHHHH!!!!

There was one "lady" who came up to the window of the truck. She was dressed in a very smart, black business suit, and she had a roller bag...

"Excuse me, I have to catch a train back to Philadelphia... Could I cut in line?"

-I explained to her that that would be up to the people "behind" her.

They all said, "No."

"Well... I really do have a train to catch, and I took a taxi from 72nd down here so that I could grab a cone before heading back to Philadelphia."

-Again, I explained to her that all these people had been waiting in line for up to 30 minutes, and that it just wouldn't be fair to them to let her cut in line at this point.

She then turned to the people in line:

"I will buy your ice cream for you, if you let me in."

After some hemming and hawing, a young woman finally acquiesced - I think mainly just to get the lady to go away.

"Do you take credit cards?"

Um, No.

"Well, what if I wrote you a check?"

No. There is an ATM next door.

"But I'm really in a rush and I don't have time to go there."

-Of course, by this time, she had been there about 10 minutes.

She eventually found some cash in her purse, got to the window...

"Well, what should I get? What's your most popular item?"

Cue the of eye-rolling.

She eventually settled on a Monday Sundae and a Salty Pimp.

"Do you have a cup or dish I could place this in?"

Yes, we can give you a "boat".

When Doug handed her Monday Sundae thru the window, and placed it in the "boat", she asked for a second one to cover it. Then she asked to make sure that her Salty Pimp was also placed in a "boat".

"Do you have ice packs? I'm bringing these back for my husband in Philadelphia?"

Cue more eye-rolling.

I really don't think those will make it to Penn Station. It's soft-serve and not hard-pack.

"Really? You don't think they'll stay frozen? My husband has heard so much about the truck, and he can't get into NYC during the week"

Well, we are out on the weekends too.

"Really?"

By that point, we just gave her her treats and let her go her merry way. Now whether that was to Penn Station en route to Philadelphia... Or just over to a bench in Union Square... We didn't really care by that point...

Buh-BYE!

In more sobering news, one of the writers at Serious Eats lost his dog earlier this week in a tragic accident. Here's his very loving tribute which is accompanied by a wonderful slide show:

Ben, I hope you enjoy the show. I would imagine, as has been discussed on these pages before, that it is a visual feast. But somehow, I couldn't muster enough enthusiasm for "Book of Mormon" to download the CD for $1.99. If the library gets it, I may copy it, but it left me so apathetic on first listen that I can't imagine wanting to listen to it again.

not sure if the library would get a copy because of the language unless they get the "clean" version

Cool. I wanna hear how Maury Yeston's score is. He's been working on this for ages.

Ginny, I'm using this last night to clean some of hte house. I ahve to come home to a filthy house and, well, this place is filthy. The bird is safely ensconced in the Tweet Suite, his home away from home, and I can get frantic without my feathered friend flopping about on my shoulder.

Tweet Suite isn't that a song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

John the image of you cleaning with your feathered friend on your shoulder made me smile.
J.B. is on my shoulder most of the time I'm at home. He doesn't like to be there when I cook, but that's about it.
