DR JRand

If I may make a suggestion only because I've seen this happen before.

If the director is making unauthorized changes to the play (that you think are detrimental) you always inform the company that holds the rights to what is happening and they can put an end to it now instead of getting a stop and desist order after the play opens

TOD: I moved to San Antonio to be the dining critic for the paper. On my first night here, I knew nobody in town, didn't know where to turn. So I went to a restaurant near my hotel that had been heavily advertised in a circular at the hotel. Tex-Mex. Signature food of the new town. What could be better?

What could be worse? Horrible margarita. Tasted like it was made with Mountain Dew. Beans that had been microwaved with some sort of metal in them. They were too hot to heat after 30 minutes. When I finally could taste them, all I could taste was liquid smoke in all its artificial glory. Enchiladas so rubbery and cheap, some sort of guisada that all you could taste was flour.

I remember thinking, what have I gotten myself into?

After close to 13 years here, it still ranks as one of the worst dining experiences ever.

Good morning, all! I had Dublin dreams most of the night and slept in late, past 8:00. My last dream was about returning to Middletown, OH - I can't remember if my dad was in the dream ornot - but I do remember that I had a huge fight with mybrother Macbeth about his stupidity in marrying a woman that the entire world abominated and that I was stranded on Central Avenue with no vehicle.

Last night I had dinner with my dear friend Bruce Pomahac at a Columbus Avenue restaurant, The Blue Caravan. The food was quite good but I found the service intrusive; we had too frequent visits from the owner, two waitresses - one European and one Japanese - and the busboy, and we were unsure if one waitress had taken the order when another turned up  - or the owner did - with a question about taking our order again. Everyone there spoke English as a second language and that made things difficult at times; Bruce had to ask the waitress three times what  one of the specials was before we figured out it was asparagus. Still, the food was quite good.

Today, I have few plans before 2:30 or so. I will walk down to the 68th Street cineplex, maybe do some window shopping on the way, meet Charlotte there and see THE HELP. Once she knows her weekend schedule, we can plan to see OUR IDIOT BROTHER. Today is her first day of employment at a restaurant around the corner from her home, so I wish her luck with that.

TOD:

Aside from the lousy service at certain places over the years, the incident that sticks in my mind is the night that I was on a date at a fairly upscale restaurant on Ventura Blvd.

We're eating our meal.  I look up and see a giant cockroach walking across the wall just above my date's head.

Waiting for the Piano Tuner..... She said between 8:30 and 9:00.....she had a 7:30 am...that seems a bit early to be tuning pianos, lol.  Anyway, I hope she arrives soon.   Guess I could make breakfast. I'm not going to work until the piano is tuned

TOD:  I know I've had rotten restaurant experiences, but I've blotted them out...The only one I can remember is a very posh Chinese Restaurant in LA of which I've forgotten the name, we had a variation on the old "Waiter, what's this fly doing in my soup? ("The backstroke."  Rimshot).  One of our party picked up a dumpling with chopsticks to discover a fly stuck on the bottom of it.   Ah, and another time...again in LA...the chef made sarcastic comments loud enough to be heard about my wife salting her entree.  When asked by the management whether we had had a nice evening, we mentioned the chef's behaviour and the mortified owners loaded us down with desserts to take home.

DR MICHAEL S - that is not an option, since I am a board member of the company, but thanks for the suggestion.

Most of my terrible restaurant experiences are about the LONG LONG LONG wait for food, when there are plenty of help running around delivering food to others.....even those who arrived after we did....

I am talking to you, BOB EVANS!

DR Cillaliz - Piano tuners start their days early(!!!)!!. I still remember the one my parents would call would always have a slot at 7:00am if needed. -He would do that for events that started at 8:00am, as well as for those customers who wanted to get their pianos tuned before they headed to their 9:00am-5:00pm job.

That came in handy one year when I had a morning competition slot and I was traveling from Richmond to Arlington the night before. Our piano technician actually showed up at 6:30am(!!!), and not only did he tune the piano, but he also took care of some other routine maintenance. I was able to get in an hour of warm-up/practice from 8:00am-9:00am before heading to the venue.
