BK, glad you got your printer problem solved. IT's crazy how one small thing can be wrong, yet none of the people working there know about this small thing! Crazy.

Jrand, Time Machine is a backup drive - initially it backs up your entire computer, and then does hourly backups of whatever's new - it has two TBs of space so it can hold a huge amount of stuff.  But my Time Machine is part of Time Capsule - an all in one unit that is also my wireless router - it's a great everything in one place machine.

DR DRUXY - I bought a Canon printer/scanner for about $40 and I like it very much.  However, you probably print out many more pages than I do, so the ink might get expensive for you.

Back in October, I bought an Epson Artesian 730, a wireless three-in-one printer.  I absolutely love it!  Aside from the beautiful color printing, I'm finding the wireless part of it to be very handy.  I can print from my iPhone.  In fact, if I leave the printer on during the day, I can print from anywhere by sending anything I want to print to an e-mail address that I set-up through Epson.

The one feature I haven't tried yet is the ability to print directly onto a cd or dvd.  I really should get around to checking that out.

Richard and I are in the process of setting up the new TV he gave me for Christmas for my Momcave.  It's scanning for channels now.

Well, I guess today is the day she of the Evil Eye is coming, since she's here.  I went back to bed at seven and fell asleep about eight and was awakened by the doorbell at nine.  And there you have it.

OTOH, our HP printer works mostly fine all of the time.  It was our Lexmark that was the nightmare.

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm having a cup of coffee and a sandwich at the coffee shop next to the theatre. It's a two show day.

I must say the HP Pavilion desktop computer we have is probably the best all around computer we've ever had, though it's getting quite old and tends to be slow, especially when it's first turned on or woken up.

bk - HP printers have had a history of Mac comparability issues (since they've been "associated" with PCs for so long). If something else does happen down the line, the Apple support forums are filled with threads and solutions.

I was awakened at the unacceptable hour of 3:45 a.m. by DS Gabe, who made the mistake of flicking on lights that also go on upstairs by our bedroom as he came upstairs from playing video games.  Can you say, "No more screen time"?  I know I can.  And did.  ;)

*In a related issues, since FedEx/Kinko's, etc., and Staples office centers are PC-based - specifically HP-based, they are not the best places for Apple and Mac users to go should they need to use a "temporary office".

You know how Eskimos have all those words for snow?  Portland forecasters have a similar vocabulary for rain.  It's actually kind of amusing to read through the paper's forecast to see how many different ways they can say it's going to be wet.

I have a Canon printer.  When I was looking to buy a new printer, I made sure that I got one that would be Vista-compliant (my old computer has Windows 2000).  When I got my new computer the year after, I actually got XP (with a Vista-upgrade disc) and have not had any trouble with it.  The printer ink is expensive, but I really only print once in a while...usually color pictures for albums that I've burned to CD.  I used to get the ink from Amazon through a regular standing order (at quite the savings) but they eventually stopped offering the ink on standing order. :P

Actually, I don't print out my manuscripts any more.  Haven't for years.

If I need to print a script, I send the file over to the place where I get my mail, and he prints it out for me.  That way, I don't have to worry about ink and all that other stuff.

Sounds like a good plan. And a clean one, too. That is, given how many times I've blackened my hands with printer powder.

If you have a printer manufactured during the past two years, make sure you turn it off through its own power button and not by simply cutting off its power through a surge protector or power strip switch.  Many new printers go though necessary maintenance processes (cleaning jet heads, sealing off ink cartridges, etc) before shutting down, but only through their own Off switch.  I've unplugged mine from the surge protector and have it going right to a wall outlet now.  It does go into a sleep mode if I forget to shut it off.
