Took the car in this morning for a $45 oil change and filter change. The rest of the work needed will end up costing $450. Ugh.

Betsy took our older SUV in yesterday and I literally gave her a list of things they'd try to sell her which we didn't need.  :)  She went to Oil Can Henry's this time instead of Jiffy Lube, and said they were SO much better--no hard sell, you get to sit in your car while they do the change (and they bring you reading material).  Plus, they didn't try to sell her anything other than a rear differential clean, which indeed we probably do need (but which she didn't go for).
This was stuff that was actually needed and some of it was covered under the warranty, but with a $100 deductible. I paid off the car a couple of years ago, so I sort of feel these things are going to happen as it gets a little older. I just don't need the repair costs right now.

Thanks to all for the vibes for my dad.   He has returned from the specialist....they froze the difficult area that was causing the nosebleeds.....so we shall see if it works.

Glad to hear the show went well last night!

And re: the book it's quite amazing that you can remember so much without having things written down. It makes sense that you have to go back to add things. Most of us wouldn't remember a thing!

Jennifer:  The ending of the US in terms of Lisbeth seeing what she sees is exactly the same as the ending in the extended SWEDISH version - the extended SWEDISH version adds about thirty minutes of footage that wasn't in the SWEDISH version that played in theaters and that thirty minutes is all important.  For me, the CHANGES that the US makes to the ending in other ways, said changes NOT being from the book at all, are not good and completely unnecessary.  And Mr. Fincher and his screenwriter completely blow the emotional wallop of the end of the Vanger part of the story - in the Swedish version that scene is very touching.

The Director's Guild of America nominations are out.

Can't believe I've seen three of the five movies. And I'm not certain I agree with the choices of the movies I have seen.

I proofread "It's A Hit" in two hours and Joshie sent me home. I return on Wednesday.  I will now work on DEAREST ENEMY for awhile.

I got home to another surprise following DR JRand61's dream analysis on Friday (?); this weekend I had a long talk with Dr Shoemake, my best friend in grad school. So, in 1967, there was a theatre grad student, Steve Brown, who was a very good friend. The summer theatre of 1967, I shared a house with Steve, the late Dan Dietrich, and Charles Irvine (I think!). It was he who introduced me to the great Chad Mitchell Trio and tried that summer of 1967 to get me to read CATCH-22. It took me six more years to appreciate and love the novel.

So, I had an address and phone number for Steve and his wife when he was teaching high school in the Dayton OH school system but sometime around 10 years ago, the number was no longer a working number and I could not locate him. Today I had a friend request from him on Facebook. I'm still in shock and very happy.

I don't know if it was the "extended" version or not, but I watched the Swedish version on DVD and it ran 152 minutes.

I agree that Lisbeth's clandestine actions at the end of the films lead into the 2nd movie, but is there going to be a 2nd American movie?

Based on the box-office returns thus far, that is certainly in question.

Possible Spoilers Ahead:

What I would have done in this first film is have the Christopher Plummer character give Daniel Craig the files, then have a news report that the character who sued Craig (Sorry, I can't recall his name) was arrested.

That would have eliminated the need for Lisbeth stealing the guy's money in this film...and the picture could have ended with Lisbeth seeing Craig with the Robin Wright character, then tossing away his Christmas present.

IF there was a second movie, you could have opened it with Lisbeth stealing the guy's money and proceeded from there.

At least, that's the way I would have done it.

the guy's name was something like Vennerstrom.

I think there will be a second movie, if only because the American version did well this weekend and seems to have legs. Plus the international grosses are good, if not spectacular. But BK was right: Christmas was a big mistake for a movie this dark.

Hello from Northern Virginia, where it's snowing!!  It's actually sticking on the roofs now.  I can only imagine some of my former coworkers panicking and leaving work early.

I wish we had Oil Can Henry here.  I dread going to JiffyLube because they always try to make me sign up for other services.

Heigh-ho!

Back to work am I after one month off.

Very "different" Christmas this year.  A bit of "stress" at home, but a wonderful flight back (including an amazing, very effective neck-and-shoulder massage at an ExpresSpa in Atlanta's terminal A) on a 757 in 1st class...so much space that you could fully extend your legs and not touch the back of the seat in front of you.  THAT's luxury.

And the service was amazing.
