In other news, eBates daily double is the Apple Store, so I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought Zach an iPhone, which is evidently the best phone for him to have in China according to his teacher (there's evidently a Chinese-English app that everyone uses).

BK, we watched TINKER, TAILOR last night and enjoyed it very much, though I'd now like to see the mini-series with Guinness which I'm sure involves more detail.  You went to the BEAR PIT when the best BBQ jernt in LA is practically around the corner from the Mission Hills pp show -- Dr. Hogly-Wogly's Tyler, Texas BBQ.

DR JMK:  Have you any idea when or if "Bite the Bullet" will be reviewed at your site?  I have read your review of "Demetrius and the Gladiators" and fully understand the concerns you raised, especially in terms of "expectations."

Still, it's the best version I've seen and the sound is glorious.

The miniseries is due out on BD in just a couple of weeks from Acorn.

Re:  Tinker, Tailor.

It's incredibly hard to follow and after listening to the commentary, there are all sorts of incredibly picayune touches I had missed.  For instance in the credits sequence it shows Smiley having his eyes examined, which evidently was supposed to clue us into the fact that the present day sequences have one pair of glasses while the flashbacks have another pair.

In other news, furnace issue has supposedly been identified.  Some of these furnaces came with a condensate pail that cracked due to the oil they used to manufacture them, and mine is one of them.  That makes the condensate fall on the flame sensor, which turns off the heat.

There was an article online in a Seattle paper about a couple of twins who used to run the IGA store at 2123 California SW in West Seattle....they mentioned that one of their regular customers in the late 40's/early 50's was none other than Frances Farmer.

They must have stocked beer and cigarettes....

This brings to mind an hilarious anecdote that Jack Lemmon told years ago.  He and his wife were on a European tour with Walter Matthau and his wife.  Evidently the Matthaus argued quite a bit and they were involved in a knock down drag out one day when the quartet was visiting a famous war site.  Matthau turned to his wife and shouted, "Now see what you've done!  You've ruined my visit to Auschwitz!"  ;)

JMK - Do you recall whether Lemmon said that Matthau said that knowing the lunacy of how it came out?

I have to go eat in a little while, then hopefully UPS will not play the game of delivering late in the afternoon - it IS a game - this guy actually switches up his routes every single day, just so he has a little variety.  He used to always deliver to the mail place by twelve-thirty at the latest.  Sometimes he still does, sometimes it's four.

My sense at the time was that Matthau was deadly serious and had no clue how ridiculous it sounded, part of what made it so funny.

Here's something...I bought a pocket watch from Amazon and it just arrived a few minutes ago!  HERE is a link to the listing and here's a not-so-large picture:

It's quite nice looking, but a little darker than what the pictures make it out to be like.  Still, it was just under $40, with no shipping and no tax! :)

Monday afternoon greetings!  I've been up since 9am, but still in my robe and slippers because of a book - SARAH'S KEY.  The local campus library where I used to work is having a discussion of it Wednesday, so I started it on Saturday thinking, if I could finish it by then, I'd go.  Well, by this morning I was close enough to the end and engrossed enough that I just had to read until I was done.  Now I have a whole day - tomorrow - to think about and read some background.

Elmore, did you ever see the TV version of "King Lear" with Orson Welles? I didn't know such a thing existed until I was looking through a DVD booklet last night. Sounds wonderful. Or it could be awful, depending on budget and how much they cut for TV, etc.

Vixmom, re:  your post about ordaining gays, etc.  I had just been hired as Music Director by a large Episcopalian congregation here, with a wonderful liberal British Priest whom I adored, when the very next week Gene Robinson was ordained.  The next Sunday DURING SERVICES about 75% of the congregation stood up en masse and walked out, never to be seen again.  Unbelievable.

Did you gain new members as a result?
