OPERATING ON LITTLE SLEEP

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were operating not only on little sleep but on Mrs. Moss's Mole, and now it is time for you to post until the operating cows come home.

It has cooled off. Temps in the 70s but the humidity is high. I'll live with it.

Off to work.

Jean Hagan is amazing in Singin' in the Rain. Her "I ain't people ..." speech is one of the funniest things ever captured on film. No matter how many times I see that movie, she reduces me to tears of laughter in that one.

TOD:

In addition to Singin' in the Rain:

Gene Kelly:
The Pirate
On the Town
Les Girls

Donald O'Connor:
Call Me Madam
There's No Business Like Show Business

Debbie Reynolds:
The Pleasure of His Company
What's the Matter with Helen

TOD:

Well, I like about everything done by two of the performers mentioned and just about NOTHING done by the third performer EXCEPT Singin' In the Rain - and I don't like that performer much in it.

But I have been read the riot act here by some for expressing my opinion on that performer, so I will just make lists for the other two:

Donald O'Conner:  No Business Like Show Business, Anything Goes

Debbie Reynolds: This Happy Feeling, Tammy

FOLLIES article is wonderful.  I never tire of reading about this stuff.

Apologies to BK for an annoying copy-editing question.  But I want to understand this clearly anyway, so...

In this sentence, should the "a" be there, or did you mean to convey the negative, that with three-track tapes you had, in fact, almost NO control?

"But on three-track recordings everything was basically mixed and you had [a] little control over what was on each of those three tracks."

Dark here, nice break in the weather.  Just stepped outside to see what it feels like and I wouldn't be happy with this dampness in the house, so I'm keeping the a/c on.  Lightly.  Courteously.

Good morning, all! I slept terribly: I awoke at 1:30 with an anxiety attack about moving in the office next week. Around 2, I decided to get out of bed and see what was going onin my cpmputer life since I couldn't sleep. About an hour later, I went back to bed, couldn't sleep, so I read a bit. I turned off the lights around 4:10am. Now I am sleepy, irritable and discontent.

So, I am heading to Toyland, hoping that the DEAREST ENEMY corrections I've asked for are made so I can reprint one number. Then I will ponder the shape of the office and where all of the things in the McGlinnventory that should have been dumped over two years ago are going to occupy space. If this isn't accomplished ASAP, before the movers start dumpng things - shelving, cartons, furniture - into the office, there can no organization for acouple of months, since Curtis will be away amd I cannot do it alone.

I have much advice for all of you, after working for too many years with only a few competent folk and a lot of incompetent fools, but I am saving it for the memoirs.

Also, this morning, I've been asked to redo a DEAREST ENEMY rehearsal schedule I was asked to do in May. I passed it off on theconductor wh's never bothered to give any input on it since then.

I have to call a friend of mine in Ohio whose son died of a stroke this week.  That's later today.

I have to talk to the Man From Philadelphia. That wll happen whenever he calls.

Someone, just shoot me.

I'm less familiar with "Rain" than most people, so:

Gene Kelly - On the Town, An American in Paris
Donald O'Connor - Call Me Madam, Anything Goes
Debbie Reynolds - The Rat Race, The Pleasure of His Company

The pic was taken by ex-Giants linebacker Dhani Jones whose flight had just taken off from LaGuardia.

I had ordered Chapin's EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE as soon as it was available on Amazon.  I cracked it open the day I received it but I initially found it a dry read.  I put it down and didn't touch it for almost a year.  But the second time around, I was pepared for Chapin's objective observational style (which actually works very well) and I devoured the book.  It is a must-read for Sondheim fans.

It's Thursday.  The sunrise was spectacular this morning, and there was a rainbow in the western sky.  Not a bad way to start the day.

Vibes for DR ELMORE.

We got a bit of rain yesterday....a LOT of rain in places other than where I was.....perhaps some for us today.

Greetings from Toyland!

I am waiting on word about the DEAREST ENEMY fixes, I have a date with Skip Kennon tomorrow to help me with this office and I am hoping Peter Foley, who is younger than either Skip or I, will come and help us a bit as well.

I am hoping that my colleague Curtis tomorrow can untangle the numerous cables and wires so neither move cuts out our internet or hookups with computer and barely working, but very damaged, printer.

Oy!
