I think I mentioned my favorite Thanksgiving memories the other day. I was living in Florida, and Thanksgiving was always warm and sunny. No sign of the short winter to come. My friends Bill and Laurie would always host, inviting various friends in for the day.

Dinner was always the traditional feast, which Laurie would have to have and Bill seemed to enjoy making, for the most part. He would always set what the wine would be and we'd all bring a bottle so we could compare and enjoy. I think it was what really got me started on studying wine.

Nirmala, who is a strict vegetarian, would bring a host of fiery Southern Indian dishes that often eclipsed all of the traditional fare, and I dove right in.

We became a loose sort of family that continues to this day, thanks to email and Facebook.

And I am thankful for their love in the way that I am thankful for the family that we share here.

We watched Born to Dance last nice. It was a lot of fun but I enjoyed Broadway Melody of 1940 more.

We also have another EP movie to watch, Lady be Good, and an obscure Fred Astaire from 1940 called

Second Chorus

Never heard of it, let alone seen it. It will be a fun addition to our weekend.

I have lots of Thanksgiving memories from my childhood.  We would drive to see my grandparents who lived about 10 miles apart from each other near Des Moines.  On Thanksgiving morning I would wake up and watch the Thanksgiving Day parade and around noon we'd all go to Des Moines to my Aunt Priscilla and Uncle Jim's house.  It would be both sets of my grandparents, Uncle Jim's parents, my cousin Jim and Jane and my family (5 of us).  I remember playing pool in the basment, and just being there with all the relatives.

The most memorable was the year that my Aunt decided to buy a pre-cooked turkey from Barbara's Bake Shop.  Well, the cook forgot to go in and start the turkeys so when she went to pick it up it hadn't been cooked yet!   It was pretty funny for eveyone but Aunt P. We ate hours and hours after it had been planned, but we were all together so it was ok

It's not great, but it is fun. And Paulette Goddard is drop-dead gorgeous.

I have no special Thanksgiving memories.  All Thanksgivings during my childhood were fraught with stress (much like Christmas meals).  As a result, I've made every effort to excise stress from my holidays.

Last night, I watched the CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING / THE MAYFLOWER VOYAGERS on ABC.  I have always thought of it as rather second-hand Charlie Brown.  Actually I prefer the THE MAYFLOWER VOYAGERS.

It seemed strange to watch this on ABC.  I always associate Charlie Brown Specials with CBS.  It was  Tradition.  Charlie Brown Specials on CBS, Hallmark Hall of Fame on NBC, and mindless comedies on ABC.  That may not be correct, but that is how I remember things.

Next Wednesday, ABC will be showing A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS (per ABC) "complete" and "uncut."  Apparently that means that ABC has decided to restore the controversial nude cartoon scene betweeen Charlie Brown and Linus in the Roman Baths

Time to start gathering all the relishes and snacks I'm taking to dinner, like the Thanksgiving sardines (always the first dish to be eaten), the Thanksgiving cheeses and the Thanksgiving gardinara.

This is the same Thanksgiving story that I post every year, but I can't think of anything to top it.  This is how it appears in my memoir:

This is my Thanksgiving story, a tale that my family will never let me forget.

I love Thanksgiving. I have very warm childhood memories of that
holiday. Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home. My
aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his
family were always there.

We’d sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves,
people would tell jokes. My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller,
but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the
merriment…with disastrous results.

I think it was 1954. I would have been thirteen-years-old.
Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny
joke that I’d heard at school, and I told it very well.

Correction! I didn’t just tell it very well. I told it brilliantly. I had a
captive audience.

Then, I came to the punch line…which ended with the word “f**k”.

My mother, who’d had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing
hysterically. No matter what else you say about her, she was a wonderful
audience.

Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence. If
my mother hadn’t been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.
You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say “f**k”... particularly in front of adults.

The first one to speak was my father. Pointing at me, he started
shouting at my mother, “You’re the one who encourages him! This is all
your doing!”

Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused
themselves and left our house.

I don’t recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never
told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

Didja hear Matt Lauer introduce the Gershwin song as "Ess Wonderful"?

I wish I had read about Matt Lauer's blunder (Oh well, he is about to be canned anyway), because I was in the kitchen and not paying much attention, so I didn't hear it.  They may have edited it out before the Left Coast saw it.

T.O.D.

I have mostly wonderful, warm and fuzzy memories about Thanksgiving.  How can you not have wonderful memories about a holiday devoted to eating and football?  Funny, but the two memories that  stand out are both less than perfect days.

I am very full.  And happy.   The turkey cooked quicker than I thought it would but I had started everything else early so it worked out just fine.   I have LOTS of left overs and that makes me happy too.  I am sitting for a few minutes then will go and clean up the mess.

I was the youngest of all the relatives so when I was growing up, there really wasn't anyone to play with at family gatherings, so i went to the kitchen and offered to help.  As a result I learned how to cook all the family dishes and when I think of holidays I think of cooking and really do enjoy doing it.  Except when the family gets together and I'm the only one cooking.

For the halftime show of the first NFL game of the day, thye featured Detroit's Favorite Son, Kid Rock (CBS's word not mine).  He sang a song, that I guess was called "Detroit, Michigan" because that seemed to be the only words in the entire song.  Talk about playing to the crowd.

I'm up, I'm up.  I slept till ten-thirty, but it took a really long time to fall asleep and then I was up two or three times during the night.  But I'm being lazy and it looks like a nice day outside.

I have some friends getting together at 3:00.  I'm not sure I'm going to go.  They know I really just want to be alone today with the cats so they said it's ok if you don't come but you are invited if you get tired of being alone.   I have to say I'm thankful for friends and family who understand that I really do like to be alone and need time to decompress from time to time...but I still like to be invited just in case I get tired of solitude.
