The drive: Long.  The iPhone GPS thing I have kept trying to have me turn on streets I didn't care to, but I held my ground and took Van Nuys Blvd. all the way up, which was fascinating in its awfulness.  First off, as I passed Roscoe I could not believe how different everything was - that was mere moments from the apartment I lived in from 1971 to 1975.  As I drove north from there it continued to be so weird - I knew the area like the back of my hand - in 1971 it wasn't a great area, but it was still very middle class caucasian there.   The mall by Parthenia is not even a shadow of its former self - May Co. gone, all the other stores gone.  It's now some kind of huge ninety-nine cent store.  The whole area there looks sleazy, and the buildings are filled with graffiti and not American graffiti.  Then I passed the Panorama movie theater - we went there several times back in the day - nice single-screen theater.  Not any more.  A church now - what else is new?  From there it just got worse and worse.  Then I saw why the GPS tried to get me to ultimately take Woodman all the way - because Van Nuys curves around and suddenly the two streets cross each other - both are north/south streets but at a certain point Van Nuys becomes east/west - very weird.  I found the DMV and parked, waiting in line five minutes to get my appointment number - I am here to tell you I was the only white boy in the jernt.  My 1:40 appointment happened at 1:45, got a nice gal, explained the situation, took the vision test, passed with flying colors, and she entered that into the computer, got off that screen, then double-checked by going back and told me it's now showing as "in progress" to be done.  I will, of course, triple check by calling later today.   I was out in five minutes.  I took Woodman all the way to Moorpark, then ended up at Jerry's Deli for a Cobb salad and a bagel.  Home now until rehearsals start.

I TOOK WOODMAN ALL THE WAY is the name of my next novel.

Part of me wants to go out for Indian food tonight...and another part of me wants to crawl into bed as soon as I get home.

Why don't you just crawl into bed with the Indian food?

As far as DEATHTRAP goes, I saw it on Broadway with John Cullum.    I did not enjoy the play.  Stll, as an actor I would love to do the show, just as long as I don't have to watch it.  If I remember correctly, the two male leads don't actually kiss in the play, although they did in the movie.

Of course, if I had been in a film with Christopher Reeve, I would have insisted on a kissing scene.

Had a delightful second rehearsal - very high energy and fun.  A couple of people really need to buckle down, Winsocki and get their lyrics, but otherwise it's in very good shape.

Of course, my favorite thing in the show is Jenna Rosen doing Turkey Lurkey Time with a lot of snippets of the original Bennett choreography.

I was in a film with Christopher Reeve but his kissing scene was with Kathy Baker

The young woman who replaced me 4 years ago and 2 of our grantwriter friends helped our friend/colleague Andrea evaluate half of her students' presentations tonight at the University of Dayton.  We'll hear the other half next Thursday.

I love the first line in the play Deathtrap:

"Deathtrap. A thriller in two acts. One set, five characters. A juicy murder in Act One, unexpected developments in Act Two. Sound construction, good dialogue, laughs in the right places. Highly commercial."

Went on a tour of the new restaurants at the Pearl Brewery. It turned into more of a pub crawl, with more cocktails than food. But that ain't all bad.

Watched a TV version of "Miracle on 34th Street" that featured MacDonald Carey and Teresa Wright. Thomas Mitchell, an actor I generally like, was Santa, only he was a little too maniacal in the role. The script lost about a half-hour (the running time was about an hour), and it all felt like it was in shorthand.

The ending was the weirdest, though. The Susan Walker character is the one who has the thought of having the post office deliver the mail to Kris Kringle at the court, yet Carey's attorney takes credit for getting Santa off.

Well, at least it wasn't the David Hartman version.

It's funny (or not) - during the day I do feel more myself - it's at this time at night when whatever I'm fighting tries to fight back.  Damn them, damn them all to hell

Do the employees of "The Office" ever do any work?

Did the people on "Grey's Anatomy" ever do any actual medical work besides sit around and talk?

I have never seen any character on the soaps actually work; all they do is sit about andtalk about themselves for the benefit of  viewers who haven't tuned in for over a year.

I don't know about "The Office" or any of the soaps, but the doctors on "Grey's Anatomy" are frequently shown operating...successfully and not. ::)

Tonight's final dress rehearsal of "...Willows" went quite well.  I goobered just a couple of sound cues, but overall, it was a success.  The kids in the audience liked it (there were a few moments of restlessness) and it seems that most of the adults really enjoyed it, too.  We open tomorrow and then we have four, count 'em, FOUR weekends of performances.

I watched THE ARROW last night....and I think I saw John Barrowman on there playing something - but the scene went by pretty fast.

Barrowman is a recurring character...he's the MAJOR bad guy in the city.

Really?  I guess I have no idea who John Barrowman may be.

As for Roses in Gypsy, I've only seen the original movie (love it) and the Bette Midler remake (like it).  I was also in a local production about 20 or so years ago.  I was George, Uncle Jocko's assistant and one of the placard changers.  We had placards with the names of each scene and Alice and I changed them.  That was actually a lot of fun.  Our Rose was a woman named Karen and she was an old-school belter like Ethel.  That show was a lot of fun. ;D
