Did anyone go out this weekend and see LES MIZ?  I couldn't find it in any of the theaters in Tacoma.

And remember that when filming began Grant and Niven were playing each other's parts, and producer Goldwyn watched the rushes and decided they should start over and switch.   He was right.

Originally, the director was William Seiter and the Bishop's wife was played by Teresa Wright.  Goldwyn didn't like what he saw of Seiter's shooting and fired him.  Henry Koster came in, saw Seiter's rushes, and realized that Niven and Grant were cast in the wrong roles and switched them.  Loretta Young was hired to replace Wright whose pregnancy made it impossible for her to continue in the role.  A delightful film classic was the end result.

DR TCB - I can just ABOUT take a lot of CGI scenery - but CGI animals - NO.  But I won't say anymore, because I don't want a repeat of what happened when I expressed my opinion about Flaherty & Ahrens.

Was it anything like the time I said I liked Canada geese?

EXACTLY like that....

My curiosity got the better of me - and I ordered the Laurence Olivier box set that has several of his BBC versions of American Plays.

I thought I wanted to see COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA......starring Olivier and Joanne Woodward.....  I might have liked it if I had never seen Shirley Booth in the film version..... Booth and Burt Lancaster and even Terry Moore were all very good in that movie.  And of course Richard Jaeckel as Turk.  The Oliver version was much shortened.....Woodward was too pretty and still had a lovely figure....Olivier was just too old to play Doc.....  Carrie Fisher was nothing as Marie and they guy playing Turk had a great 80's look - notice I said GUY not ACTOR.  Too bad the play was set in the "late 1940's" as the credits said.

There was always radio music and WRONG songs playing under the action.....and some "Ma Perkins" intros.....just because a song was written in that era doesn't mean it works for the story of the play...

There are a few other productions in the set.  I remember turning off the CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF with Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner and Olivier as Big Daddy.....because he was not so hot in THAT role either.....

Back from the Daily Grill where I had eggs benedict and no potatoes.  First eggs benedict in three years, ever since I read how high the fat gram count of hollandaise sauce is - but I was in the mood and boy were they great.

Christmas in South Carolina, part 5:

The time has flown by.  We have played SkipBo every day this week!!  Since our shopping trip to Aiken on Tuesday, we've done very little of consequence.

Yesterday, my cousin Debra called and asked if she could take me to lunch at the Pool Hall in Edgefield, SC.  I said she could.

Actually, the pool hall is named "Billiards Parlor"...and until about 20 years ago, was a "men's only" establishment".  Old traditions die hard in the south.

The place was packed and we had two barstools at a bar table at the entrance to the parlor.  A most excellent and tasty hamburger and very crispy and wonderfully edible french fries were served to us.

Before we went to the pool hall, we stopped at a local cemetery to see the graves of two former "relations"...the ex-wife of my cousin Butch and the ex-wife of my cousin Rick.  Both ex-wives died over the past 14 months.

During lunch, I asked Debra where her first husband had been buried.  She and her first husband had a great relationship but they grew apart when Debra wanted to better her career opportunities and Tom wanted to make fast bucks doing things Debra did not approve of.  They divorced amicably.  Both remarried.  Tom died young in a motorcycle accident.  Debra married Tom's cousin Rob.  Rob asked Tom for his permission to date Debra a year after their divorce, so there was no bad blood in the family.  Thus I have three cousins all in their second marriages and all having deceased ex-spouses.  That's on my mother's side.

After lunch, Debra asked if I'd like to see Tom's grave which is near the grave of her deceased brother-in-law Boone who died earlier this fall of cancer.  We visited both graves, and I was mindful at the time that I got some satisfaction knowing where everyone was laid to rest.

Following that, we picked up my Aunt Doris and went to the house of a mutual friend to pick pecans off the ground.   My aunt and Debra filled two bags, and I filled one and part of another.  I guess we got about 15-20 pounds of pecans.   All for free.  My aunt knows a place that cracks the nuts so my mother and she will probably get that done after I leave on Thursday.

As you well know, tomorrow is December 24th...known in these parts as Christmas Eve.  My mom and I will attend the candlelight service at the church at 6 p.m. and then go to Debra's house for our annual Christmas Eve dinner.

Mary had a tramp stamp, one of the lambs cried, the other lamb wouldn't put on his ears, the angel had a speech impediment, the shepherds all had their backs to the audience, and one of the wise men danced Gangnam Style down the center aisle.

It went well.

I love it! Sounds wonderful.

The only thing I remember to top it was in our second grade Christmas pageant when the one kid with the loudest, most off-key voice (mine was always off-key but never too loud) vomited right after the processional.

Did my big shopping at Gelson's and I'm totally ready for Monday now.  I also delivered a box of caramels to Mystery and Imagination Books.

It must feel good to be all ready a day early.

I'm sure the book store appreciated your gift.

Castle Heights Elementary School did not do Christmas pageants.  I think there were 3 non-Jewish kids in my class.

When I visited my cousin's on the Isle of Man I went to my first school & only Christmas pageant.   It was very cute.

Hi, it's been quite the week.  I should be back to some resemblance of normal by noon on Christmas Day.  In the meantime, it's back out in the storm to get to the restaurant for some playing and singing.

Watched a very interesting film called Enduring Love by the director of Hyde Park on Hudson - again he can't stop with the relentless and, more importantly, completely lame shaky-cam - when he does then he's fine.  Once again, a great score by Jeremy Sams and a great performance by an actor I have never cared for, Daniel Craig.
