Jeanne, Baptist cakes are like donuts but cut in rectangular strips. When you fry them, you fully immerse them in the fat, hence the name. When they're done, you cut a slit in them, fill with butter and top with warm maple syrup.

Thanks for the explanation. Are they a Southern item?
I'm told they're from the northeast, but I haven't done my homework. My version was good for a first effort, but I'm going to work on them to get them better.

Of course when I came home, they were all docile and acted like nothing had happened, lol
Would you expect any different? After all, you were home. They got what they wanted.  :)

Lovely tree and even nicer to see you.

Finally caught up with the day. It's been a busy one. Went to friends and we enjoyed the day. We put on the movie "A Cat in Paris" and I fell asleep about 15 minutes into the movie and didn't wake up until it was over. Oh, well.

But we ate like crazy, including about seven or eight fine cheeses, steak, duck, beer cake, pecan pie and ice cream plus some fine wines and homemade eggnog.

I browned the beef on all sides in my Mom's cast iron fire pan and then put the whole pan in the oven at 300 for two hours and then let the roast sit  tented for about 15 minutes before carving -  it came out perfectly -  I was so happy!  Thank you internet cooking sites!!

TOD:

Last night, we ate b-b-q and watched Amahl and the Night Visitors and then the new HOBBIT movie, which seemed so like:  "Been there done that, too many times".  Nothing new in Hobbitland.  Then we open all our presents at midnight.  Today we had Christmas lunch with very dear old friends, exchange gifts, then came home, took a nap, then I watched OPEN RANGE, a very good western, and then the Bachrach/David concert at the White House.  Lovely quiet Christmas, just the way I like 'em.

Ben -  I bring Christmas crackers every year to Christmas Eve -- do you actually make all of yours or  did you mean that Anthony just made one for that little boy ?

Funny, but someone at dinner tonight was talking about how much he loved Open Range, too. It's been years since I've seen it. May have to watch it again in the near future.

And the word of the day is: GLISSADE!

And The Song Of The Day Is:  GLIDING

Wow, that is eerie.  Miss Evelyn Nesbit followed by GLIDING.
