And if all of that does nothing else, it at least brings us to

Yes, I did that a couple of years ago DR CHAS SMITH......I was doing some video to DVD conversion for the theatre, so while I had the equipment.....I did my own.  Of course I had to keep a few RETAIL videos that were copy protected.....but sent four storage bins of videos that I now own on DVD to the Amvets.......

I wish I'd thought of someplace worthy to send mine to, but I didn't quite get that far in my thinking back when I first took the plunge.

And commercial ones still unreleased on disc -- yes, my remainders include a few of those.  I think at my peak of tape accumulation, I had maybe 100 commercial VHS and the 200-plus off-the-air ones.  The commercial ones did get donated to local libraries for their annual sales.  The library sales in this area have been very good to me over the years, and I am good to them.

Yes, DR Jrand and DR ChasSmith, going through and paring down those VHS tapes is such a nice feeling.

I think that I have only one or two VHS tapes, at most, now. Everything else that I would have wanted to keep are now on DVD and I was happy to donate the old commercial VHS to charity...where they probably are still sitting, gathering dust...but better there than taking up room here.

I do have a DVD-VHS recorder, and should get cracking on converting the remaining personal tapes.

As for the commercial ones, whatever would one do without Bert I. Gordon's THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN and William Castle's THE NIGHT WALKER?  I ask you!

Good morning, all.

Woke at 5:30 a.m. following a dream about an approaching tornado, which took place somewhere in the Midwest.  What I was doing there, I have no idea.  But I found myself wide awake, with no excessive tiredness or Oys or anything else, laid there for a bit and got joined for a while by a cat or two, then finally decided at 6:20 that there was nothing to do but get up.

So here I am, drinking a Dunkin' Donuts K-cup of coffee, which is pricey but not bad at all.  No sir, not bad at all.

Approaching tornadoes are reoccurring dreams of mine.

Good morning, all! I had another round of weird dreams, but I realize my last dream about Lotte Lenya and the Kurt Weill Foundation may have been prompted by anemail from the Foundation yesterday that led to a discussion of the new Mordden book on Weill and Lenya. The dream was fun; something about my runnng into Lenya in Europe and running around with her. I remember nothing of an earlier dream now except for the fact that it had something to do with a car crash at Goldman Avenue and Florence street, about three blocks from where I grew up.

Another day today at Toyland: I'll finish my cpffee and head out. I have to deal with a McGlinn Estate inquiry from the Library of Congress. Oy!

I have never dreamt of Lotte Lenya.

My dreams seem to have fantastic supporting casts.

I've had some doozies.  In one, some years back, I was around some venue or other where Gorbachev was visiting, and seemed to be on casual speaking terms with him and the security staff.

There will still be maybe a dozen things I "have to" keep, but that's acceptable when you consider the original number was well over 200 tapes.  It's taken me a year and a half to get them down to this number.  The core of that material, the stuff I do love and go back to, has been replaced with proper DVDs, etc., and of course a little of it wasn't worth replacing at all.  At least I can say without hesitation that I'm much better now in knowing what to acquire.  I recently went through my hundreds of DVDs and BLUs and found the collection to be so tight that only two things came out.  When I know I'm that careful, I can live with the shelves and shelves and shelves of it.  In fact, I WANT to live with all those shelves of it.  They just have to be the RIGHT things, then all is justifiable.

DR ChasSmith, last year I started on a project to convert my "must-save" VHS tapes to DVD.  I actually completed a number of them, but as I began work on the 1983 Tony Awards I began to get discouraged because the video drops and distortions would cause the signal from my video tape player to my PC to cut-off the recording.  From what I've read I need to invest in a high-end VHS player and costlier video software for the PC.  Not sure I want to go that route.

I'm up, I'm up.  Have to call AT&T right now because my phone is behaving weirdly.  If I don't pick it up INSTANTLY (which I don't because I need to see who's calling) I'm suddenly, out of the blue, getting a fax tone, only I've never had a fax machine here (my printer has one but I've never even configured it for faxing and it's not hooked up to the phone line).  This just started happening yesterday morning and it's really irritating.

The original Chinatown ending is okay - not as nihilistic as what it was changed to, but I firmly believe Polanski was right to ask for the change, and I believe Towne has realized that over the years.

Just wrote four new pages, that's how I feel.  That was after finessing stuff from yesterday's writing.  AT&T will be here at some point today to figure out what's what.

From DR Cilla:
Quote
DR Jane, my bad not BN.  Just went back and found the email that said Keith wanted to borrow a book.  Guess I saw BN and just assumed it was another ad. Sorry

That's ok.   I'm relieved to know it went through correctly.

A woman in my book group had her email compromised and sent one of those, I stranded, letters begging for money.  That was followed my an email from another member with a similar opening so I deleted it without reading.  I got to the meeting yesterday and walking in someone mentioned how sad about Annette.  Oops! Annette had to drop out of the group & had not sent spam.  Since I'm the organizer of our group and, obviously, needed to write Annette back that would have been a big mistake.  Not lending me the book was no big deal :)

Also re why someone might not want to lend an ebook. I would think the main reason would be if you have not read/finished it (since it disappears from your device while the other person has it.)

True, however, from now on if I don't receive a response I'll check if the person received my request to borrow or lend.  I have an ok selection of books that can be lent while DR Cilla has a better one.  It was DR td who first introduced me to lending & borrowing by sending me a book to read.

I put 20 lbs back on last year.  Not by eating more, but just because I stopped walking every day.
I tried walking the mall after work because of the cold, but it's just not the same as being outside.

 :(

Might just have to get used to the cold, and WALK.

Buy some Cuddle Duds and layer your clothes.

A new study of more than 260,000 people has found a link between sweetened soft-drinks and depression -- and diet sodas may be making matters worse.

I just wish I had known how destructive soda would be on my bones.

DR Sam, what kind of place do you live in that doesn't have heat?  House, apartment, cottage, etc.?  None of the above?  You certainly don't need MUCH heat in Southern California, but you do need SOME, and I don't recall knowing of places that didn't have any.
